Search is mainly used for finding your own posts.
And I hope the 400 USD are for the whole network and not only the Dex.
Anyway, the Codex outlived its time. Let it die gracefully.

400 000 visits? Who ARE all these people? There's a couple hundred active forumers at max.

I blame the Bioware fans.

Remember those threads on the bioboards linking to or talking about the 'dex? That may be part of the problem.

Also I don't like the idea of restricting viewing to members/paying members. It would result in very little new blood, and eventually the death of the forum once the older members lleft/commited suicide (like Glyphwright did may the Maker watch over him).

possible not-too-retarded things to counter some unnecessary load:

1) higher moderation in the sense that multiple threads on the same subject get locked, not cracking down on trolls and shit but just cut down on inane threads in the Gaming sections.

2) introduce a minimum character per post system. this would reduce 1-word posting from retards like me.

I will totally donate again by the way, just gotta activate my new credit card and pay some bills first :p

Forcing registration to view GD is a pretty good way to reduce traffic without being obnoxious.

Perhaps you could get more ads for games with adult content like Rance? Unless you are trying to avoid that, although trying to make RPGCodex more wholesome seems a fruitless exercise.

GD delenda est.

In any case, it is doubtful any significant portion of the biowhores that most likely are the reason for this will keep browsing the Codex for too long. I don't think anything should be done about it actually. In time traffic will return to previous, lower levels.

Although it still could go r00fles. Hope not, but we'll see.

Making GD visible/accessible only to registered users isn't such a bad idea, regardless of the 'dex having these problems. Not only would it reduce load somewhat, but also shove the trash under the bed, so that casual visitors wouldn't wet themselves as quickly.
Would make Codex kind of a multiheaded trap, though.

Why do I sense irony?

Is it because the RPG Codex is on the verge of selling out to keep running?

Just as some game companies(bioshit) sell out to keep making (horrible)games?

FUCK LYFE! :x

Yeah, I only used the Search function when I needed to find the URL for an LP post. Could you make the "Subject:" line into a URL for the specific post?

This is actually a very clever DDoS attack orchestrated by Bethesda and Bioware. They are working together to slowly overload the servers to avoid suspicion.

The site needs moar ads. Something like those text google ads. Integrate them into the forum as well. Something to ponder at least.

Holy shit. I guess BiowareSocial is really pounding us, eh?

Hopefully the traffic will subside soon. If it doesn't... well, I'd be all for making some boards (Hosted RPG forums, Codex Playground, Codex Workshop, Site Feedback, Retardo Land and General Discussion maybe) only open to registered users. Trimming GD might be a good idea, too. Crack down on the shitty spam and move some threads to the Public Library (The TITS Crowd could go in there, right?).

Do the amazon links at the top bring in much?

It seems a lot of people don't notice them, though I have clicked through them before when I wanted to buy something.
Amazon referrals across all the sites on our little network (not just Codex) have brought in less than $50 to date this year. So it's safe to say that people aren't using them much.
I think more people would be willing to donate if you offered a preferred account that disabled all ads.

I also don't see a problem with the previous suggestion someone made of requiring you to be logged in to read general discussion.

Finally, this site is nowhere near safe for work anyway, so if you want to put some free titties in those banners I don't think anyone would care. Make them tranny tits for that special codex flavor.

Damn, I wonder what it is that's caused such a recent increase. Somehow it being just Bioware fans doesn't seem likely. Anyway, as for solutions, I'm more in favor of punishing visitors as opposed to registered members. Yes, of course I'm baised here, but it seems fair since we contribute to the site, versus some random asshole. Hiding away certain forums like GD would probably be a good solution if it helps. It would also mean less people joining for the lulz.

That would encourage longer threads, which DU said is a big problem.

Terrible idea.

I checked some online site worth calculators:

Worth $400k ?
Yeah, they're full of lies. Trust me when I say there's no-one willing to buy the Codex for $400k. Maybe more like $40k and for that it's not worth selling it anyway.

From past experience, it won't. Codex has only been getting busier and busier. We are the site you go to complain about mainstream titles without getting banned and seeing as a guy got banned at BioWare forums for saying DA2 was shit... God only help us if Skyrim turns out to be a giant piece of crap.

So, you're blocking ads, aren't you J1M?

So, DU, what do you think of limiting guests access to the subforums? Maybe you could do something like SA and throw some extra ads at them too. No popups or shit like that, though. That would just scare people away.

As for putting porn ads on the site: you best be joking, nigger.

I'm frankly amazed at how much traffic gets. In all my years of lurking here I've never realized how many angry, bitter RPG lovers there must be out there.

I shall do my patriotic duty and unblock adds from this site.

Somewhere damp and cold.
I like the idea of blocking some forums unless you login. Also what if you had a shitload more ads for anyone not logged in?

What about porno ads in the tits thread?
