Finally finished the download.

Started my Veteran Trial of Iron Run.
PC is a Kind Wayfarer Paladin / Beckoner Chanter
Picked up Eder (Fighter/Rogue) and Xoti (Priest). Will grab Aloth (Wizard) for the fourth slot.
Not sure who will get the last spot, yet.

I keep mashing F5 out of habit, and the game keeps saying, "Nope, fuck you asshole. Better commit or quit."

Make the Codex Great Again! Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. I helped put crap in Monomyth
:negative:
The fuck! They even managed to screw the decisions from the first game,i had the restard the game because i didn't know that the decision making is hidden in the options. Also some options are missing, like you know, the end of the white march. It is missing the option to make the god but with tempered memories. How in the fuck you mess up this shit?! LoL

and if you import your save it doesn't carry over if the orlan baby is alive and what eder did

I've been periodically peeping streams of PoE2 a few minutes at a time to get a feel for what it's like, and nearly every time it's a voiced dialog part, the voice over sounds like a kwan hillbilly or redneck. Was that common in PoE1 as well?

Hiding the legacy creator under options menu and not adding "small stuff" into it cos it'd too weird...decline!

I'm not even sure my "created legacy" worked, I didn't get galawain's boon or whatever that Cohh dude got(hylea's boon), at least the orlan baby appeared :/

So far I can only make comparison Storm of Zehir > NWN2 OC for this. Even all the new mechanics and map are similar. Zehir-light where your character begins with a single ability or two.

Also the dialogue seems closer to BG dialogue, either because I've yet to encounter all the kiki taki or because a lot of stuff is hidden and descriptions are heavily toned down.

The spells as 1 ability per level is a disaster though. My druid after leveling up instead of picking a spell picked pet passive. Meaning duals look like they are skinnier in spells and abilities. Especially since spells did not change much - like, druid spells on level 1 are still mostly nukes, while heal was changed to a +5 CON buff. It's like they made spells blander on purpose and rejected any change to overall magic style.

Guess players would have to level up at least 1 char with extremely high Arcana or even 2 characters and use scrolls.

The new skills are welcome I guess.

I picked ending where I grab boons from all gods and then show them a finger by spreading souls randomly cause lol tzeentch lol cegorach lol wael, the goddess reprimanded me slightly saying "oh u" and seems like no change otherwise. Which is ok since it wouldn't be possible to make anything meaningful out of so many choices, I'm fine with it's just being cosmetic. If anything I'd rather forget previous plot and, honestly, I actually didn't remember 50% of options during story pregen anyway. Who wat how whatever I don't remember most of these people.

Accidentally reinstalled the Beta instead of the actual game. Fucking Christ.

Me too.

Prologue is inefficient, it's telling me PoE1's story like 3 times. Will get annoying on repeat playthroughs. There are also some quotes from PoE1 which I'm not certain what the significance of is. All the voice-over is tedious. The maps are pretty, though, gives me Storm of Zehir vibes in a good way. I'm one-shotting and overpenetrating almost all the mobs, spells still have Penetration and you have no way of influencing that, making it very fun when Barbs of Condemnation fail because of that. I'm not certain if the debuff effects are applied either way, I should've tested that in the beta, but oh well. Hard/Veteran difficulty.

Gosh the day after edit but nothing above is changing just that this is my reminder it is okay to sit down now and then and have a glass of wine but it is not okay to keep doing this to myself, my body, and my family. It is a lot of fun getting lost in a game world and sharing that experience with other people also playing and just learn more about the game but the excess support of wine is not. I am sorry for getting in the way of the discussion and not being able to have one at the time, a proper discussion about Deadfire. My own thoughts of my journey will come at a later time once I have taken time to look back and reflect. [May 9, 2018 . 9:56am]

Thanks,
Sherry

Steam delivering uncomfortable truths already, or devious seditionist who knows a bit of grognard lingo? YOU decide!

Start the game, begin campaign. Completely inappropriate narrator explains to me all the worst parts of the previous game. 3 years of ruminating over all the things I didn't like about the first one flood back into me in one moment. I remember the reviews describe the things in the first game that were already bad (such as the narrative) are even worse in this game. And I know other things that were bad (like companions) will be even worse since they don't even have Avellone contributing to them anymore. [Editor's note: ] I'm still listening to the narrator, wondering why it bothers me so much.

Then it hits me.

This game is trying to be SERIOUS. It's a fantasy game about dragons and wizards and litearlly a giant ♥♥♥♥ing god stomping around crushing people with his massive statue feet and it's trying to be solemn and serious and realistic. Images of playing the game flash before my mind. More obnoxious worldbuilding, with sentences filled with irrelevant proper nouns for people and places I don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about and that have nothing to do with the story. More idiotic preschool-level philosophy for morons about the nature of the gods (another area, incidentally, where Avellone's input is sorely missed: Guy isn't the next Hume or Kierkegaard or whoever but he knows how to tell these simple pop-philosophy stories well, unlike the current rabble of idiots writing for Obsidian, who apparently don't even realize that you can't prove a negative, e.g. that there are no gods). More terrible, badly-overwritten "quirky" companions so obviously insane that you wouldn't willingly get within 30 feet of one without your weapon drawn never mind keep them around in your party (or so uninteeresting and forgettable you'd rather recruit a merc so you can at least decide their stats), the only saving grace of which is the double-edged sword that there are hardly any of them to begin with; a double-edged sword in that if there were 20+ of them then most of them being ♥♥♥♥ wouldn't be the problem it becomes when you don't even have half of that.

But I was like, ah whatever. I can still just play through the game as a paladin, recruiting only mercenaries, and - and then it hit me, again. The game doesn't even have paladins. It doesn't even have ♥♥♥♥ing gods, we learn at the end of the first one. It just has ♥♥♥♥♥♥, dispassionate warrior-philosophers (*named* paladins so they can say they have them even though any moron recognizes that these aren't paladins at all) who feel so shoehorned in I'm confident saying that they are only there in order to tick the box of "classes nerds expect to be able to play as because they're in every other game".

Then I remembered no vancian casting and other stupid decisions they've proudly made in order to turn the game more into an MMO (why?) and make all the magic (the part that should feel most exciting and powerful) feel like boring, underpowered crap.

"Why am I playing this game", I asked myself, when 15 minutes in I was already sick of it?

And I realized I already didn't want to anymore.

Who thought it would be a good idea to remove ability cost from the detailed descriptions?

Why is this reviewer so upset about paladins? Pallies, at their core, are just "martial dudes with a code of conduct, their higher purpose in life is to deliver retribution far and wide" [with gods being a common source or idol], because D&D also has regular Clerics to fulfill that niche. D&D had Charisma be relevant for paladin powers because a Paladin is basically a beacon of shining light. He can do shit because he is an indomitable, immovable object of faith. Clerics were more about Wisdom because they had to interpret more direct signs from their gods and carefully form pleas. Here you have a paladin with no pantheon [which isn't new, given how, for instance, Warcraft paladins work] and this guy considers it worthy of a scathing paragraph, kind of making me question his credibility. Did he also uninstall Fallout 1 because the BoS members refused to teach him Lay on Hands?

And that part about Vancian casting? It's not even the best magic system in existence. Why is "lack of Vancian casting" synonymous with MMos? Did Final Fantasy MMoify itself when they got rid of spellslots after FF1?

That all sounds like Mr. Buzzword's attempt at harvesting brofists. EDIT: Especially the paragraph about how the game takes itself "seriously" when it is about dragons and wizards, which is just weird because the author praises Avellone in the same sentence, who took a setting about space wizards and their laser swords and took it for a more "serious" spin. And wrote for a game with a Dungeons & Dragons setting, with, again, wizahrds and dragons as the backdrop, and, again, tried to be more "serious". He wrote multiple games in that setting, in fact. But then, the companions are quirky and sound insane but the game is still trying to be serious. I read this twice and I have no fucking idea what the author's problems actually are. Especially since he somehow managed to access all of these woes within 15 minutes of the game. My last "first 15 minutes" in an RPG, I was punching rats in a cave.

I'm also wondering what mental deficiency makes someone who hated everything about a first game, and then everything they heard about the second game, play the second game. You'd think this disability would be so debilitating they would not even be able to communicate in a cognizable language, let alone type out their twisted thoughts to convey them to other sentients, but apparently not.

Well, the mmo comparison isn't entirely off. Just looking through the class abilities and I've caught a few named/designed after abilities in WoW.

It doesn't compare well to an MMO. Just because vancian casting has been replaced with per-encounter and some name overlapping occurs does not validate that comparison.

That whole post just screams typical steam user looking to throw around some salt.

That's a bit of a loaded statement. WoW certainly didn't invent generic spells like Lightning Bolts, Fireballs and Frost Bolts, which it has plenty. Neither did it steal D&D's thunder much by giving Paladins an ability named Lay on Hands. Unless one of the spells is named Sylvanas' Anal Beads, I'd see this as a coincidence. Like, giving Mages an ability called Fireball simply doesn't mean "A-ha! WoW was inspired by D&D and therefore was intended from the start to be a turn-based game!" I'm not really sure why the opposite would be the case, either.

I can state one thing already this early. The opening is weak. They should have gone with a new main character and just allow import of the world state, with plot continuity through a returning companion or two.

As it is, it’s just ponderous exposition and a really contrived hook to get you to the setting, followed by fucking brutal railroading. DM glue at its finest.

On the upside I’m not hating the changes to the mechanics as much as I thought I would be. And it’s very pretty indeed.
