There was never a direct explanation but as someone who did follow the events, I think the silence came from the bad PvP reception in 2020 and had them pretty much lay low to focus on PvE content partially due to PvP alpha reception and the fact they got the message that people who backed it was looking forward to it more for PvE/co-op content in the first place.Has it ever been explained why the devs went radio silent a year ago and why they were pumping out PvP builds? This is my most anticipated game but I'm hesitant to buy it because of their track record. Who's to say they won't pull another stunt like that again?
As for why they prioritized PvP builds before that? Most likely that they found it easier to work on that than certain singleplayer aspects (as someone I knew who had access to the very early PvE Supporter build around 2019, the AI was extremely bad). Now if they'll pull that stunt again, probably not imo. The EA release not having said PvP component at all probably means they finally understand what people want and will just prioritize on that now. Plus the fact they now are selling it on Steam directly with more attention in general means they will be put on blast a lot harder if they go completely radio silent again.
