No, I don't really think that anyone knows why a thread gets locked after about 200-250 posts..
This was the policy with beth's older forums. We are talking pre and post Morrowind release when the system they had was "inadequate", iirc, to handle all the new volume because of the game's popularity. After beth upgraded the system and created the present elderscrolls forums the old policy was kept, not because it could not handle it but to keep the posts more "managable". I think.
