MHC should be banned from this thread for perpetually spamming it with filth and generally having a shit taste in games.

Expert difficulty and iron man don't mix well I think, at least not in the beginning.

Carry me through classic ironman, I said. Very first move I take on a terror mission later:

XCOM actually isn't too bad if you try really hard to forget it's based on the original.

Playing Impossible/Ironman mode. Here's what the briefing room looked like after about a day:

And here's what Impossible difficulty looks like on the tactical screen:

Bros is it true that there is no randomness in missions? Everything is preset, like those boxes and containers for every mission? Even aliens have no random placement? And you do about 30 (non random) missions, before being able to beat the game in the final mission?

Yeah there are no random maps, unfortunately. The game obviously won't have the lasting power of the original (not that many games do). Maps can be the same, but starting positions are not.

I don't know much about the story thus far. Someone playing on an easier difficulty can probably weigh in on that.

The game runs very well technically, btw, and on ironman the saves are frequent without slowing anything down.

You do see some gameplay mechanic issues as you play more, though. For example, it's not always clear what positions will have the upper hand on others. I once had a guy move to a sectoid's flank expecting a much better firing success rate only for it to actually go down. It is at times very stupid how often the enemy gets away with killing guys behind full cover vs. your guys total inability to kill enemies in the open. Breaking FOW is very cheesy in that enemies get a free-move as soon as you find them. I say it's cheesy because certain enemies will fan out after being discovered and, if all your soldiers are already moved, you will get promptly fucked six ways to Sunday. It's a huge leg-up. Imagine if you had the ability to change directions when discovering an enemy? Massive advantage. Not to mention that many times enemies will walk into your field of view and then be discovered and then take a free move. If you, the player, walk into enemies, you don't get such an option.

The "panic" mechanic is still there. Problem is, in the original "panic" usually just meant a soldier would throw his gun on the ground, stand there and do nothing, or if he fired, he would fire in random directions. But you can't actually target the environment anymore (stupid, I know). So if a panicking soldier decides to fire it means he has to target something and if he has to target something there's a very good chance it will be another soldier. It gets out of hand very quickly. Not to mention some enemies seem to instantly cause panic, like the thin man's gas attack. It's curious because from what I understand psionics are still in the game. But "panic" can already be so incredibly destructive to your squad that it seems like "mind control" would be of little difference.

Panic's less of an issue with leveled up guys. Raises will, helps with that. While you can't see which square will give you a flank and which won't, you can get a bit of an edge by hitting F1 while aiming a gun at an alien and it'll give you a breakdown on things impacting accuracy. For example I learned poison negatively impacts accuracy, so there's that. Didn't pay enough attention to see if it was the cloud itself or the poison that was reducing accuracy.
All this is from classic though, if you're doing impossible then god only knows.

Story's nothing special so far, I've learned of
an alien base
but haven't done anything about it yet due to limited resources. Really been enjoying strategic layer and the impact it can have on the tactical layer, and vice versa. The maps will probably be a bummer eventually but not yet. Unless you wanna go Skyway about convenient chest-high logs on the ground.

Is a spoiler necessary? There better damn be alien bases in an x-com game, so fuck spoilers. Unless y'all were working under the impression that they even tossed those out of the series.
There are terror missions where the aliens kill civilians.

I have heard there's no Cydonia in this. No idea what the final objective is, I would assume this alien base isn't it because I didn't have goddamn laser weapons by the time I discovered it. Now I have laser tech and can't make lasers because I don't have enough engineers. I've fucked myself.

Oh yeah. I took a screenshot of my first encounter with mutons. The one survivor was because I ran back to the skyranger and abandoned the mission because I didn't feel confident in her ability to kill two mutons by herself.

French Canadians getting themselves killed, tsk. Are all the missions labeled with randomly generated 'Operation X' titles?
Yep. You know you're in for a good time when you get something like Operation Unceasing Stroke.

Yeah pretty much.

I survived into the month of May on Impossible.

Was doing pretty good but I couldn't get satellites up fast enough and the whole world bailed.

Engineers are basically the most important asset in the game. Gonna have to keep that in mind for next game.

Also, fuck researching body armor. Just get the new weapons out as fast as possible.

Dunno what month I reached but I just bailed on my game. I have absolutely no squaddies or higher. nothing but rookies. I got absolutely rolled by a few thin men, panic went nuts. Gonna start a new campaign and do better this time!

Someone needs to teach these fantasy MMO devs how to not turn their screens into a chaotic shitstorm of skittles.

And the best part is that we can't disable a lot of those FX.
