My experience with idols is the maximum payoff is just way too hard to achieve compared to atlas. So while the dream setups are nice, the reality is most people will never achieve them, or spend a lot of their playtime before them, so it's easy to see why it was a rejected idea.

I wish they'd found a better way to balance it than the space limitation. Like the maximum payoff being rarer/more valuable idols rather than space limitation being the main way to hold it in check.

The transparency of which bonuses stack and which don't is absolutely godawful too. It's extremely arcane, and some bonus hardcaps aren't communicated at all unless you datamine.
