Are you saying people don't this anyway? You can't play an FRPG online without running into at least 5 Drizzt clones within a minute, whether they are named Drizzt, or Drizzt-in-all-but-name.

Huge difference betwean Drizzt clone and Drizzt.

I don't know why the discussion went to copying other people's work. I thought it was about the time after which people could enjoy said work for free. It would be stupid to also let those people copy that work and profit from it and if that's what BethesdaLove said then he's a fucking moron.

If something falls into the public domain, you can't make a profit from it? Damn Shakespeare pirates... write your own plays.

Or is somebody actually arguing that after a certain period the work suddenly ought to be price-fixed for $0 or sit in some ownership limbo?

Also, God forbid Mickey Mouse fall into the public domain at some point. It's not like Disney hasn't profited from other works becoming public and creating adaptations from them.

Nobody stops you to develop something better than viagra btw. It´s already available.
Wtf does this have to do with anything?!

And nobody stops you from developing your own cartoon-mouse. It´s just not permitted to use Mickey Mouse in your cartoonstories. There a several good reasons for this too. Eg you haven´t invented it and you lazy bum would just take advantage of the work Walt Disney has done.
Dont you see where this leads? Its not even like Mikey is an ingenious design but using even his ears is illegal.

Well, this dude has been throwing down sketches but half of them can be already copyrighted. Tough luck.

Or you could use Mickey Mouse in a porn cartoon to literally rape the franchise...
In-fucking-deed! Like Fallout.

What exactly is the difference "economically" betwean making 10 rehashed shit games and 10 new great games if they`ll sell same amount, i`ll pay same taxes and so on? Furthermore if i`ll have to reinvest on every shit and won`t be able to go to my cash cow then that means that it`s highly possible that i`ll go bankrupt, less taxes and work places for my country.
Its a question about an existing market. IP'ed content is of-limits to any investor, hobby creator, whatever. Even if there is a potential market but the IP holder doesnt move. And its 20 years man! Reinvesting after 20 years is a must-do. I am not saying that they dont reinvest into new games. I am saying there are a lot of IP corpses preventing anybody from doing anything with it.

Extended IP rights are based on the idea of adding draw for people to produce these works.
Bullshit, its done for greedy, immoral corporations who try to extinguish any competition forever by any means.

It's not impossible for artists to work with shorter IP concepts, but it'd primarily help the consumer - who don't need it - and not the creators? - who do.
Show me the artists who profit from GOG. Show me 1! artist who profits from 'his' copyright from 20 years ago.

...indie developers (of niche games, no so much of casuals), who absolutely need long sellers to have any realistic long-term tenability.
Do you actually believe that Vogel will lose 1 single sale of Avernum 1! in 2020 to a free copy?! Or Age of Decadence will still be selling like sliced bread in 3042?

There is an obvious difference between denying other companies a very specific, I'd say, unique knowledge that can save/cure/help people and denying some talentless hack the right to rip off someone else's cartoon or game setting?
It was an economic example. I am inclined to believe that it is universal.

Do we fucking need 10 more studios drawing milking Mikey or would we rather encourage people to come up with their own shit?
Yes, we fucking do! If there is a market after 20 years, go fucking ahead! Coming up with own shit? Have you seen anything new under this sun? In 100 years every form of a mouse is gonna be copyrighted by a conglomerate of entertaiment companies. It will be impossible for someone to draw anything resembling a mouse.

I don't know why the discussion went to copying other people's work. I thought it was about the time after which people could enjoy said work for free. It would be stupid to also let those people copy that work and profit from it and if that's what BethesdaLove said then he's a fucking moron.
Never ever said anything about communism. Butthurt "100 years of IP are not enough" preacher misread me and than it went from there... :smug:

Here is an addition to the economical argument. Marketing searches for any cheap brand recognition, see XCOM. They even ignore the shitty Apocalypse and Enforcer. Let em. Master of Magic? Go ahead EA!

My honest tummy feeling is that if the western society abolished ip in cheapo investment areas like songs or settings or what your character looks like, we would not see a decline in progress or economic activity and in my opinion there would be no moral breach.

You do not understand the outrage: they sell free content! The publishers do not count because they are greedy jews and the devs do not exist anymore. It's bad enough that old games are getting a second life and allowed to reaffirm their strong popularity, but Poles are making money out of it!

I know right? I was at the Van Gogh museum not to long ago, went into the giftshop, picked up a few posters and walked out. Bitch at the teller was all "sir, you have to pay for those" and I was all "You greedy Jewish whore, it's not like van Gogh gets any money from these sales" :smug:

His relatives do.
