"This message is awaiting moderator approval": All new users must pass through our moderation queue before they will be able to post normally. Until your account has "passed" your posts will only be visible to yourself (and moderators) until they are approved. Give us a week to get around to approving / deleting / ignoring your mundane opinion on crap before hassling us about it. Once you have passed the moderation period (think of it as a test), you will be able to post normally, just like all the other retards.

Who's in Charge?

Administrators

Since the Death of Saint_Proverbius and the Mysterious and as Yet Unexplained Disappearance of Calis, the Codex is run by the following three Administrators, long shall they reign:

- DarkUnderlord - For all technical and forum management issues.
- baby arm (aka Jason) - Forum management and all matters relating to Tacticular Cancer.
- Taluntain - Issues regarding annoying advertisements, slow server issues or time-outs. Along with account upgrades and payment and / or donation issues.

Only Administrators have the power to ban and nuke (delete account + all posts) users. Historically, we've used these powers more often than people have ever realised.

Super Moderators

We currently have one Super Moderator who (if I set it up right) has the power to moderate all forums. That is JarlFrank. If you have an issue with a thread and you're not sure who to harass about it / you have but nothing happened, he should be your port of call.

Moderators

Each of the forums also has a number of moderators who are responsible for ensuring the place doesn't go full retard. Due to the shitcock that is XF, you have no idea who they are, so here's a list:

Beyond that, we also have a number of Staff who are responsible for news, interviews, writing reviews and such:

- VentilatorOfDoom - Chief Newsie

- Edward_R_Murrow - Content
- Crooked Bee - Codex Twitter Girl

About the Codex

The Codex is a place to debate and discuss RPGs. It was founded by a group of RPG fans who wanted somewhere to discuss how terrible RPGs were without getting banned on various developers' official forums - especially due to the nature of their debating. As such, the Codex is quite happy for people to come here and vigourously debate - until they run out of breath - how good or bad their favourite / least favourite RPG is. Codexians should feel free to do so without fear of being banned for using "offensive language", having their thread locked because it "got too heated" or warned for "flaming". By all means, feel free to troll each other as much as you please and incite flame-wars with whichever willing participants you are able to find.

You should note however, that due to our tolerance for such debate, The Codex does attract - from time to time - people who like to debate things other than RPGs in such a manner. This is tolerable up to a point. As long as it remains in an appropriate forum it's generally tolerated but if you start dragging that shit all over the place, expect a response from the Administration.

Finally, the Codex was not founded for lulz. While there is lulz and lulz is acceptable, it is not our primary purpose for existing. If you only came here for the lulz, you have come here for the wrong reason. You are likely to one day find yourself on the wrong end of the Administration.

The Rules™

1. "This Post is Awaiting Approval": Due to a long history of not being able to keep out people who have been banned - people who continued to register and re-register accounts with multiple different proxies - all new members must pass through a moderation approval process before they are free to post. This means that for the first couple of posts, every post a new member makes needs to be approved by a Moderator or Administrator before they are visible. We accept this will stifle some people's participation but feel it is worth the risk. Once you've had a handful of posts approved (IE: You've proven that you're not someone we just banned or that you're not just a spammy adbot), your account is upgraded to "Codexian" status and you are free to post without approval being required.

As this approval process relies on a certain amount of discretion and oversight (the Moderators need to make a judgement call when they approve your post), it may mean that some posters have trouble getting through. While we're not after a magnum opus, we do advise that you'll have better luck if your first foray into the Codex is of a more extensive nature than "lol FemShep's ass lol".

2. NSFW: Ignoring the text, the Codex tries to be as visually work friendly as possible. This means you should feel safe to open an RPG thread without seeing tits, ass or whatever the latest internet abomination is - unless you have been appropriately forwarned. Threads that have or are about NSFW images should be appropriately labelled (or will be labelled as required). This also means that you should refrain from posting tubgirl / the latest shock image between img tags. As with all rules we have an exception, and that is that trick linking to such images / sites is perfectly fine and highly encouraged. Refer to this thread for further information. People do need to learn that this is the internet after all.

3. Piracy: We do not mind discussions about piracy, however posts that are seeking or promoting pirated versions of games will be warned, the offending text may be edited out and it may result in a ban if you do it too often. As clarification: "I am seeking and / or promoting a pirated version of something" == BAD vs "Let us have a genuine discussion about piracy and the impacts it has on the game industry" == OKAY. Some Moderators are more anal retentive about this than others. You will have to learn to cope.

4. Child Porn: We have our limits, so images and discussions about child porn are right out. Try it and it will typically result in an insta-ban and nuking of your account - along with deletion of all the posts you've ever made.

5. Retardo Land: The Codex does not lock threads, so feel free to keep abusing one another until page 28 and beyond. We do however, move threads that are deemed stupid or otherwise unworthy into Retardo Land.

6. Shitposting: From time to time, we get users who, upon review of their posts, it is discovered that they have not really added anything of value to the Codex. Their posts are typically only ever in GD and their few forays into the other forums provide little insight or opinion. It's not surprising to find these users often spend all their time complaining about other users rather than debating or discussing actual issues. We define these people as Shitposters and we define their posts as Shitposting.

These users eventually make the mistake of pissing off one of the Moderators with their Shitposting, which leads to said Moderator advising the Administrators, which usually leads to a ban and nuking of all their posts. As a simple rule, if you've gained this much attention and we make a judgement that the Codex would not lose anything by banning you, we will probably ban you. You should note that there are some Moderators who are more than happy to bring these users to the attention of the Administrators on a regular basis and not banning half the forum is an ongoing struggle.

Notes

Report: Above each post you should see a "report" option. Feel free to use it in order to bring a particular post to the attention of the Moderators so that they can deal with it appropriately. As with all your toys, don't abuse it or it will be taken away from you.

Moderator's Discretion: The Administrators have no interest in baby-sitting or second guessing every decision a moderator makes. As such, moderators have free rein within the limits of their powers, to exercise their powers in line with The Rules™ and to make general decisions as they see fit. This includes the moving or renaming of threads (either by request or as deemed necessary), warning users for YARRR Piracy and bringing matters that require more severe action to the attention of the Administrators. Don't expect us to over-rule our Moderators often.

Complaints: If you have a complaint you wish to make against a Moderator because they're being too much of a Nazi moving threads or they Retardo'd your post or whatever, feel free to raise your issue with the Administrators either directly via conversation or publicly via a thread in Site Feedback. Please be advised that if it seems you're being a miserable shitcock about it, we may just ban you instead. As a word of advice, if you are serious about your issue, start a conversation and if you don't really care what happens, post in Site Feedback.

Logging: You should be aware that every action ever taken by a Moderator, Administrator or in fact any user is comprehensively logged, and in many instances can be easily undone with a single click. Tracking someone's actions is easy and as such, any issues can be dealt with appropriately.

Discussion & Debate: As has been previously stated, the Codex is for vigorous debate and discussion. Just try not to be a miserable shitcock about it and you should be fine.

Wasn't there a rule that people get banned when they demand someone other should get banned?

I approve the new rules except for the "Moderation approval" and the "shitposter" rule beeing a bit dodgy. I don't get why we need "moderation approval". Really, it's some of the most annoying "features" a forum can have. If someone wants to shitpost/spam he can do it after beeing approved and just plays nicely before the approval for 5 posts. I mean we already have report buttons and ignore lists and GD isn't visible before registering.

And in regard to shitposters; would sub fall into this category for example?

Subs a 40 year old (or whatever) asian lady with 2 kids. She's a breath of fresh air for a forum full of psychotic asperger afflicted manboons. For that reason her presence makes this place less shitty, and therefore she isn't a shitposter.

DarkUnderlord's Powers of Recall are a terrible, wonderful thing to behold. Woe to those who doubt the length and breadth of his reach; into the dark, misty past he can still delve, and does so regularly, maintaining that which should be forgotten, brooding silently yet longingly about mysteries and events ancient.

What happened to lassez faire?
I dont see the angle at all.

Is this some kind of grabbing at mainstream legitimacy (its called popularity) as prestigious magzine?
Some self righteous stab at "quality" improvement program like no child left behind  ?
Fear of the law?
GF left you and now you spend time fixing the Dex?

Where is this sudden TESFication coming from? Dex was good enough before gayfisting, ignorelist and mods to leave it multiple times...

Most of these rules have been there for a long time. Perhaps you just didn't see them.

I think you were always fairly safe in the forum if you behave like you would with your drinking mates. You can swear, shout, or call someone a stupid asshole, and no one will sulk for more than a day. But there is a definite limit when it comes to annoying, retarded or downright gross stuff, and this includes e.g. child porn, dead kittens, simply annoying images/sounds (MLP) and such like. Pirate links also have to be moderated because otherwise the site would soon become a target for lawyers.

At least that's how I see it, and I'm fine with those rules. I'm just not sure if the Approval-thing works. It may be, people will only wait it out if they really want to be at the Codex, but sounds like a lot of bureaucratic overhead all the same.
There seems to be a lot less shitposting recently. In fact a lot less posting in general ;)

The approval thing works like a charm. People need 5 (I think) approved messages, then they can post normally. I'm online quite often and each time I see posts in the moderation queue, I click on it and check them out. Obvious troll posts get deleted, shit oneliners in GD get deleted, everything halfway decent gets approved. Sometimes approval goes as fast as 2 minutes, sometimes it takes longer (depending on whether a mod is online and checking or not), but it usually goes quite quickly and the posts in the moderation queue are usually only about 3 to 5. When they go above that, there usually are at least 5 or 6 troll posts by the latest andhaira alt among them which I delete on sight.

I'm under the impression that the system works quite good. Less fucktards around these days and more prestigious new members (also quite a lot at that - looks like an average rate of 3 "real" new people registering per day).
So in conclusion the approval system doesn't seem to discourage new members from joining our little freak show if they have something of substance to say. And if someone just came here for the lulz we don't even have to put up with them.
Win-win as far as I'm concerned and thumbs up from me for the approval system

It might be I don't recall things completely accurately, but it does seem to me that before this new system, there regularly were new members who came ahead and made decent contributions. Now I don't know if it's because I don't notice them, but it seems like it's mostly alts of new members who are the new accounts that post regularly.

I see a lot of new accounts registered, but I seldom see them post. Could it be that a lot of them post, realize their posts don't show up, tell themselves "Why would I cope with that?", and don't come back?

It does seem to me that when someone goes on a forum dedicated to RPG opinions that go against the grain, the last thing they want to see is babysitting.

I noticed that too, but if someone really wants to join it should be no obstacle.

I had just though it would be a lot of workload on the moderators, if it's really not as Jarlf Frank says, the better.

Actually, the people who make decent posts are over the approval limit very quickly, and it doesn't take long for posts to get approved (at least not while I am online, or some other mods who can approve posts).

Those who do shitposting get their crap deleted and you never get to see it anyway.

So chances are the people who register but never post are shitposters.

EDIT:

Workload? Nah. Approving or deleting posts is a matter of seconds, the interface for doing this is very easy to use and gives you a good overview without having to click on each post individually. Very simple affair. Just scan the posts through, approve everything that is not retarded, delete obvious troll posts, done.

Obviously, but when someone starts posting, they don't necessarily really want to join. I first posted because I wanted to comment on the Penny-Arcade guys being douchebag, but I never thought I would come to post regularly. Had the actual system been in place I would've probably just rolled my eyes and went somewhere else.

I just wonder if it's really worth to potentially curb on new quality membership for 3-4 troublemakers who can possibly be dealt with through other means.

You are a Machine!
But five posts is perhaps too much? It may be a bit hard for the decent new posters to come up with five relevant messages before anything happens, knowing they will still have 300.000 in front of them to reach that ultimate goal?
