Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, my team and I finally announced our project, Selaco, on Twitter. We have been working on this game for over two years now, and we're quite excited to finally share some of the things we have been doing with you!

What is Selaco?

Selaco is a standalone game that runs on GZDoom. It draws inspiration heavily from F.E.A.R in terms of action set pieces, while mixing traditional retro-FPS elements from QUAKE and DOOM, along with some more modern features. Together with professional artists who work in the industry, several having worked on successful throwback FPS games in the past, Selaco is a fully fleshed out world full of character, action, and mystery.

The story takes place during a violent invasion of Selaco, the underground facility that's home to the surviving refugees after the fall of Earth. You play as Dawn, an ACE Security Captain who, with her recent promotion and high level security clearances, is digging deep into the truth behind Selaco's murky history. Before she can finish her investigation, Selaco is rocked by explosions and armed invaders. While Selaco may take place in a large-scale conflict, much of it will be the personal story of Dawn, the center-piece of the game.

Selaco will be released on Steam in the future and no plans have been made for funding just yet. We are currently exploring our options, as our limited budget has made things take slightly longer than needed. A full list of credits will be published closer to release.

Features

  • A lengthy story-driven campaign
    • Selaco is a story-driven experience, and we don't say that lightly. A dedicated writer (@kknot5889 here on Doomworld) has been brought on board to assist with creating an engaging and believable sci-fi story and world.
  • Intense action-set pieces
    • Turn the entire world into confetti with the destructive power of your weapons. Every single bullet will react properly with any materials or objects you hit. Our artists have created many different variations for each (voxel)object to ensure that the aftermath of each encounter is palpable. That once lavish office space now nothing but a pile of rubble with broken paintings, smashed tables, screen, chairs, smoke, and chunks of debris.
  • Custom AI
    • With our FEAR influence, writing proper AI was a goal from the get go. The enemy is fully aware of each other's presence and works together to take you down. They will keep their distance if you apply constant pressure on them, will rush you if you hide or run out of bullets, toss grenades if you use the same cover for too long, and much more. Hundreds of custom lines have been written and acted out, providing hints to the player about their current plans and tactics.
  • Full soundtrack
    • Selaco is accompanied by a full length original soundtrack composed by an experienced musician who has worked on many games in the past. And no, it's not Andrew Hulshult.
  • Professional voice-acting.
    • To help immerse players in the story and atmosphere of Selaco, professional voice actors have been brought on board. Dawn will be voiced by the incredibly talented Melissa Medina, with other casting choices revealed at a later date.
  • Extra Gamemodes
    • Completing levels allows you to replay that level in Incursion Mode, an expanded version of that map where your skills will be tested against a near endless onslaught of enemies. Win incursion maps to gain bonuses to aid you throughout the campaign. New exclusive Incursion Levels and new mutators will also be unlocked as the campaign progresses.

SCREENSHOTS, ARTWORK & VIDEO

Keep in mind that some placeholder textures are present in these screenshots. These have since been replaced. We will continue to post new screenshots to this page as we continue.

There's still much more work to be done on Selaco, and we'll document our progress both here and on Twitter @PlaySelaco. So keep an eye out and thanks for checking out Selaco!

Why even make something on the Doom engine if you are going to make it so thoroughly ugly and modern looking. Oh right so they can simply say it's made on the Doom engine for "retro cred." Remember when people used to make those "If Doom/Quake were made today!" videos, and they were parodies to be laughed at. Now games that look exactly like that are celebrated as some sort of return to form for the FPS genre.

That is a good question, one reason might be because of existing GZDoom knowledge and Doom Builder is quite easy to work with.

Though this doesn't really apply to this game as it looks good IMO. It isn't like it'd look any better if they used Unity or Unreal with the same assets, just a bit more shiny, a lot heavier and much harder to mod and port to other systems (especially without the dev's involvement since GZDoom is open source).

It's extremely easy to map and script for Doom - (Gz)doom builder is easily one of the most accessible and well documented mapping tools around. Plus the people starting these projects tend to have loads of prior experience with Doom mapping/modding without necessarily having any gamedev/programing background outside it. It's as simple as that.

:hmmm:
Soo, they want to sell this blatant cashgrab mod? Starred by a woman, but of course to boot. I suppose there won't be a fucked-up rape sequence/rape implication and other shit like FEAR, naturally.

At least Sharpshooter 3D had the janky "Russianess" to distinguish itself.

If you want something closer to FEAR you can check Trepang2 but honestly I don't see nothing wrong with the aesthetics. I'm curious about the combat, I don't know how far you can go with the AI considering the engine. Of course the big problem here is the lack of physics, which made FEAR gunplay really satisfactory.

Cool Doom mod, where can I download it?

Ahhh, it's paid?

Why should I even bother, then?

Shitposting aside, I'm frankly amazed that people now start crying if there's a woman protagonist (I understand that women in real life can cause collapses in blind-hot rage because reasons, but even in games now? You guys should play Demonsteele, it's an anime shitposting mod for Doom with the greatest gameplay I can think of) but there's very little to judge the game from. The main problem is that what they're selling is already giving me doubts of TYPICAL MODDER PRIORITIES

- DEEP LORE
- Graphics
- Soundtrack
- Voice acting?
- AI in a GZDoom project

It's backwards to what a man should expect in a Doom engine mod.

It's a bloody FPS and you'll surely be able to mute the protagonist and skip/ignore the story stuff. So it matters little for you. It is, however, useful signaling for them that will win them some extra sympathies from journos and industry folk plus the gamers tend to be all about playing as waifus. And her design tries to cover both the action hero and appealingly girlish/feminine checkboxes.

That was some good shit for sure. Playing it back in the day probably sped up my mouse's retirement quite a bit.

TerminusEst may be an insufferable faggot (with some great taste in FPS) and I was thoroughly underwhelmed by High Noon Drifter, but despite being complete cancer visually (seriously, badly drawn schoolgirls fighting metal demons? Seriously?) Demonsteele has great ideas mechanically (lack of hitscanners married with extremely low "HPs" with invuln frames and heavy-skill based weaponry), it's a pity he ended up too much into the meme Doom community instead of refining his work.

But hey, he does it for fun and free.

You really sure about that? Duke Nukem Forever says hi.

Agreed with serving as virtue-signaling, never said the opposite. However, as for being appealing, that can change. See nu-Bombshell's bland design for an example. Granted, it is better than the one they used in the Bombshell game, but still weak, considering it is set in the Duke Nukem setting.

Plus hating Brutal Doom and Sarge to the point of sabotaging his own mods whenever something related to the former, even if it's a mod which only uses a bit of the code, is detected by his WADs.

You a homo or something?

No, you don't understand. Women. The snakes in our midst! The horror of having a woman as a protagonist, that gives unbearable pain!

Yeah, ignore the other pointed out issues like clunky gameplay, sure.

Also, people, it's Doomworld. It's a weird place with a carebear attitude, and with "special posters" on par with the Codex. Their first thread on Selaco did however point out that they tried to sell it as a "boomer shooter" (they rightfully hate the term) and that the gameplay shown is limited.

Also Doom3 influences? Worrying. We'll see what happens. After Ion Fury, judge the game, not the 'tism.

How the fuck are you runnig that on the Doom Engine?

Can't have male protags anymore. HAS to be a wahmen, huh?

You a homo or something?

As long as she has big tits and ass. Sadly that appears not to be the case. And lol, they ripped Doom 3 sound effects.

The main character's overall cute design, seems to imply they're trying more to please the body pillow crowd
Which is a smart move from the devs considering that if they went for the "semen demon" design there would've certaintly had some sort Twitter/TrannyERA shitstorm
Plus the "kawaii" aesthetic is nowadays much more profitable than playboy models

Don't worry though
There's always Rule 34...

Animu wombym lmao fuck off already.

Get on with the times old man
