There's a review of Sacred over at PlayXcess. They basically say while it's glitchy, it's worth buying.

You are not doomed to walk the lands alone, as Sacred allows you companions. They can be equipped with any weapons you possess, and have enough AI autonomy to act intelligently. For example, one companion was a priestess rescued from slavers. As I dismembered foes on her passage to liberty, a ‘boss’ character would have destroyed me were it not for the priestess healing me at exactly the right time. Another mission saw me escorting a prominent public figure to the hamlet of Silver Creek. As well as the noble, his bodyguard also joined the retinue and fought well and intelligently, until I let him take on a minotaur alone and get massacred. Better him than me.

Eh. I thought they were a little stupid in the demo, never knowing when to run away.

On the topic on NPCs, keep an eye out for ones that seem vaguely familiar, like Sgt Flavius the bridge guard in the demo.

Spotted so far:
Sarevokk the Successful
Joachim the Elder

And visit the scenic winter wonders of Icecreek Dale...

And, of course, don't pass over the now standard 'Humorous Tombstones', available wherever computer games are played.

I'm torn between amused and 'oh, my this is derivative'. (and a lot of it is deriative. The vampiress, for example, plays almost exactly like the Druid from the D2 expansion. Having to shift forms (annoyingly frequently), claw attacks that get progressively damaging as you hit, summoned critters- wolves or bats)

But, on the other hand, its a lot of fun. And its a lot bigger, and it feels more real- big towns (some are too, big, particularly when walking around them), people going about their lives, more quests by several orders of magnitude, the quests are often more interesting. The world feels a lot more real. While the story isn't the most original ever, it does have its moments. (But I ask you, what kind of idiot wizard has goblin slaves working on a summoning circle and conjures an uber-powerful demon without even checking it over?)

And, besides, how many other games allow you to sever the heads of your enemies with a well aimed arrow?

Yeah, I forgot to mention the joys of explosive arrows.

Splatter *and* Chunks.

And then there's Captain Quinn Dexter in the third town you reach - Port something or other. Funny thing he's a insane bad guy in a series of books by Peter F Hamilton.
