Ryse has all the main ingredients to become a blockbuster success for the Xbox degenerates: Loud, violent, angry protagonist (Iraq veteran), protect your homeland from foreign hordes (terrorists), plus you get to learn history without using a single brain cell.

For some reason, they always start with a seemingly cool concept, and then over time degrade it into a Michael Bay shitfest.

Why?

Crytek is one of the most disappointing devs out there. They always create games that have potential to be great, but either fail to reach that potential with the sequels (Crysis series) or butcher it before the first game even releases (Ryse).

Warranted lulz from some quarters aside, that this utter unremarkable banality of a game is even being discussed as much as it is across the 'net proves that expensive games come with pre-built buzz. The marketers and news sites manufacture the hype that message board droogs repeat as gospel in an attempt to seem ahead of the curve; "i wuz ther from teh start wen his story was beein made!" It doesn't originate from any genuine interest or enthusiasm on the market's part.

Why does wife and child need to die in every game story? Does anyone really think that has EMOTIONAL IMPACT when it is repeated so often and we never meet them prior?

Would be a lot more interesting if she was 100% loyal and full of political ambition. A good woman to eagerly cheer on her husband as he slays man and beast in the open while she helps protect him by pulling strings in the shadows.

Nope. It's the first rule of drama in the modern day; protagonists aren't allowed to be happy anymore. Dead wife and kids are a quick and dirty way to make a 'conflicted' and 'stoic' main character.

It's especially trite considering death was everywhere in pre-industrial society and everybody had parents, children and loved ones that died in horrific ways. And people were forced to emotionally deal with it and accept it. Very few people lived to old age and died happy. Turning these characters into little emo bitches who can't function because of the pain they've been unfairly forced to feel is a modern invention.

Until they find a new, totally-not shoehorned love interest who makes them forget about their troubles, that is.

There's still hope that the latter half of Ryse will offer a bit more depth and variety over the hour-plus slice I played. But my first impression of Crytek's Roman action game has my excitement for the game rather muted. It may be pretty, but I would like to see a bit more substance out of such a combat-heavy action game.

Yep. Pretty but boring. That's the post-2007 Crytek.

But the ginormous Michael-Bay-complex must grow. Jobs depend on it.

QTEs with fail states are too hardcore. You can't make this up.

Fuck Crytek and their continuing decline. A shame, since they were decent at the time of Farcry and Crysis/Warhead.

On a semi-related note, Crytek's F2P shooter WARFACE is a steaming pile of shit. Say what you will about the yearly COD, but COD is miles better than this wanna-be Warface.
