A user on the Obsidian forums named UrbaNebula spotted a new Obsidian trademark yesterday, for something called The Outer Worlds. They've actually trademarked it for four different purposes - computer games, gaming-related online services, gaming-related literature and board/card games - which suggests that this is a large, AAA-caliber enterprise. In other words, we may have just learned the title for Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarksy's unannounced game, currently known only as Project Indiana. Take a look:

Congratulations on the scoop, UrbaNebula. It's worth noting that this trademark appears to be owned directly by Obsidian, and not by the "Dark Rock Industries Limited" shell company that owns the Pillars of Eternity trademark and intellectual property. Whether that means anything is yet to be seen.

Infinitron, I refer to your expertise on this. What's the best single-page source with all the info we have on the Cain / Boyarsky project so far?

The Outer Worlds.

Cain and Boyarsky show BioWare how to really make a space opera RPG.

Get ready folks. We're about to enter a new era of incline.

Middle market AA game? There were a few of those lately, maybe they started being economic sustainable? It is the 2k private division backing this, so theoretically is a low budget game for an AAA game but it has a bigger budget than PoE 2 so it is on the 10 million dollars and above range so it isn't indie.

Outer Worlds doesn't sound like the title of a game, it DOES sound like the title of a franchise, a Song of Ice and Fire if you will.

Sounds a lot like they did the smart thing and brought multiple dimensions/visiting multiple planets into their lore so that they can do whatever the fuck they like with level design then handwave it. Also sounds a lot less post apocalyptic.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Now I feel really stupid for offering to bribe Tim Cain for information this morning. TimCain is the genuine article, right? If not, I am both more and less embarrassed.

Probably another awful real time w/pause game.

Has Tim ever made a RTwP game? Has Leonard? I thought pretty much everything they've done is either turn based or ARPG. Would be weird for them to start now.

I was just making a lame Out of this World / Another World joke. :)

(Incidentally, in a vocab test when I was a kid I provided "apocalypse" as a synonym to "antipodes" because the latter had been defined as "the ends of the earth" on our memorization sheet. Good times.)

Hmmm Outer Worlds...sounds like obvious sci fi but didn't they have some idea about mythological based kinda netherworlds that existed around the corner/in the shadows of reality? One misstep around a corner in London and you're in the darkened alleyways of Whitechapel being stalked by a butcher, one fogbank rolls into Bergen and a beaching Drakkar dispenses mail clad raiders, the ergs shift the sun blinds and you're wandering out of the desert into ancient Memphis.

If this is a re-imagining of the sci fi genre of how Arcanum was of the steampunk, I think this game could be really good. Hopefully it is isometric with great world building!
