Paradox just announced Stellaris, a sci-fi grand strategy game, during their Gamescom conference.

Here are the bullet points:

RICH INTERGALACTIC EXPLORATION
Something’s out there – and nobody knows what it is yet. Enormous, procedurally generated star systems ensure that every game will begin with a trip into the vast unknown, and the discovery of new worlds

ICONIC PARADOX DIPLOMACY AND STORYTELLING
Explore the stars as one of several playable races with unique traits and skills. Meet an incredible number of random species – all potential allies or emerging threats

DEEP AND DYNAMIC WARFARE SYSTEM
Defend your star-spanning empire with customized, user-designed ships, and repel attacks (or conquer lesser species) in rich, challenging battles with gorgeous, top-of-the-line visuals

The announcement came with a trailer:

As usual with Paradox, the game will be worth playing after years of patches and DLC, so probably around when they announce its sequel.

Maybe Paradox will use its Randomized New World technology to render truly bizarre star systems.

I think you're being too optimistic, this sounds more like that Runevapor game, a completely pie-in-the-sky announcement that will be cancelled with some vague mock-up screenshots after a year or two.

Damn, the second half of that video have a music theme that is easily recognisable, but I can't place it. Just a slight alteration from something in movie
But I can't remember from where.

Someone plz help?

Okay, 15 minutes it took me to figure it out. That is a sampling of Helmet dudes Tron 2 theme.

I believe this will end as an intergalactic confrontation of space-feudal lords, space-republics, some space-soviets and even more space-feudal lords. Plus space-industrial revolution with problems with inheritance of space-fiefs. And also with space-politics, with space-communists and space-liberals.

Maybe even with simple battles.

Reads, looks and sounds generic as hell.
All the aliums will probably have the same thought process as everyone, same ship/building classes and can be converted/assimilated, to boot.

Naw man, some aliens will be all evul and shit, while others will be peaceful hippies. And it'll be completely random too, so a race of tentacle rape eldritch horrors might be all about pacifism and peaceful coexistence. such fun!

I bet it will crash after 10 minutes just like every other Paradox game.

Yes I am aware Paradox is a publisher, not a developer. They are still responsible for game quality, though... and all their games have this 'crash' feature.

Paradox Development Studio exists and is a developer. They're the team behind all of the /gsg/ games. They're just owned by a publisher.

This game better have Vic2 style pops so I can micromanage my genocide and control over the lesser races to the exact percentile.

I also really want them to reconsider random world generation. Like, really want them to reconsider it. Random worldgen is the achilles heel of space 4x games and is why I don't play very many of them anymore except for Distant Worlds and prime-Sword Of The Stars. Usually a bland and soulless randomly generated world is saved by the pre-defined races being somewhat interesting, but in this game those are going to be randomly generated as well so I'm just not optimistic about this game being very interesting or creatively stimulating.
