So far I have been struggling with the addition of picking pockets to the game. The current solution is as follows:

- Player can pick NPC's pockets via 'hard skill check', i.e. they need to have Pickpockets at certain level (levels go from 1 to 3) to be able to steal stuff
- Level also affects what items the player gets - the higher the level, the better the items
- Player may also get better loot after combat if they the skill
- They can also put stuff in NPC's pockets - this can be useful with some quests where they have to frame someone for a crime
- The skill is also used when stealing stuff from various containers (cabinets, etc.). If the check fails, the player is usually attacked
- Player with high Intelligence and Intimidation and/or Manipulation skill can talk themselves out of these fights, though

Why though?

Real experts can reach those "meatpockets" that usually have the most valuable items.

Actually I just thought that characters with higher skill level would get better rewards, like they do with Haggling and quest rewards. This may motivate the player to put more skill points into Pickpocketing.

Beta 5 released! Beware of spoilers.

https://www.prisonscape.com/blog/?p=883

Trucking along.

Party management

– Recruit henchmen and add them to your party!
– Combine different henchmen: use damage dealers in one situation and tanks and healers in another.

Combat v4

– New enemy type: Thief. Kill these ones fast or they might steal your hard earned loot!
– Now intelligence affects henchmen scaling. The smarter you are, the better your henchmen are!
– Effect of strength has been adjusted as well: certain player abilities are much more deadly now.

Player skill updates

– Medical can now be used in combat to heal yourself and your henchmen. It also auto-heals party members after combat.
– Meditation gives you significant XP boosts when doing quests and beating enemies.
– Intimidation allows you to intimidate other inmates and guards in dialogue. It also unlocks verbal attacks in combat (Mock, Intimidate, Threaten).

+ lots of bug and balancing fixes!

Accoring to the Prisonscape blog, they're canceling the Steam release and may focus on releasing a freeware version if they finish it.

Summary

  • Prisonscape release in Steam has been cancelled
  • No traction in Steam and unable to make the gameplay more interesting
  • People who pre-ordered through the site using PayPal will be refunded. We will contact you at the email you used for pre-ordering.
  • Freeware release possible at some point, no timetable yet
Why?

First off, thanks to everyone who pre-ordered and supported Prisonscape! Without your interest and help we wouldn’t have even made this far. We are sorry that you had to wait so long and ultimately didn’t get to experience the game.

Unfortunately we were unable to make the game interesting enough where players would have been really hooked on it. As it stands now the game is kind of “OK” but we don’t want to release a lackluster game. Especially since Steam is flooded with thousands of games every year (every month?).

Also we got very little traction in Steam (wishlist numbers) which means that releasing the game wouldn’t have made any financial sense.

The project will still live in the background and hopefully we can at some point polish it enough that it can be released as freeware. Check prisonscape.com periodically to see what’s up!

Make the Codex Great Again!
It's a shame but tbh I'm not surprised. I always had a bad vibe about the project. Not sure what it was, maybe the lack of a strong cohesive vision and media material from PekkaK made it seem more like a pipe dream than a foreseeable reality.
