Every now and then I get PM/emails from denizens of other forums who feel the urge to inform me of intellectually stimulating discussions that could be summarized as "Codex is teh suck".

RPG Codex is a ridiculous place and nothing with the Bioware name would ever be looked upon favorably there. I am stunned when I see RPG devs doing interviews with them. Its a sad state of affairs when that shithole is thought of as the PC RPG fanbase/community/whatever.
It's kinda ironic that olaf visits the Codex often and is a registered member.

It's not the PC RPG fanbase. It's a very small portion that likes a very specific type of game. (Planescape: Torment is about the only one they really like)

I like working with them -- obviously, since my days at BW, I've had a love-hate relationship with RPG Codex -- but I don't think they're anywhere close to the full representation of the RPG space... and any PR rep who thinks that way doesn't know much about RPGs. The "PC gamers" referenced earlier in the thread were -- in the case of the Dragon Age announcement -- BioWare's primary target group... people who bought BG2 and/or NWN and were primarily concerned with traditional PC RPGs.
Tom, baby, do you have some kinda reading comprehension disability you haven't told us about?

Some fun reading where RPG Codex is mentioned:

I'm all for elitism-- please, I'd say in all modesty that I'm a far superior elitist than well over twelve billion other elitists in competition for the throne of cool, and my attitude, complexion, skin tone, singing voice, neatly circumcised penis, smart smile and full head of hair handily beats those few remaining in line-- but wow, rpgcodex is far too elitist for me. Who do those guys think they are?

Yeah, everyone here hates Bioware. BG II would never, ever, end up as the 5th greatest CRPG at the Codex on a top 10 poll. Never.

It's just people who had a particular mainstream game they liked trashed and they get all pissy and throw a dismissing hissyfit about how we're all the same and a minority and whatever.

The way I see it, is all those people are just a bunch of wussies who always need a group to associate themselves as part of instead of being an individual, so when they come here and see their associated group getting trashed they throw a fit and try to write us off.

People can try and call the Codex a 'hivemind' but I think those sites are much more solid hiveminds, hiveminds of a stupid nature. Like the ES Boards.

QT3 isn't any more of a hivemind than we are. They've got more Bio fanboys than we do, but Volourn makes up for that on our end. And we get our share of Oblivion defenders here, while they have Desslock. Overall, it's just another group of nerds arguing about games, like the Codex.

BTW, I'll take Volourn over Desslock anyday.

We're "elitists"? I guess we could say that bitching on RPGCodex about the sorry state of modern cRPGs is a genteel distinction to which the common herd has no claim, but "elitists"? That's pushing it way too far.

Desslock was going to write a column about this site? For some bizarre, and crazy reason I think that would work in this site's favour.

Oh no! There are people who don't like us! What am I gonna do?! Behave nicely and say "yes sir!" to every pseudoRPGbullshit that people keep trying to feed us?

Instead of trying to find joyness in a game, some people force themselves to enjoy it.

That's the reason Desslock is so angry. Like many Bethesda-loving nerds he is trapped between his pavlovian admiration for Bethesda ("the only real RPG company left") and whatever few traces of taste and common-sense he still has. Each time he is forced to lie to himself and loses self-respect... frustration builds up and needs an outlet. Those who tell the truth (reminding him of his own patheticness) are ideal targets.

The majority on those threads seem to have valid, well reasoned points, but Desslock seems to spend half of his time ardently trying to shield Bethesda from any and all criticism then spending the remainder trying to convince himself that he makes any sense at all.

I believe the correct response is "a little of both".

Desselock can always be found up the current "million copies shipped" CRPG developer's ass so far, he can suck the saliva soaked doritos and queso dip out of their gums for his nourishment. Often is it heard around popular CRPG development studios, "I thought I had to take a huge dump. Turns out it was just Desselock making a new nest in my ass after reading our units shipped press release." He's the jet setting ass mole of CRPG journalism.

Oh yeah, has Rob Merritt piped up yet? He's been pissy ever since I replied to his "I prefered Fallout 2 over Fallout." with "And some people prefer scat porn." Apparently that offended him.

I got banned from NMA by just saying I liked Fallout 2 a bit more than the original since it reminded me more of Gamma World.

I got band from RPG Codex for just saying I planned to buy Fallout Tactics for the console.

So it takes little effort to get banned from those sitesl

I liked BG2, but I understand full-well that most people here don't share my empahy for this game, but does it make me bitter about those people? No.

I have plenty of other preferences that perfectly well concur with those of other codexians here.

Either you have an 'open mind' or you're an 'opinionated fuck'. Well, it just so happens that Codexers are opionated fucks.

Unless you actually bother to read threads and take the time to understand what people are saying.

I really think some people don't know shit from clay, just because they don't bother looking. They make kneejerk decisions based on appearances.

But I guess that's why Oblivion sold so well, no?

Fallout Tactics was never a console game...

... and that leads me to think he's talking about Fobos, in which case I would have banned him aswell.

I think a majority of people here liked BG2. I just think most of us aren't proclaiming it the best RPG of all time or anything.

Did Rob Merrit really get banned for buying FO:BOS? That would be the most awesome ban offense ever. LOLZ!

I don't think so, but I could be mistaken. Liking/buying a crappy game is not something we ban people for, and there is never a shortage of crappy games and people who like them. So, Rob either got offended and left or was banned for something else.

He isn't banned, why would we ban him? We're proud to have him as a very contributive part of our enormous Troika-loving community.
