    Rise!
As a new emperor of Rome, guide your country through the uncertain times, when the Empire is being constantly surrounded by the enemy nations. Don’t wait for the inevitable, but show them your might and bring the war to their doorstep! For the power of Rome is great and the Emperor’s fury brings death.

    Command!
Gather your legions of the fiercest warriors in the whole Empire. Prepare for the bloodshed and create a strategy that will bring to shame the leaders across the Europe. Lead your troops to the victory as a wise and tireless commander. Give swift orders and change your plan accordingly to the situation on the battlefield. Flank, push them back and destroy. Everyone shall kneel before the armies of the Emperor.

    Conquer!
Stand face to face with various fractions and bring them a crushing defeat. No Gauls, Huns, Greeks, Spartans or other barbarians will spit in the face of the Emperor. Make them pay for their impertinence. No matter how strong is their army, the Roman Empire will bring them devastation across the whole Europe. On the land and on the sea.

    Venture!
Manifest the glory of Rome, by battling in the distant lands of various countries. Rage war throughout the Greece, Carthage, Persia, Egipt and Great Britain. Let the glory of the Roman Empire be spread in Europe, by the means of sword. Make them fear your anger and marvel at your wisdom.

    Main features:

    • Take part in a large scale, epic battles that mimic the real life war campaigns of the greatest Emperor’s in the history of Rome.
    • Engage the foreign armies in a tactical Real-Time Strategy fashion and use your dexterity to quickly crush your enemies.
    • Become a great leader who builds his Empire’s glory through multiple victories over the barbaric nations.
    • Make use of your cunning and make swift decisions that will lead your legions of various historically accurate unit types to glory.

I wish them luck. Total War badly needs some competition.

That's like what, a third of the Empire? Asia and Africa don't get any glory?

Seriously though it looks visually impressive but if it's only the battle part of Total War, meh. Most of those are skipped anyway. The strategic layer is where it's at.

They should have made Medieval Empire Wars seeing how Total War series have still popular and active Rome 2 and how fans have been begging for years to get Medieval sequel.

I hoped to get a sequel to Praetorians one day... maybe this is going to be it.

Honestly though, I would like any Roman themed RTS to focus more on smaller scale combat so that you could micro individual units (switching formations, throwing pilums etc), this will obviously be more akin to TW... well as was already pointed out, TW without strategic layer is not that great a proposition. We will see I guess.

Probably a good idea to focus on the battles first if you're a very small developer. If people like 'em, then they can work on a more TW-style game. You can't just jump into it out of nowhere.

To be honest, a strategic layer where you essentially act as a supreme ruler of an empire/country is pretty dumb when you also have a tactical layer like in Total War.

So I think it's a good idea to start small and perfect one at least.

Didn't stop CA from jumping into it out of nowhere. And they innovated the whole thing from the concept to the tech. Of course it'd be hard when their top priority seems to be graphic whoredom.

Disconnected tactical battles don't really work. There's nothing to keep you engaged.

It's not dumb, it's the reason why I still play Total War despite its many problems and shit AI. Getting to play out epic battles that have the context of many turns of empire building behind them is the best strategy game experience out there.

Combat in games like Civ or EU4 feels lame, you just throw units at each other and the outcome is decided with dice rolls. But having only the battles without the empire building context around it isn't quite as satisfying.

Building up your nation and struggling against your neighbors, and then having that showdown of 3000 vs 3000 men is amazing.

My dream game would be something like Civ with Total War battles.

CA were already an established team and had significant financial backing from Electronic Arts due their previous titles. Not to mention the difference in time and cost of development compared to over 20 years ago.

Yes but still a small team doing something completely new. And yes, like I said, it's hard to do make good games when you're busy masturbating to polygon counts. The best strategy games today are still made by microscopic teams and have minimal graphics (Dominions, Conquest of Elysium, Shadow Empires).

Honestly, they didn't jump on it out of "nowhere". Strategic conquest with real-time tactical battles in the Roman setting was already done back in 1990 by Centurion. So the Total War franchise was not actually breaking any new ground in any particular way, especially given that they had already done this with Shogun and Medieval.

But you know what Centurion had that none of the RTWs has? Fucking NAVAL BATTLES.

    Come on, man.

But you know what naval shaenanigans Centurion actually had that no Rome Total War (or any Total War for that matter) had? An optional sex scene taking place in a boat.
