Whether Rance is an RPG - or even a good game - or not, is completely irrelevant.

The moment you take the artwork out of the game and put them on a website you lose all connection to the game. Now it is anime artwork - nothing more, nothing less.

Most people will come onto this site and look at the avatars and think "This is anime art" followed by either "That looks like shit, why does the Prestigious Codex have avatars that look like that?" (perfectly reasonable) or "I like watching anime therefore I might like to use these here" (absolutely the wrong attitude in the Codex). As you can surely see from such a situation, Rance itself will rarely come into this consideration (truly, even most Codexers would not have heard anything of Rance before coming here), and that should be enough to show you the effect of the separation of the art from the game. It is very simple.

The artwork is clearly out of place, and the simple fact that many people immediately react with "ugh that looks like fucking crap" should be enough to tell you that there is something going on here. People can't see what kind of a game it belongs to unless they already know, and that is because all they can see is plain old crappy anime artwork. Artwork that is completely out of place. Artwork that pays no heed to its quality in the eyes of the members. Artwork that by itself is almost universally regarded as bad.

Seeing the sympathisers come up with ridiculous self-righteous arguments like "we paid money, therefore are better than you" or "we are the most literate on this site therefore we are right on this issue", shows how the emotionality from your side of the argument is preventing you from seeing what this discussion is about.

You need to look at the avatars in isolation of what they are. There is no game connected to them. You cannot click on them and play Rance. They are artwork.

And they are judged solely by that fact. Now tell me if you like them.

wait, are you talking about the rance avatars or those crappy low-poly anachronox or deus-ex avatars, that pixelated fugly arcanum and fallout ingame shit, which is especially bad in the case of arcanum, the shitty and badly edited avernum 3 avatars, the wannabe anime stuff from battle for wesnoth, that civ3 poser crap with retarded facial expressions, all those bland and unrecognizable daggerfal portraits, the fucking sims bubbles (i mean, seriously, wtf..), the beyond retarded warhammer 40k and fantasy shit, or all those countless others crappy and stupid avatars we have that have no merit other than reminding you of the games they are from?

On the bull about people playing the game for the porn, negatory. From the get-go, porn came up, finger was on the skip button. Any time I've booted the game up, it was because the gameplay is actually good and it has a high replay value.

The thread was originally checked out thinking "Oh, another porn game LP, this should get a laugh or two" but after a bit, I decided to actually try out the game and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The music sounds nice, the characters can be worth a laugh or can be good at times, high replay value with good C&C, the combat can be challenging, so on and so forth.

People just getting butthurt over the art style, which isn't even that horrible most of the time. My picture's relatively plain, hence why I picked it instead of one of the neon haired freak characters, since this is one of the better looking avatars I could pick out. If people are really gonna cry that much over some "animu" pictures though, toss up some of those Nobunaga's Ambition pictures and I'll flip to one of them or something.

We have avatars. Being the RPG Codex, with an emphasis on, you know, tranny porn RPG's, the avatars are, you know, from RPG's. So, whether the game that the avatars come from is an RPG is... kinda not irrelevant.

I am pretty aware that nothing is going to be done about the avatars, but I wasn't expecting anything to be done.
