Just got a 'daywalker' achievement for beating the ginger hallway monitor boss and his minions as a character with freckles. I love this game.

I don't get what's the problem there? It's a decent joke.

Maybe I'm seeing it out of context but my vision was of seeing a company who very well should be making "hardcore RPG games" forced into putting out schlock like this where a cartoon character commends the player for not being a mouth-breathing powergamer. Seems, y'know, sad.

You're forgetting that Cartman is a retard. What he says probably does not match what the authors believe.

Just finished the game after about 12 hours, it was really fun, and only encountered one bug which made me have to restart the process.
Don't know if it's worth $60 because of the length and limited replayability though.

Full disclosure: I don't even watch South Park.

[class selection screen - Warrior, Mage, Rogue, Jew]

TL;DR: No class restricted items. Not super difficult on the hardest setting. Funny in exactly the way you expect South Park to be.

I've been playing it and I really like it. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and I've only died maybe twice. There was a pretty fun boss fight where the boss kept regenerating big chunks of life. I could have used gameplay mechanics to prevent that, but I was stupid and just chipped away at him for ten minutes.

So far I really haven't needed consumables because it hasn't been hard enough. Well, I do use health potions a lot... and cure potions occasionally. None of the fancier consumables, though. It would be harder if there were no tips about combat mechanics, but then you'd be pissed off trying to figure out how to deal with every different situation.

The humor is South Park. I literally feel like I'm playing the show. If you like the show you will like the humor in this game.

Classes seem to matter only slightly. Depending on which class you choose sets your special abilities for the game. You unlock more powerful versions as you level up. However, every class can use any weapon. I'm playing as a mage and I shoot projectile weapons and attack with a melee weapon and wear whatever armor I feel like wearing. That is the one disappointing thing for me. Though, I suppose they don't want to frustrate players that don't like class restrictions.

Overall, any shortcoming is made up for with the humor. If you don't like the humor you probably shouldn't bother.

Just finished it after 23 hrs of gameplay. Had a blast.

0 bugs encountered (PC). Hardcore difficulty.

Combat is simplistic but I've seen far worse -- but as you reach max level, there's really only 1 set of equipment that you use. Would've loved to see more variety and restrictions on classes -- playing the Jew is supposed to be about berserking as you take more damage, but it's easier to just get the biggest sword and best armor and obliterate everything in your way.

It's fucking hilarious and I paid full price because I support Obsidian taking risks.

I do very much support Obsidian experimenting more with mixing RPG and adventure like elements. More spy'i adventure stuff was what Alpha Protocol was lacking (Apart from the badly balanced combat)

:hmmm:
Didn't you know, slam dunking with a succesful franchising is very risky, I mean, they could have gone full cinematic QTEs but instead still tried to make an RPG, no, wait, it was the creators or the franchise that wamted to make a JRPG, sorry, my bad.

Licensed games often don't do well and are generally looked down upon unless they have the word Arkham in their name. There was certainly no guarantee that an RPG, which is a niche genre to begin with, would do well married to South Park, which has its fans but isn't exactly mainstream. It was entirely possible that this game would only appeal to a niche of a niche, which would probably have been the case if Obsidian went full-on hardcore RPG instead of the simple JRPG system they ended up with.

I don't think RPGs are niche has been true for a long time. Skyrim has 20 million sales, Final Fantasy sells 4-5 million whenever it doesn't suck (sometimes even when it does).

Licensed games might be looked down upon, but they clearly sell or publishers wouldn't be paying for the licenses.

That really depends on the kind of RPG. I think people view Skyrim as a messing around/hiking simulator or at least an action game first and foremost rather than an RPG. And an RPG with turn-based combat (that isn't styled after a jRPG) is most certainly niche.

Though in this case, the South Park creators probably pushed for the combat system since they are big fans of jRPG's. Obsidian probably made the right call in keeping it simple, given the target audience. But calling this game a risk is pretty silly, yeah.

Yeah, the risk-taking would have been implementing Hard Choices, sprawling character development and challenging combat. But their lesson from DS3, right or wrong, is that you can't try hard to mix things together when they don't mix, or your audience just hates you.

And it's not really Obsidian carrying the risk even if the game doesn't sell well.

When they were offered the job, I doubt they were thinking "man, this is too risky, maybe we should do something safer". If anything the direct contact to the SP guys ensured that the project will be seen through with almost certainty and not dropped during production.

The game is fun and has me smiling and laughing outloud all the time. This is definetly a game for fans as most non fans won't find much in the simple combat or the setting, and those who don't understand or like the humor they might find the game ofensive but I am more than happy with my purchase and it is worth the $60 easily; all the references to old episodes like the koon and finding awesome-o in cartman's closet are so much fun for a fan like me, plus hanging around with Butters (my fave) for a big chunk of the game has been a blast
I found 1 or 2 bugs and sounds like someone forgot to play those faggots at kotaku

Am I the only one who didn't enjoy this game at all?

Majority of the jokes were a lot worse than in the actual show and gameplay wasn't fun either.

Or are you guys just pretending to like it because it was made by Obsidian?

I kinda didn't like it, I did not watch the show so that might be the reason.

But I am really enjoying watching an LP of it. Guy seems to be a fan of South Park the show so that might also be the reason.

not really, but you might get that impression because there is next to no satire in the game, much less any that wasn't present in the show already, which is a damn shame.
