Heh, Ascendancy. I remember that the game had a completely lacking AI that basically did all of jack shit. Also, you could build a spaceship with 100% damage resistance that could still move and was armed, so there was no way the AI could actually kill it.

I was referring to the non-standard designs of the races as being something that still stands out. As for the game, the lacking difficulty is why it really should have had that promised sequel. Most everything else was pretty much great, so making it so that the AI posed a credible threat was all that was really needed.

Stellaris Dev Diary #25 - Reverse Engineering and Unique Technologies

Greetings scavengers and fellow interstellar gangsters!
  1. Today I will be talking about debris and reverse-engineering. Whenever you defeat hostile creatures or ships in Stellaris, there is a possibility that they leave some debris behind. By studying the debris you may gain new insights into technologies unfamiliar to you.

    Not long after reaching for the stars, our fledgling empire encountered some strange creatures. In order to further study these creatures our fleet began to carefully probe them with a modest volley of nuclear missiles. After our fleet finished its “pilot study”, our researchers on our science ship could begin to collecting more data by studying the debris.

    By studying the data collected from the remains, our science ship can give us insight into how these creatures stay alive in the void of space. These particular creatures manage to stay alive due to their regenerative skin. If we continue to study how this tissue is composed, we may in the future be able to apply the technology of regenerative hull tissue to our own ships.

    Sometimes a technology might not yet be a valid research option for your empire. In such cases, reverse-engineering the debris of technologically superior spacecraft might yield you the possibility to research things that would otherwise be beyond your understanding.

    In addition, some technologies in Stellaris cannot at all be researched by normal means, but must rather be discovered in other ways.

If xeno purging reaches levels worthy of the Immortal Emperor, I might consider a purchase, but so far it's been mostly an unimaginative feature parade that - given recent Paradox history - almost guarantees a generic and lackluster end result. So I remain skeptical.

i kept hearing "stellaris" as "delores" o_O and damn, this is the first true real time, i don't like it at all, fine tuning pause has become even more important than before.

Nice to see the game in action. Looks like good fun, though it is clear we'll need mods for the much needed genocide and orbital bombardment stuff*. And yeah, I also kept hearing him say 'Delores.' Game looks like it could be massive. Hope they ship it with enough content to keep it interesting until they start releasing all the inevitable dlc.

And I do hope they won't make the same mistake with dlc that they did with CK2. Mindlessly expanding did not make for a better game there. Anyway, looking forward to release an ancient space horror through researching some eldritch artifact. Vernor Vinge as well as Lovecraft demand it.
