Atlus has officially announced that its next Shin Megami Tensei game, which was first announced for Switch in January, is Shin Megami Tensei V.

The game is set in modern day Tokyo. The teaser trailer shows two uniform-wearing high school students walking inside a train station. Then, the corpses of demons in the city’s tunnels. After that, the students are surrounded by demons in a desertified Tokyo. The mysterious words “Shekinah Glory” and “Daath” appear on the screen.

A release date was not announced.

Shin Megami Tensei V will be a game that sympathizes with the times
SMTV-Fami-Interview_10-24-17-600x371.jpg

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has the first interview on Shin Megami Tensei V following its formal announcement for Switch yesterday.

Development on Shin Megami Tensei V is being led by ‎Kazuyuki Yamai, who directed both Shin Megami Tensei IV and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Maniax.

Get the tidbits below.

  • The first Shin Megami Tensei title was released in October, 25 years ago. We wanted to tell everyone that the Shin Megami Tensei series will continue, so we used this timing to make the announcement.
  • One of the directions we are taking with Shin Megami Tensei V is to reexamine the “characteristics of the era.” There are surely many people frustrated by troubles both at home and abroad, such as anxiety about finding a job and getting old, or terrorists and nuclear weapons. I want to make a Shin Megami Tensei game that can sympathize with such an era. That is our challenge.
  • The keywords “Shekinah Glory,” which appeared in the trailer, literally translate to “miracle of God.” When you actually play it and have these keywords in your head, I think you will be able to feel their true meaning.
  • Shinagawa Station is one spot where modern day Tokyo is well represented. Of course, it is also involved in the story.
  • This is the first time Atlus is using Unreal Engine 4. The game development environment has changed dramatically, and you can check what you made immediately on the game screen, allowing us to cut down on a lot of time working over ideas and trial-and-error. I’m really grateful to have been introduced to it.
  • Nintendo Switch is a lovely platform where you can play high-definition quality games and freely take the hardware from place to place.
    • According to Ryokutya2089, the reason Atlus chose to make Shin Megami Tensei V for Switch is because it plays high-definition quality games and you can freely take it on the go. Yamai said he wants to see users play the game in ways such as enjoying the story on their TV, and enjoying side activities such as demon fusion while in bed.
  • Classic elements like demon fusion will of course be included. We are also considering new elements.
  • Since this is the first Shin Megami Tensei game on a home console in a long time, I want to deliver a hybrid game that combines the profound appeal of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and the popular training elements of Shin Megami Tensei IV and the like.
  • At this point, we can’t even say it’s “Coming Soon!” yet, so please wait a little while longer.
Thanks, Famitsu and Hachima Kikou.

I am very happy it's coming on a home console, whatever console it is, I haven't got any of the last generation ones yet anyway, and since Dragon Quest 11 is coming on the Switch too (Octopath Traveller looks awesome too) then I'll very probably buy one.

I might end up with a Swtich, too. We'll see in a few years. Xenoblade 2, Octopath, Mario x Rabbids, SMTV, DQ11, Zelda. There are a few games that I would like to play.

As per usual with this series the soundscape and the ambiance it creates is superb. Also interesting to hear how it will (hopefully) incorporate some elements from Nocturne, with the tone and setting seemingly being indicators of this. I also find the idea of what might be a more "optimistic" ("miracle of God", capturing and tackling present day issues) theme potentially intriguing, though hopefully they won't stray too far from the darker tone the mainline series is known for. The Switch is becoming more and more tantalizing the more RPGs are announced.

Wow, unexpected. I'm on limited connection so can't see images -- did Kaneko return? IV felt completely off without him.

Might pick a Switch after Nintendo releases a handful of revisions.

Wow, Nintendo actually getting a major exclusive? This is pretty shocking.

After Breath of the Wild was so popular, I might have to get a Switch.

We won't know until we see the main characters from the front. The faces and eyes of his characters tend to stick out. But really, I think the dude is retiring and wants to pass the torch, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I don't feel very confident about it, I find that Atlus has been trending downward for a long while. I mean, it's still better than your average piece of shit that passes off as a game, but they progressively dumbed down SMT, by reducing the difficulty, reducing the complexity and design of the levels (it used to be a Wizardry clone with demons with some clever design, no more), by adding useless and annoying side quests that waste your time, adding backtracking, adding obnoxious preaching (it started with Strange Journey with all this "you humans are worse than us because you neglect the earth" repeated at nauseam), adding tons of gay shit lifted from Persona, using the same gay and uninteresting character designs from the Persona character designer... it goes on and on and on.

Basically it used to be an excuse to wow you with cool monster designs, and cheesy references from Western sci-fi movies (SMT I and II are full of this stuff especially), but they progressively gayified it with generic anime garbage.

You don't understand that most of the money these small Japanese companies make isn't even about selling the game, it's about selling a special edition, figurines and other derived plastic products that have very high margins. That is why most Japanese developers don't care about the Steam market.

Kinda. It's one of the reasons why they are so obsessed with mascot characters. They want an iconic character that can be franchised off.

Anyway, I hope the next Switch model will be out by the time SMT5 comes out. I want a Switch but I'm wary of investing in the current one since it's supposed to have a lot of design flaws.

Steam is not Japanese, Atlus pure Japanese games would be tainted by it's filthy gaijiness.

Considering the Nihonese have turned up their noses at playing any sort of video game that isn't a microtransaction based vehicle for distributing child pornography on Iphone, I don't see why they can't do what literally every other developer in Japan has done and stopped making PS4 exclusive games that get released in foreign markets 12 months after release, and start making international games.

Switch is an exception because if you are using the platform and controls correctly it's awkward to port, but still.

I never played SMTIV because of the digital only release in Europe. Never bothered with the sequel.

SMT IV apocalypse is a great game from a gameplay perspective. Mechanically polished megaten mechanics to a great degree, probably better than in Nocturne, although Nocturne is better game overall. one of the greatest RPGs ever made and a first walkthrough uncanny experience, I remember entering Amala Network with just a few lame Demons, because I didn't think I woluld be stuck for so long without being able to fuse new ones. Realizing I would have to push forward with limited resources was memorable.

SMT IV apocalypse is great if you want to power-game a better tuned system, Nocturne is an unforgetable survival dungeon crawling experience with that atmosphere, artwork and dungeons.

In apocalypse some characters are questionable, but I didn't find them "so annoying". It was a clear step up from SMT IV. Persona 5 was fine too, if you are a Persona fan, so I don't see ATLUS decline.

I'm excited. We are going to have a mainline SMT with decent budget, that's a thing to celebrate. Better graphics, no hardware limitations crippling dungeon design...

Best Japan gaming news in a while.

Atlus usually only shows its games when they are basically ready and a few months from release in Japan, this is nothing new.
