Like I said the last time we had a heated staff discussion about admin policies: Staff forum already.

"You edit it out. As I said, it's called moderation. It's what's worked in the past. Not every discussion is appropriate for tubgirl and in that case, you edit it out. Just like times when caveyboy was digging up threads and posting irrelevant crap on the end. We edited them or deleted them and warned him for posting "spam". But when it comes to a thread called "Hentai" and it's an 8 page discussion about tentacle rape, hey posting NSFW images seems appropriate."

I think those examples are a bit different, than what Kamaz did(or whoever the fuck it was).

That's my point though. We don't need a blanket ban. A blanket ban would mean those example threads are affected when it's clear what those threads are about with even just a bit of reading. What Kamaz did is a perfect example of a case by case basis where it's deemed inappropriate and it gets edited out. That's what I'm for. Case-by-case "is this NSFW image appropriate to this thread" if not, it gets edited out. If it is, it stays in. Once again, we don't need a blanket ban (with God forbid, a list of what images are and are not appropriate to embed just so everyone's clear).

The 'disable images' option is the way to go. Then everyone can have the Codex the way they want it.

would be great if there was a option to disable only moronic pictures.

Update: all admins thought that banning Kamaz was excessive. I've decided to respect their wishes, so Kamaz is free to roam the site once again. Also, it seems to me that most admins prefer a less forceful way to deal with NSFW pictures, so I've decided to stop my "unilateral" policy. My apologies to those whom I warned and threatened to ban.

Last, my advice to people who complained about the pictures and voted for the stronger policy - if you don't like it, make your voices heard in this thread. If you don't care enough to state a strong opinion, don't expect things to change much.

Well if according to Seven we shouldn't talk about food, sex or politics, what the hell can we talk about then, considering there are no RPG's to talk about? Endless threads about what we wish games in a dead genre would have? How fun.

According to me you're a dirty filthy pervert—but that’s just one man’s opinion.

I don’t see where I said no talk other than RPG talk, what I was suggesting was that off topic discussion—like hentai—used to be rare subjects, now they seem to be the rule.

BTW, like I said before, this is the RPG Codex not post any kind of useless shit that you can think up codex—there’s a place for that and it’s called Something Awful.

Heh, what do you suggest? Force-starting threads about serious subjects? Or maybe closing unrelated threads? I would think that these serious RPG-threads would get started if there was adequate demand for them. Considering the state of RPGs today, I can see why people would find it increasingly difficult, coming up with the motivation to keep discussing game mechanics.

Hey, I agree with you and your sentiment, so what do YOU suggest? I think we both recognize that there is a problem so why not try and come up with a solution instead of just saying, well things suck so let’s just see what else we can talk about...

Now you know damn well that's not what we're supposed to be about. Taking your admin status away would be daft considering the number of news tems and other contributions you make to the site. All I'm saying is everything needs to be done in moderation. Willy-nilly banning people because "You said so" isn't the way the Codex works or has EVER worked. That's exactly the sort of stuff Rex did when he banned Role-Player because he thought he was posting crap.

I just noticed this and I agree. When Rex was around there was always a bit of tension and knowing that you had to cow-tow to him otherwise he'd be a spiteful bitch. That said, I don't think VD did what he did out of spite, I think it was out of frustration—I can’t say that I agree with him, but I do understand, and I am happy that he nuked the images before my virgin eyes were sullied yet again.

Quite a few actually. Mostly overwhelmed by Oblivion at the moment (IE: Buried in the Oblivion threads). I've been around various forums long enough to know things work in phases. You'll have the out of control tubgirl phase, then you have the "Serioz Discussionz" phase, then you have an Oblivion phase... and so on. The other thing to keep in mind is that we've discussed game mechanics to death on this forum. Most of the "regulars" have been around to participate in 5 or more such conversations. Starting new threads about it all again isn't exactly high on anyone's personal agenda. Again, it's just a phase the forum goes through.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying here, you can only debate something so many times before you just get worn down. After a while it’s frustrating to have the same argument over and over again.

That's why we created Retardo Land. I think Retardo Land is still the perfect place for "inappropriate" or just plain dumb threads to end up once they've run their course. I'm certainly not advocating tubgirl being allowed everywhere and every post getting chock full of NSFW images (or any other images for that matter). All I'm arguing is that it's handled on a case by case basis. Not with a blanket ban.

You know what, Retardoland is fine, but at a certain point when is too much enough? To be honest, I do get an occasional laugh out some of the dumbshit, but when it’s there all the time it gets tired fast. Fine, I’ll concede that banning might be a little heavy handed, but something has to be done—from what I can see there are tons of carrots around here but not one stick.

Really, I would prefer it if people kept their stupid racist shit and their scat porn to a minimum, and kept it out of RPG threads (I neither read nor respond to most Codex non-RPG discussions for a reason).

But apparently, some of our current posters need to return to Kindy-garden (well, pretend kindy-garden, the way it used to be), where they can learn that taking your pants off and throwing sand at the other children is neither funny nor shocking, it'll just get you a spanking and some good old fashioned solitary confinement.

I'm all for the spankings, but if we're going to be all wussy and against cyber corporal punishment... perhaps we are in need of a Dumberfuck designation, with Dumberfuck posters not being allowed to post pictures?

I can't say I'm too bothered by the NSFW pictures, and they don't really happen so very often so that they need serious moderation. Or do they? They only seem to happen because of threads like "stop the nsfw pics" and the occasional moron. (Heck, even I've been tubgirled! That's why stayed.) NSFW pics happen for a reason, me thinks, and not very often.

But I still vote for serious moderation, because I truly feel for those who find staring into a gaping a(by)ss a scary experience. It stares back at you!

Some people say that I’m a bad guy
They may be right, they may be right
But it’s not as if I don’t try
I just fuck up, try as I might

But I can change, I can change
I can learn to keep my promises I swear it
I’ll open up my heart, and I will share it
Any minute now I will be born again
Yes, I can change, I can change
I know that I’ve been a dirty little bastard
I like to kill, I like to mate, I like to sing
But it’s okay cuz I can change

See it not my fault that I’m so evil
It’s society, society
You see my parents were sometimes abusive
And it made, a prick of me

But I can change I can change
I can learn to keep my promises I know it
I’ll open up my heart, and I will show it
Any minute now I will be born again

Satan: But what if you never change
What if you remain a sandy little butthole

<s>Suddam</s>kingcomrade: Hey Satan
Don’t be such a twit Mother Theresa won’t have shit on me
Just watch, just watch me change
Here I go I’m changing

Yup.

Just to make it clear, we WILL be editing out tubgirl and various other "NSFW" images but it will only be at moderator's discretion (IE: In threads where it really isn't warranted, which will be most of the time as per our past experiences). If it gets out of hand, we will ban people as we have done to people in the past who "go out of control" (even with non-image posting) but we're not blanking banning things just to keep some people at work safe from being fired.

We will however be implementing the option for users to disable embedded images in posts. It WON'T be enabled by default (and therefore won't work unless you're logged in). This will allow any users who DON'T want to see embedded images to simply click a link and turn them off. All images will still be in the thread but they will be left as links for you to click on if you want, rather than in your face images.

There aren't enough choices and consequences(tm) in the poll...

Personally, like VD and the others, I really can't fathom why anyone should even want to post and/or see these pics. It's not about freedom of speech either. The founding fathers (for those of you who are American) invented the first amendment not so that everyone could be a dumbfuck, but as a means of protecting people who were engaged in serious, high stakes political discussion that others did not like. It was intended to protect dissenters, not idiots.

I can see though that while the majority of the people who responded to the poll so far go with the strictest option, it's not a clear majority over options 2 and 3. In light of that, let me suggest a common sense system of rules that have already been suggested, as a compromise:

(1) NSFW pics only allowed in the general forums. Anywhere else, instant ban, whether linking or embedding. No one should have to look out for NSFW pics on say a thread dedicated to Arcanum. Anyone who is banned can e-mail the admins if he wants to dispute his case.
(2) General Forum: everything is fair game-- linking and embedding. For those who are operating from work, use DU's system that puts all images in URL links, except hopefully avatars, although that's not completely necessary. Anyone who practically spams NSFW embedded images however should be dumbfucked and have his image privileges revoked.

Note: I don't think NSFW really needs to be strictly defined. Anyone who posts an NSFW pic knows it's NSFW. There's no way you can't tell, it's just human intuition. It's like what the guy said about porn, you know it when you see it. Hell, the acronym is its own definition, if it's not safe for work, don't post it outside of the general forums.

As far as NSFW stuff goes, I actually thought the Beth's mounted combat video thread in GRPGD was pretty funny. Is that not alright?
I think we both recognize that there is a problem so why not try and come up with a solution instead of just saying, well things suck so let’s just see what else we can talk about...
I honestly can't think of a solution to make more people post serious topics about game design or mechanics, I'm certainly not one to start such threads. Yes there's a lot of Oblivion posts, and even though I don't post that actively about the game myself, there must be some serious demand for these threads, considering how quick they fill up with posts.

Although, to be fair, I do reckon the rules regarding spam could do with some up-toughened enforcement. I like the free uncensored Codex way, but sometimes a thread grows to 10+ pages, simply because a few people post silly shit after each other very rapidly. It might discourage some from posting, because the discussion may seem to be derailed into silliness.

No one should have to look out for NSFW pics on say a thread dedicated to Arcanum.
Have people done this? I mean, has there been a serious discussion, where a more or less regular member has chimed in, just to post a NSFW image? I agree that, since it's unrelated spamming, of unsafe images no less, it warrants at least a temporary warning ban, but I have to admit I've never seen it happen.

Here's the thing though. It's not about NOT posting shock images. We can still post them and still trick people into deceptively clicking on them. As stupid as you think that may be. The issue here was whether anyone could post it openly, as an embedded image and therefore get some poor sod who was at work fired.

Now, it's not happening. It's not a problem on these forums. Sure, a while ago some people went on a rampage but we crack down on anyone who goes on a rampage regardless of whether it's posting shock images or posting stupid stuff in general. Yet you don't see us implementing any "don't post stupid stuff" laws, do you?

As I've said, the Codex can handle this shit the same way it always has. We don't need blanket rules created everytime some people decide to be stupid. Threads that degenerate into silly shit (the only kind of threads where posting tubgirl openly is likely to be accepted) get sent to Retardo Land sooner or later.

Who has been arguing for draconian insta-bans or lists of approved materials? You're just setting up bogeymen to scare people.

The harshest option in the poll reads "Edit, warn, and possibly ban." People don't want to see TES:Forum censorship here, they just don't want to be exposed to these disgusting images when they're innoculously reading through a thread.

You're really talking about extenuating circumstances, which I think just about everyone here would be happy for the mods to consider. Still, it's clear that most users [who care enough to vote] want controls on the use of disturbing embedded images.

... etc

I didn't see your post when I first wrote mine. If you guys will indeed edit out tubgirl and other stupid images out of threads where they're not warranted, then I think that's a good start. This is my key concern, because as I said before I don't really care if a thread about "kc loves black cock!!!11" has NSFW images. Viewing these kinds of threads are obviously just asking for it. I'm still not sure about the warn, edit, possibly ban thing though. Seems kind of vague. My earlier suggestion of banning someone on the first attempt is probably a bit harsh, but I think more than a little wrist slap is in order. Edit on the first time for sure. Warn the poster, for sure. But something more active seems necessary-- like revoking image embedding for a few days for example. Everything else can stay the same, he can post, he can link, etc. If he tries to keep linking to the things he was going to embed anyway, it should be labeled not only as NSFW but spam, and should be treated in the way you described, eg possibly with a ban, at the moderators' discretion.
