I have a question regarding localization, how to translate some RPG words?

For example some translators (not all of them being familiar with RPGs) propose for an English word "level" a german word "stufe" and some propose "level". Similarly Hit Points (HP), how to translate those? Keep it "HP" or go for "LP"?

It's kind of hard for me when I see those from translators and I don't know the language myself :D Both a generic theory and specific examples (various languages) would be appreciated.

German here. Stufe is used in most german RPGs although level would be understood as well.

A more apt and common translation of HP would be TP, or 'Trefferpunkte', e.g. used by german DnD translation.
But Lebenspunkte can be encountered, too, e.g. this is what Das Schwarze Auge/The Dark Eye uses (abbreviated LeP).
