Playing Granado Espada when i have nothing else to do and almost at the start of the game there is demon infested monastery. When portal to hell opened underground bishop raised army of zealots and mercs with his personal assets and led them to battle in desperate attempt to seal the gate. Literal opposite of Lazarus from Diablo.
It just occured to me how rare such characters nowadays. Religion always bad and ebul. Please, list me some games with decent and heroic priests. Preferably high rank priests.

Fire and water mages from Gothic I-II, Archolos as well.

Disagreed. The world is in danger yet Pyrokar which could easily nuke the entire orc army with fire rain + speed potion spend the entire eternity on the church, doing nothing. He sends novices to hunt a traitor knowing that there are lots and lots of mindcontroled dark magicians(seekers), they ask 1k gold to merely join in the monastery and have no problem with you stealing important artifact during the test of fire. The monastery of Innos also holds knowledge on how to cast powerful dark magic spells like army of darkness and summon demon. And this all male monastery is full of sausages and wine.

You put too much thought in trying to argue video game logic in a game that was obviously undercooked.

You think simping for games made by a nation of atheist ants has anything to do with that development?
There is one other reason. Fantasy is usually Medieval-like, right? Western medieval-like at that. Those priest in games are generally based on priesthood in western medieval culture = catholic. USA-ians culture = protestant at its core. Protestant don't like Catholics. Voila, problem solved with simple math.
Also Jews who don't like Christianity as a whole.

Amerimutt movies portray historical protestantism just as badly. It's because they're liberals, not because their culture was predominantly proddies.

ToEE has the demon has to be sealed scenario. Heroic deities/servants would be Terjon and the church of St. Cuthbert. There's that fight against Iuz at the end. Although I'm not familiar with OD&D lore so feel free to fill in the blanks.

Heroic fight against ZE elemental evil and bugbears.

St. Cuthbert appears as a stout red-faced man, with a drooping white moustache and flowing white hair. He wears a simple plate mail of + 5 enchantment. Atop his helmet is a crumpled hat, and a starburst of rubies set in platinum hangs on his chest.

St. Cuthbert hates Evil, but his major interest is in Law and Order, and the dual work of conversion and prevention from backsliding of "true believers." He seldom leaves his plane, unless some great duty brings him forth. When on the Prime Plane, he sometimes appears as a manure-covered yokel, or as a wanderer clad in brown and green robes, or as an elderly and slight tinker. In these guises he tests the doctrine of his faithful, or seeks new converts. He can gate to or from Arcadia or the Prime Material Plane at will.

The Lathlander priests in Strahd's possession are trying to do the right thing; it is just that Strahd kind of overpowers them.

Notice how old all these games are.
Perhaps priests should do better.

What, they're supposed to fuck kids and get away with it and the developers should cover their asses? Why (because conservatives care more for the appearances of godliness that for the reality and the suffering of kids, that's why) ?

Only westoids catholics (more like DOGholics amirite) diddle kids, med catholics don't do that. Maybe westoid devs should broaden their horizons for once.

Yet even in Eastern Culture "Priest often implies high probability of being corrupt" is a well known trope. Ditto in many asian games.

Most famously is the Water Margin. The classic chinese novel. One of the main "heroes" is a *priest*, asterisks needed. (There are other "heroes" who are cannibals and they immediately become fast friends.)

Though there is in that novel one priest or monk who is not corrupt and happens to be the most upright and powerful person in the story, he is also more like a supernatural being or sorcerer and an main inspiration for modern xianxia instead. Xianxia is not really about priests.

This novel also may have spawned the lecherous priest / monk or fake priest / monk trope.

The basic idea is probably just the common sense that social power and credulous reception by the public, along with connection to the power of the state, creates too much opportunity for corruption, Gibbon had said.

Gibbon had converted to Catholicism, in fact. He also wrote harshly about monks, abbots, saints, all that.
