luj1 please add Approaching Infinity.

sci-fi roguelike that feels like star trek by way of tales of maj'eyal in space... space exploration and battles, landing on planets with an away team, various events, trading, diplomacy, lots of choices, lots of builds both for personnel and your ship, various factions, can craft gear or find loot on planets or space stations, can mine for shit and sell it, variety of quests both main, faction and side. can come across wrecked spaceships and loot them or fix them up and take it for yourself.

Sounds amazing. Like a spiritual successor to Star Control 2.

Seems oddly specific, like one of those Jason Liang "Best RPG set in medieval Hungary and developed by no more than 4 people (before March 1999)" polls.

Not really. I simply wanted to exclude roguelikes with managerial and/or settlement aspects. Sibylla said it well below.

... no overworld, no simulationism, no clutter, just a single mission to go deeper in the dungeon.

Roguelikes are dungeon crawlers and a subgenre of RPGs. So let's stick to that.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is my all time favorite. Devs keep streamlining and taking out features with each release but its still the same addictive game based on Crawl.

Is there a legacy build with these features still available? I would like to try it.

Voted for Cataclysm: DDA for sheer immersive autism.
NEO Scavenger deserves a mention too.

Of the others I've most enjoyed (or raged at) ADOM, Nethack, Caves of Qud, Doom RL, SwotS: the Pit and Infra Arcana.
There's also Tangledeep which hasn't been mentioned.

Any reasons for the ones I mentioned which you chose not to add? I'm baffled as to how Brogue and Sil wouldn't qualify as roguelikes, for example, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them were to get the most votes.

Because Sil is the same lineage of roguelike as Moria/Angband. Which are already included in the poll. Same for Brogue and Rogue.

Oof, very tough list. I cut my teeth on ADOM, but find it too slow nowadays, DCSS is my goto and is bite-sized, so I always poke and prod at it, I also love the streamlining process. I'd say it's the purest roguelike at present. Qud is amazing, with deep and broad systems, but it's still unfinished. In the end, I have to give the vote to my beloved ToME4, it could use some improvements, especially in the early and late-game, but I think it's the most well-rounded of the list, a true luminary of the roguelike genre. It's also the only game I have more than a thousand hours and counting, so there.

I'd also give a shoutout to Desktop Dungeons, for distilling the puzzle essence of roguelikes to its basest form (and cool art). But I'm not sure it fits the genre.

Honestly this poll is pretty stupid (how we've reached a position where the 'best roguelike' poll includes Neo Scavenger and not Brogue I'll never understand), and would probably be best remade by someone who knows more about roguelikes.

I had to buy Tales of Maj'Eyal on Steam.

I received so many recommendations for it.

Last night I played it until 6 AM (until I died).

It is like heroin.

I admitted in the OP that I am ignorant about this genre. So you can fuck off.

Rogue is the first option on the poll. What are the differences between Rogue and Brogue? They are probably very minor.

ToME trumped everything in the poll. My advice to you Covenant is to remake the poll. And I bet ToME will win again.
