I could never really get behind the concept that a baron and his small council are all traipsing around doing mid-level D&D adventures.

In the case of NWN2, raising up/stewarding Crossroad Keep and the ongoing adventures of late game were both just part of your job as one of the Neverwinter Nine, and your party didn't also happen to be the entire government of a region.
