Regarding those two comparison shots.. The first shot appears to be using post processing, looks almost like that Photoshop filter accented edges. My guess is they removed it to reduce the requirements for the casual gamer target market. Maybe there will be an option to enable the post effects in the final?

Not that I've followed the game well enough to know. To be honest, "creature creator" software have been available for commercial 3D packages for nearly a decade, excuse me for not being excited that they've packaged one into a (mini-)game.

As long as people using such creatures don't act abusive, I don't think it would be a problem. If a child doesn't grow up alien to human anatomy, (s)he is less likely to be disturbed by seeing a jumping penis.

Besides, you need to make a pretty weak creature to achieve penis form. Online natural selection (assuming there is one) would weed you out

Apparently there's no metadata attached, so I'd guess they're using the least significant bits of all four color channels. That would explain why the background isn't uniform black, but a seemingly random color with either 0 or 1 values on all channels.
To illustrate, the following picture, with the brightness and contrast jacked all the way up, and the alpha channel removed...

So the information is hidden in the details invisible to the human eye. Quite clever.
