Had to cheese my way through the Readric fight, which I never like to do. Party was too weak to walk up to the guy, have the convo and then win the fight. Lever 3 or something. Didn't have a ranger so using an animal companion to lure them also didn't work. Plus it felt too cheesy to make an adventurer solely for the purpose. In the end I simply went to the lower floor on the right of the platform and opened fire with spells, archers and arquebus. Easy win.

Wonder if the 'right' way to do this one is to have a stronger party.

Having a party of 5 or 6 guys at level 4 is sufficient for that fight on max difficulty. Certainly winnable at level 3 if you plan carefully. If you do all the stuff around Gilded Vale, the temple and maybe Caed Nua, you should be good to handle it just fine.

Or you could always side with the lord guy and go stomp the ranger fellow.

Well, seems like I might have just needed a slightly stronger party to survive that fight and have the actual conversation. Five guys at level 3. Trouble was that in order to start the conversation I had to send one of them up the platform. Which lead to that character quickly going down when it kicked off. When not trying to get the conversation the entire battle is a breeze. I hardly ever like to cheese through fights, though I fondly recall tossing down noxious cloud (or whatever the poison gas attack was called) all over the area in a troll encounter in the stronghold in BG2.

Stomp the ranger? Readric is a cunt. Already got one crazed zealot in my party and that's quite enough. Nice design on the quests, characters and dungeon btw. Loved the whole hold.

My take on Raedric, having seemingly done everything except seeing the ending slide:

Being a conservative sort, who tends to take the side of kings, lords and princes against the peasant folk, I decided to take the peaceful route and sneaked through the hold without confrontation (though I did release the guy in the prison). I thought I'd help Raedric out until I discovered he murdered his wife and child. I have a soft spot for nobility but that just can't be tolerated, so I killed him. I didn't care about his brother, but as long as the hold had a sensible ruler who wasn't going to hand over power to the peasants, that was fine by me.

Later, I arrive at the inn in Twin Elms and get told that Raedric has returned from the dead and reclaimed the hold. Weird. I was sure it was just some batshit insane cult led by a guy claiming to be him, and set off back to the hold, hoping to resolve it without violence. But no, I had to fight the undead Raedric and it was the toughest fight in the game by far. I guess this was reactive depending on how I did the first part - Raedric didn't take too kindly to me killing him. Anyway, I've killed him now. The whole thing seems like a bit of a waste of time. Sure, Raedric has stopped killing his own people but they have no liege lord to look out for them at all. I'm sure this will be addressed in the ending slide.

What I did appreciate was that you could avoid combat in Raedric's Hold completely. If this was a BioWare game, you would fight through waves and waves of enemies and get a cosmetic choice at the end.

Just send one guy in to talk and keep the rest of the party at the bottom of the stairs.

I liked that the Lord of the Castle is actually difficult and can kick your ass.

And i liked how he assumed im with Kolsc, which was completely fitting for a man in that situation, having killed his wife and all, with open rebellion going on. And then he isnt easy. That was good.
It should be difficult if you are invading someone castle, not easier, as it usually is.
Make you rethink the plan a little bit.

I did it on level 4, hard, first time, i think, but it wasnt easy.

The first problem with health and endurance, for me at least, is that they are based mainly on the classes. The second one is that the bonus hp/end per point is shit. 3%, really? It should be at least 5 or 6% and the hp/end gain difference between the classes should be tweaked. Fuck 3 Con fighters whos HP/End are still bigger than my 18 Con rogues HP/End.

Resolve should had something like a +/- % negative effect and reversed positive effect duration or a -/+ 2%DR per point.

I dont get why Perception cant have accuracy altering. A -/+ 2 or 3% per point and a little class accuracy tweaking-nerfing and BAM, another useful stat. Everybody is saying that "Oh NO, if Per got acc boosts everybody would maxing it first". This is true if your game has a weapon skill system but in PoE everybody can use everything so why not?
Or if interrupt delays were a little bit higher, like weak->0.5s, average->1s, strong->1.5s, perception would be much better.

Sigh... I hope some basic rule modding will be available in the future.

My biggest gripe with Sawyer's system is there is no accuracy attribute. It's totally class based. So even IF you give your wizard ideal stats for using a broadsword, he's still gonna suck at it. Forget trying to do anything creative with the classes while their health pools and accuracy ratings are gated behind a class modifier.

Basically, why would I ever use a ranger if I want just pure ranged dps? A rogue with a ranged weapon is likely better. Only thing nice about a ranger is the pet.

Yes, those fucking class gates. As now it feels like class=primary stats+combat abilities and attributes=small bonuses/penalities instead of class=combat abilities+small bonuses and attributes=primary stats.
Dont get me wrong, I love the game's music, graphics, atmosphere, world and writing but this class/stat system is just lazy and infuriating.

I was just looking over the purchase options. Why are they asking extra money for a pdf booklet on the lore? Seems like the pdf should be given out free to get people interested.

Terrific. Excellent work.

I bought a hard copy of the lore book, and it is really good. They spent quite a bit of time on it.

If you are referring to the guidebook; it's the pdf-version of a hardcover that's available. Personally I bought the hardcover, for a pdf I think the pricetag is too heavy. There's a small pdf Almanach written as ingame lore ( plus a cookbook of Tim Cain) which you can't buy anywhere else. Nice to have I guess but not worth the extra money if it's just a pdf.

All in all the available purchase options aren't that great because it's only digitally available. In Germany there's a box version as well but it has Steam-drm though I'll pass on this one.

On this German site (english available) you can get the digital Steam versions for cheap: http://www.gamesrocket.de/download/Pillars-of-Eternity-Hero-Edition-Win-Mac-Linux.html?ref=206
The Royal version costs as much as the regular version on other sites. Haven't tried but if you don't mind Steam that's probably the way to go for an official version.

The game expects you to have an early adventurer. You can use him for escort stuff and adventuring later.

Yeah, that appears to be the case. Will do that in my next playthrough. Right now my party has grown in both size and power enough to make mincemeat out of most encounters.

You may think differently by the time you get to the areas around Twin Elms.

The game is reasonably challenging for me on Hard. It's off and on like a real RPG without level scaling SHOULD be: sometimes I'm clearly too strong, sometimes clearly too weak, sometimes the challenge is just right. The game doesn't factor in what other content I've done when presenting me with a piece of new content. It's an organic feeling that I'd almost forgotten.

I stand by my early praise of the game (above), but have one major criticism:

I would prefer the character creation screen not to default to Angela Davis.

On twitter Josh said it's random. :M

I should mention that the game is reviewing extremely well - it's clearly going to be both Obsidian and Paradox's highest rated game ever. Here's a list of all the reviews and impressions pieces we were able to find:

I see very little point in even looking at the list. The same sites that throw 10/10 to skyrims and mass effects, rarely less than 7/10 to anything else, always worthless when it comes to provide a real information about the game.

PoE is 10/10 in my rating. That's information you need.
