Greetings, Watchers!

We’ve been hard at work delving deep into the code grimoire and tuning the balance of blade and spell—and today, we’re excited to share the results of that effort with a brand new patch. This update addresses a wide range of fixes and improvements across visuals, combat, quests, and more. Whether you're journeying through the Eastern Reach for the first time or returning to tie up loose threads, your path should now be a little smoother.

But that’s not all—we have something special on the horizon.

Coming later this year, Watchers will be able to help us test a brand-new feature: Turn-Based Combat. We’re excited to explore this new way to experience encounters in Pillars of Eternity, and your feedback will help shape its future. More details on how to participate will be shared in the near future, so keep an eye on our socials and in our discord.

For now, read on for the full list of changes in this update—and as always, thank you for walking the path with us.

—The Pillars of Eternity Team

I wish they focused on Deadfire instead of this mediocrity. Still, props to them for updating the game for free even though it's no longer relevant.

is this another all or nothing turn based mode? at least with Pathfinder, you could switch to TB during a boss fight. I cannot imagine having sit through all the trash fights in TB. its like watching paint dry

Yep. They will have to fix the amount of trash encounters if playing on TB for sure - or give the option to change between modes.

Can't be bothered to read the details tbh, but I did try the tb mode in Deadifre and it was sloppy af and not worth it. Can't see it salvaging first POE in any way.

I love how they think TB will fix it. No Josh, it wasn't unfun because of that. Possibly adding it now will make the game even more tiresome and slow. Since the very concept of Endurance is opposite to TB.

They will do neither.

I've started a playthrough of PoE 2 after turn-based-combat was introduced. I abandoned the game after 20 hours for different reasons but tbh the combat felt surprisingly decent.

But in my memory PoE 1 suffers from an annoying amount of meaningless combat encounters. They already slow the entire game down in RTWP.

I will try it again with TB so maybe it will fix it for me. What I hated the most about combat in original was that everyone actions were out of synch and had different action times and pathfinding was terrible on top.
I spent more time in pause or slow time than real time trying to manage it all and it was still irritating. TB can only make it more smooth and faster instead of slower.

That's... how RTwP is supposed to be played.

PoE's implementation was subpar because instead of a proper TB based ruleset it used Josh's feeble mind's concoction coupled with ridiculous vfx that destroyed any visual clarity, not because you fucking had to pause.

Not Bg1 and Bg2, neither played that way.
Pathfinder 1 was also similar to PoE1 but a bit better so I suffered less when playing it. But as soon TB was made for Pathfinder games I never played them in RTwP again

Back when I registered in this forum everyone seemed to love turn-based RPGs, it was all you would talk about (that and Oblivion, since it was still pretty new).
Now you all complain because we are getting a new turn-based RPG. What's going on? What happened? Are times really that different now?

No need to be so mystical and esoteric about it. Sure TB is better than RTwP. But Pillars has bigger problems. Also Oblivion is not RTwP, its RT

The ruleset is shitty, world is bland, writing isnt good, no encounter design, it was all debated to death here.

Also adding turn-based RETROACTIVELY to something clearly designed for faster gameplay (Josh's own words on why he included Endurance mechanic) is not magically gonna fix everything wrong with the game. Might even make it even more of a slog. Just shows how clueless their designers are
