And your point is? I would love a whole galaxy to duke it out with all the possible enemies. If they were smart they would make it like Endless Legend and give each faction slightly different mechanics based on their lore.
And have proper space and ground combat (or at least cool animations so we can enjoy it :D)

Because in a distant future, there is only war.

Only war, not exploration or expansion or whatnot. Just - fucking - war.
And war can be made a bigger part of the gameplay. Like there is no science or diplomacy or economy victory. You can only conquer everything or have everyone declare you their master.

You could still expand from your starting location and fight for each planet because none of them are free. Exploration would be to find out about your enemy locations.
And diplomacy can also be used with some factions (humans, eldars and such), being able to form war pacts or short term treaties could work. Of course some factions like Tyranids or Necrons are not interested in any kind of diplomacy and it could be made that some factions cannot have any diplomacy between each other (humans vs chaos)

Exploration would be to find out about your enemy locations.

So Starcraft 2 has exploration then. And every rts with a fog of war and random starting locations for that matter. :smug:

Though I get what you mean, I think the setting really doesn't fit the 4X genre. It'd just feel weird managing planets as the imperium, I mean who gives a fuck, let's send the guard and burn 'em all already.

You manage the planet/system so you can raise more guards there and burn the heretic's planets.

And you manage the base in any rts in order to do exactly the same thing, again I don't get what the 4X formula would bring to that.

You don't know much about WH do you?
Enough. True I didn't read any sourcebooks or play the tabletop game but I did't play a couple of computer games based on that setting.

People talk about WH40k all the time everywhere, did anyone ever try to make a WH40k 4x game?

WH40K would fit 4X

Pretty much 0 diplomacy, no research, very limited exploration, every faction starts with a lot of worlds which can be spread out thin and far. And it just simply would feel WRONG.

Instead, just make a large-scale strategy that takes advantage of the setting, not works against it. A Total War game set in space is what you should be looking at.

Same could be said of Birth of the Federation game but it worked.

No it couldn't. FFS you already said you don't know much about the setting, but you keep hammering your dumb idea. No diplomacy, because dealing with aliens is heresy. No social layer, because it's irrelevant. No research, because of technological stagnation and religious superstition.

Ok you can make Imperium harvest faith or something by being proactive. In a 4x game you got other factions. Eldar could research and stuff. So could some others.
This is why I said to do it like Endless Legend with each faction being unique in a way. Like how in EL some faction only had one city and you needed to conquer monster camps and produce monsters from there and use those to fight.
