Wouldn't be surprised if the third 'maybe' review is his anyway since he's so mad about Roxor's one and also Infinitron's favourite Codexer.
it wouldnt be a "maybe" review at all since he already believes that PoE in its shitty state is better than BG1+expac/IWD1+expac/IWD2 and with minor upgrades from incoming expac will be better than BG2

Grunker and VD have a similar overall final appraisal of the game. They only differ over the relative magnitute of its various niggles.

Yeah just like Wasteland 2. Why do these bootlicker's reviews warrant an official tag, not say the dozens reviews, commentaries from other members of the community.

No, not just like Wasteland 2. With the Wasteland 2 review, VD and Eric were so much in agreement that it was hard (impossible, really) to tell that the review was the work of two people at all. Not so in this one.

I think it's Decado. I like his writing style and it would be interesting to read his opinion.

Felipe's review is also really gud, mostly favorable to roxor's due to saying about the same things but in a much more concise manner. Even if it isn't on the front page but just its own thread.

I have mixed feelings about PoE. I don't regret buying it, but I'm pretty sure I'd be pissed if I had backed this okay-to-mediocre game. I kinda regret not waiting for Steam Sales, tho...

One thing I know for sure: the epic battle between haters and shills in the Codex Forums is A LOT better than every single PoE battle. Roxor would make a MUCH more compeling final boss than shitty Thaos, of that I am certain.

Here is an idea: how about linking to the PoE subforum instead? Add a note like "this game is a hot topic on the Codex, so here's the link to the PoE subforum, reach your own conclusions, gentlemen".

It's a bit of an ideological battle between casualfags/goons and grogs.

Criticizers are just the vocal minority.. :smug:
Maybe a minority. Cognitive elite in any case.

I was thinking the same thing but my opinion is biased. It was very interesting to see the break down of who literally jerks to this game every night and who evaluates it critically taking all Ermagawd Obsurdian fanboyism out of the equation.

I don't think that's really the case.

For one thing, if you're counting yourself as a side in this battle, then I don't think your opinions on gameplay are that representative of the typical "grog". You've always seemed okay with all these notions of balance and stuff.

Plus, in another thread, you just said the numbers behind PoE's mechanics are harder to get a grasp of than D&D's, which doesn't sound very casual.

You're also way too upset at the goons, which is a bit charming, because it means you actually think Sawyer might have turned out more to your liking "if those goons hadn't brainwashed him!". Come on, dude, anything he did is on him, not on evil goons and badgamers.

What I'm seeing on the Codex is a lot of people who are upset that PoE isn't more of an Avellone-style "brave metaphysical fantasy" type of game, rather than a Sawyer-style historyfag "find your own motivation" sort of thing ala FO:NV. And then there are those who just really really want the game to be a BG2 clone in terms of items, encounters, etc, which I guess is kind of groggy, but seems more specific than that.

Actually it is, if you don't include me in the equation.

No fucking shit.

I don't see many people complaining that PE isn't an Avellone narrative heavy game with shit combat like PS:T and KotOR2 :P I think there's quite a few people here that liked F:NV but think Pillars of Eternity ain't that good. One guy that lurks here, Raszius, for instance - F:NV is one of his favourite games but he thinks PE is dogshit in comparison.

I have the same opinion.

I was also very optimistic before the release, considering Sawyer's experience this should have been great. I saw a lot of people defending him doing a reverse after release. Even Roguey doesn't seem to appreciate all that went down in the game, from his sig.

I feel the same way.. FO:NV is one of the best Bethesda Engine games IMO and far surpasses PoE.. Story is Story, I don't care that much.. If a story captures me and I get into it, great - but I don't really care if it doesn't as long as it's not overtly pandering which PoE isn't.. It's just a little try hard.

I hate PoE purely based on a level design / itemization / progression / encounter design level

What I'm seeing on the Codex is a lot of people who are upset that PoE isn't more of an Avellone-style "brave metaphysical fantasy" type of game, rather than a Sawyer-style historyfag "find your own motivation" sort of thing ala FO:NV. If that covers the critics, shouldn't we also lump the fanboys into a few categories - in the interests of balance, you know?

What I'm seeing on the Codex is a lot of people eager to give Josh Sawyer a rimjob, no matter what type of turd he's just squeezed out. And then there are those who initially claimed to be backing the game because they really, really enjoyed BG/IWD, but whose main defense strategy for PoE is relentlessly attacking those games. Finally, we have Irenaeus, who was actually just troll-spamming his way to self-ejection, but was hailed as a valued ally by the less-perceptive Obsidian groupies.

Except that isn't what's mentioned in any of the PoE discussions. You more or less nailed it yourself in your - characteristically dickish ;) - comment that Codexers can't appreciate the low level subtlety of PoE's mechanics. They don't like turning the tide in battle with a well-placed -10% recovery time debuff, which they find boring, but want something more spectacular, a la BG mage battles.

That's why every discussion about PoE eventually revolves around whether or not stats or abilities "matter", which invariably leads to pro-Sawyerites like you defending them as obviously mattering on a purely functional level, and opponents denying it based on them not mattering in a way that is to them interesting, rather than purely functional.

That doesn't seem very balanced to me, since there was nothing pejorative about my post.

This is just another way of saying "That's not what I said".. Just because you used a fancy word doesn't mean I'm not on to you.

I think "not a BG2 clone" covers that, doesn't it? Interestingly, the whole "subtle vs extreme" dichotomy seems to fit with people's reactions to the game's story as well. Sawyer just seems like kind of a subtlety-appreciating guy.
