(Intelligence) So you're saying Oblivion is an amazing game?

True. But only to experience how horrible it really is.

May god have your helpless soul

Generic, tasteless art, combat that obviously hasn't been informed that would barely have been modern back in Tribunal, characters lacking identity, repetitive dungeons, repetitive [go kill] quests, repetitive dialogue subgame requiring no skill or conscious thought, rendering itself obsolete, poor but Patented (ooh!) AI that was outdone in fucking ULTIMA SEVEN - a game that was around since the crucifixion of christ (who btw played UVII and loved it), Patented (shiny!) terrain that is designed to not look copy-pasted, but realistic and vibrant but does the exact opposite, towns that exist just to exist instead of being perhaps being portrayed as communities that grew into towns (as seen also in Ultima, as well as the game Oblivion is supposed to sequel and exceed, for instance), level scaling which eliminates a vast portion of the motivation to explore and see the world (i.e. sandbox to explore but not really influence or affect in any matter save closing a magical door to some tiny plane of DEMONIC EVIL because it has fire and stuff), a general lack of freedom other than perhaps having option Obvious A and Obvious B to solve something, choice and consequence, despite this supposedly being an RPG, even level-scaled quest rewards which removes any reason to go past level 1, a spell system and chargen that is portion of the complexity and possibility of the one in Arena+DF+tons of old school classic games I'm not RP enough to have even played, stiff and mechanic animations, a modicum of dialogue because everything had to be (anywhere from poorly to uninspired to kinda 'meh'ishly) voice acted? Link the mod that changes these slight gripes that I have with what is otherwise probably a wonderful piece of Next-Gen Videogame Art.

BUT LOL m8 NEHRIM: Fuck off, nobody ever really plays it anyway, they just pretend to cause it'll grant them RP E-Peen.

Hmmm. Well, I'm gonna talk about the ones I use. I'm not gonna link them because lolgoogle.

Two mods (Francesco's and Quest Award Leveling) change the NPC and quest reward scaling (OOO does away with scaling, but I don't use it), one of them (Francesco's) being the one that also makes quests leveled so you have a reason to go beyond level 1. There are others that change the spell system (Supreme Magicka, Midas Magic - though Midas adds things instead of changing) and combat (Francesco's and Adrenaline Fueled Combat). There are a few mods that change animation, but I don't use them (Deadly Reflex is one, and it adds combat moves as well). The bigger quest mods have a good amount of dialogue. MMM adds monster variety and a few other tweaks, like faction interaction.

I'll look at the list for more, after I get back from work.

OOO works because Oblivion actually had a lot of hooks in terms of AI, systems for stealth and so on which were either dumbed down or mediocratised into worthlessness in the vanilla game. "Radiant AI" wasn't all hype. The code is doing very complex things (relative to other games) behind the scenes, hence the appalling performance.

Hence OOO modded oblivion is a fun dungeon crawler. The traps are lethal or can be used lethally against your enemies. Breaking open a chest you can't pick may get you that extra loot but the noise (not scripted, it's there in the base AI) can bring half the level running, other adventurers may get to chests and loot them before you and so on...

The NPCs are no longer levelled and if you also add a combat mod like deadly reflex it is great stuff... until you get back to town and have to face those bethsda npcs...

OP, you should listen to this refined gentleman, if you're still around. Just throw in the Deadly Reflex mod, install Shivering Isles and you're set. Modded Oblivion can be pretty fun for a while. Also, you could try the Nehrim mod (I suggest you also use Deadly Reflex 5 + compatibility patch with it). It's definitely better than Oblivion, but not as good as Shivering Isles. Yes, I've said it, African Americans, Shivering Isles was pretty fun. Not a good RPG by any stretch, but it was really enjoyable (heavily modded, of course) while it lasted.

I've tried to like this game a few times now. On my last attempt I shut it down after getting out of the sewer and haven't played it since. It is easily the most bland roleplaying game ever made. Any person with a modicum of intelligence sees right through the design flaws only an hour or so after playing.

Just wait for Skyrim if you need a TES fix. I'm sure it will be marginally better, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Shivering Isles was an absolute turd of a game, worse than the original. It featured even more bland copy-pasted identical dungeons and towns, with mind-numbingly boring quests requiring you to go into said dungeons and towns.

There was absolutely no reason to explore the isles as there was nothing unique or vaguely interesting to be found. Essentially everything about the game including the so-called wacky plot was just atrocious and embarassing.

The only reason so many people seem to think it was better than the original is because the overland world is a direct copy of the marsh area around Seyda Neen from Morrowind. This reminds them of a quite decent game, and they therefore assume that Shivering Isles is also such a game. They are of course horribly wrong.

I probably played for ~2-3 hours when it came out and another ~2-3 hours with some of the mods mentioned in this thread. Yhe mods do improve the game, but it's still not worth playing.

Just from skimming the oblivion lps here on the codex i am glad i didn't play any more than i did. The main quest is ridiculously crap, the wackee expansion is crap, and even the thieves guild sucks.

    lolwut.
    WAT.
    :retarded:

Whether it's a turd or not depends on how low you set the bar (it's a neobethesduh game, after all) but compared to vanilla oblivious it's fucking PS:T.

Except it's true. Oblivious flaws are just fucking glaring and clearly noticeable right from the start.

    Then again, Onlive.

You are right, having a modicum of intelligence is a compliment and a brag, derp!

    "Modicum: : a small portion : a limited quantity"

It looks like they are switching to a model closer to netflix atm. However, none of the titles they offer require a computer worth using the service for atm. Still, $10 a month to play a bunch of full games doesn't sound bad.

The list of games is actually impressive for $9.99 a month! http://www.onlive.com/playpack

More like, take away your access to the food. What you had already consumed is left intact.

I think it's entirely possible for Onlive to become a viable service for anyone wishing to scathe themselves with next-gen games.

Should you get it you might also give Nehrim a try, which is a total conversion for Oblivion.

So, of course it's still using the same engine and most of its models/textures, but they have a much better world/dungeon design and completely removed level scaling.

... are you insane?! Skyrim need fresh, silk of virgin thigh, birdlike light state of mind – without speck of soil by previous gen, deadly boring, not-hd, not-awesome, too much complicated, not enough bloomed and lensflared. So, sir, no – just – no!

Ps. Well... and three pages about Oblivion... again.
Ps2. Yes, modded Oblivion can by amazing thingy, especially for those, who heartily hatred vanilla flavour of game.

    Ps3.
And this is simply stunning! So we have, now and here, nice engine capable doing Thief'y things and all we get are fucking mudcrabs on the morning beach. Now, this is sad and really depressing. What are they (Bet. dev.) thinking?!

Oblivion isn't even a game. It's a free porn and dating sim maker/anime creator, if the mods on TESNexus are any indication.

Deadly Reflex does fix it, and there is even a patch to make it work with Nehrim. With Oblivion Crash Prevention System and DR, Nehrim is a decent enough game, though one I can only recommend BUYING if Oblivion is on a deep sale.
