I have seen some video footage, but realistically I want to know if anyone here has played it, and how good is the game? For reference, I enjoyed Stranger of Sword City up until I had to do an inane amount of grinding at the end, otherwise I had fun with it.

Not particularly enjoyable and not at all complex (dungeon structure or battle mechanics.)

With a shounen plot.

And a difficulty level that even game journalists called 'too easy' and in one case 'the easiest dungeon crawler I've ever played'.

Play only if you must try every japanese crawler.

Innovative Battle System:
Unlike ordinary turn based RPG battles, Ray Gigantadopts a unique style where you will be fighting massive enemies from different distances and perspectives. Your party is comprised of 3 characters, each with their own unique abilities to engage in 3-way view battles. Also use the rhythm-based, Slash Beat system to unleash deadly attacks while feeling the fate of the heroes and heroine resonate through their bodies!

What is this even supposed to mean? What's the point of these Steam descriptions if I have to go dig up forum posts or youtube videos to figure out what the fuck the translator / developer failed to convey themselves? Anyway, I'm getting some mixed messages here with Steam reviewers saying stuff like
Dungeons: A lot more complex and interesting than Stranger of Sword City so far. The dungeons are closer to Wizardry in their complexity.
except everyone else seems to disagree with him.

I've read a french review for theps vita version, it seems its complete shit, its likely the same on PC. Casual ,uninteristing dungeons, far too easy etc.. So be cautious with those positive steam reviews.

i am removing this from inventory right now. From the japanese reviews i have read (herp depr, actual japanese reviews so you know they must be legit!), Ray gigant was/is Exp. Inc. / Team Muramasa's recent and most blatant attempt at creating a "teen-friendly" "RPG-crawler-lite" out of their existing game assets and all of the japanese bloggers and reviewers agreed that:

- It was easy. (But that this was not necessarily a bad thing.)
- It is easily the most gorgeous DRPG (i.e. "RPG-crawler-lite") to come out in years. The graphics are beautiful.
- Its mechanics are 'simple'. (But, once again; this was not necessarily a bad thing.)

However, what were bad things:

- The dungeons ranged in quality/complexity wildly with long stretches of uninteresting "long-hallway-design" meant to serve as backdrop for the "Shounen-type" teen-drama storyline.
- The fact that there are at least 2 legit, "Wizardry-style" dungeons in the game only serve to further annoy the player seeing as how the game forces them to spend the majority of their time in non-good maps.
- The attempt at creating an interesting "Shounden-type" teen-drama storyline failed miserably for most of the japanese bloggers/reviewers as basically anyone who was even mildly interested in playing the game were DRPG/'crawler fanatics, and not especially looking for a "more traditional story-based RPG". Hence the massive word-of-mouth dissapointment.

ALL THAT SAID:

- It sold extremely well in japan; well enough that Exp Inc / Team Muramasa decided to localize it into English for both the VITA and also for Windows PC (Steam).

I'll definitely be making a thread all about it as soon as I finish downloading/installing it later today, and I'll be fair and balanced. I already know it's not meant to be Elminage: Gothic or even Stranger of Sword City-level of complexity, so don't expect me to write a huge rant about how "dumbed down" the game is mechanically. I'll try to concentrate on what it actually has to offer and see if it is worth giving it a shot.

After all, if someone is "desperate" for a less-known japanese 'crawler there are many that can be recommended right now that, while mentioned constantly in these threads, I am 100% sure are still not being played by the people who read these threads such as:

- The NDS 'crawler "The Dark Spire".
- The Windows PC (Steam) 'crawler "Paper Sorcerer".

Hell, I'm sure a lot of the people asking about Ray Gigant still have not even played through the fantastically amazing Wizardry Empire 2 translation done by MrRichard999 and Helly for Windows PC.

bros.,..

20 mins in... still the game is introducing comic relief characters in some sort of prelude. the game begins with some awesome visuals of the "Gigants" attacking and then...! BOOM, CHAPTER ONE: ICHIYA'S STORY

and here i am 20 mins into chap. 1 madly pressing "X" frantically hoping to get to the 1st battle. fuck, the 1st moment of character control. Things are not looking good.

EDIT: also the "story" is literally a re-skin of the studio's line of Gen XTH titles. The anti-Gigant "teams" or whatever are basically the exact same shit as the bases of operations in Gen XTH 1 (and 2, and 3), and/or in Operation Babel/Abyss for the people who played those games on VITA.

The main difference being is that the characters in Gigant are even dumber.

i'm compressing an .avi i just recorded of the intro fight. honestly i don't know if i can stomach this. already almost 35 minutes clocked and i've yet to see what the dungeons will be like.

the battle system seems promising... except everything i've read says it is wasted. btw, i hate fucking FRAPS for recording.

Got the game for 4 euro bucks gifted on Steam. Expecting casual mediocrity when I play it some day if what aweigh said still holds true.

Look at that male character, he has his shield chained to his sword, wtf? Why are you trying to limit your movement range? Especially since the chain is wrapped on your back. Are you trying to hit your enemy or are you trying to whip your ass with a chain everytime you swing your sword?
