So after decades of faffing about, I can say nothing beats having a generational PC built with video + sound card, operating system and CPU tailored to the game.
GOG is nice (Syndicate Wars will run, but has framerate issues), virtual software can work (Original FF7 with modded graphics) but the real key thing is to just run your old games on old PCs.
I'm currently cheating with Win7 running on a 512mb radeon card. The drivers for the card only run on WinXP but the default drivers Win7 installs for the card still allow BG1 to run flawlessly. No flickering cursor, slowdown on inventory, framerate drop on area spells, graphical glitches, etc. The EE versions of BG were touted as built for modern systems, and I'm getting a better silky smooth experience with this over that pile of garbage.
My two cents: you want to carry on playing old RPGs well into the future - get a backup PC or two built for purpose.
