Just checked some info, apparently they are planning to make the base game campaign playable in the soul harvest, upgrade it with all the new improvement from the expansion.

Guess I'll wait for it to happen before playing it then.

How's the backtracking in this game? I found it unbearable in 1.

Do you need any mods/patches for SF1&2?

Skills and UI, story is cooler. Probably performance a bit.

Not really, but I should probably warn you that the SF2 Anniversary Edition on Steam has some major bugs (and is missing some content if I'm not mistaken).

How long is the soul harvest campaign? I'm 5 hours in and only get my third companion, the dwarf lady. And the story feels like just out of prologue.

But the steam page claims it to be a 20 hours long story.

Also I found out that press alt slow the game to let you use skills, which makes it 10 times more enjoyable.

Took me ~30 hours for a reasonably completionist (read all dialogues, do all quests) run.

Original SF 3 took ~50 hours but that includes some replays because I started it on Hard and since difficulty affects mostly RTS part, I wasted some time to learn it properly (and ditch base-building altogether).

Did the merchant's gold limit ever reset? At current rate I would soon have to leave the capital to sell my junk because every merchant there is broke.

Went ahead and got Soul Harvest on sale here for $10. After I found out they're actually porting the original campaign into Soul Harvest and that, to my understanding, you don't need to own the original to get it when they release that update, I decided to go for it. Now that's a pretty damn solid move on their part. My mouse cursor has been hovering over the buy button for Spellforce III for years now, and I'm excited to try it out. Now I need to decide if I want to go ahead and play Soul Harvest now, or wait until the original campaign gets implemented and play that first.

Unless Soul Harvest has a menu theme to top the original, you might as well play the first one.

They are connected, play the original campaign first. Tho i did prefer old UI over the soul harvest one,the RPG elements were better in my opinion.

One thing I really like in this game is that the mercenaries you create actually talks during your conversation with other npcs, and make comments when you go to certain area. They even have banter with companions talking about them being mercenaries.

Normally in games like this I prefer to use companions instead of created mercenaries because they feel just not there other than in the combat. But here I actually feel like I hired a mercenary instead of just created someone out of thin air.

Got through the first real RPG/RTS mission of the original campaign, and I have to say that the RTS part of it was total and utter bullshit. As soon as you get your base of operations set up, waves of swarms of elves start attacking left and right. The rest of the map I enjoyed, but ended up having to put off building anything and just go explore the entire map with my heroes, eventually busting into the back gate of the town the elves were defending. Just feels very strange. Don't get me wrong, I still had fun, but if the rest of the original campaign is going to play out like this, I'd probably just rather wait for it to be ported into Soul Harvest.

Alienman, I know this rubbed you the wrong way in particular. Do you feel these issues will be addressed when the OC is ported into Soul Harvest. You've played through both and said that the RTS stuff in the expansion bothered you way less. Did they completely alter the way they managed the enemy armies/AI in it?

From what I remember it was a little less in Soul Harvest, but overall it plays out the same way. You have to be really quick to build defenses, or just head out early on the map with your heroes before the enemy snowballs, taking out a base or two. Though in Soul Harvest they made it easier, dumping the resources linking (which I liked in the original game. Thought it was a cool feature and missed it).

I played on hard in both games.

Ah, cool. Sounds like I might as well carry on with the original campaign if that's the case. There's enough fun stuff in the game to make this a fairly minor problem for me. Just seems like a bizarre design decision though.

I noticed that a lot of people have the same complain about the strategy part. I do find it strange since i find it pretty easy, the trick is to focus on offensive/harassment with your heroes while expanding with your base. The best deal is to explore the map with your heroes and threat it as RPG. Most maps could be finished even without doing any base building. Also in most cases the AI is frozen till you advance to the base building part,so you could even kill it off and skip the strategy part.

The hallmark of this entire series is you can skip half the intended gameplay and it's better. That's why you have disgusting missions like the one in 1 where I casually had going on in the background while doing other stuff so I can force myself to finish it. The structure of the mission forbids you from not engaging with the RTS part. You have to defend 4 points on the map at the same time.

Have you finished the entire Spellforce 1? If so, it's the Firefangs map in the first expansion, you have to "capture" and defend 4 flames to awaken a fire elemental or some such nonsense.
