Yeah, playing old games doesn't count, unless you run them on 640x480 CRT with a ball mouse connected through SP/2.

Play some of the games I mentioned dude. They all respect your time. I'm big on games having to respect my time. I can't play anything these days where the game has unskipable dialogue or cutscenes or has lots of menus or something like this.

I have played every KoF from 94 to 14. Never been much into shmups on my home pc, the thrill is just not there when I know I can just press a button and play another 3 lives. :(

So you haven't actually played AoE2HD or AoE2DE then? Because they're actually just the exact same fucking games as the original but with updated graphics, the ability to run out of the box on newer operating systems and some new campaigns/civs to choose from, if anything I would argue they didn't do enough outside of new content to warrant the pricetags they got asked for on launch, there certainly isn't some magical gigantic UI overhaul hiding in there that "modernizes" them for the Bethesda audience. "Muh remaster invalidates your post even though my argument has been invalidated ten times over by now" is cavemen level argumentation. Stop posting you fucking mouthbreathing retard.

Yeah never understood people who credit feed a shmup and are like "yup seen everything NEXT".

The point of these games is to 1CC them or get a good score if scoring isn't broken. Score resets if you continue and its not a 1CC if you continue either.

Nothing wrong with credit feeding as long as you understand it as practice

Man I don't think anyone's mentioned Drakan: Order of the Flame yet. Jank-tacular but a great concept for a game, and very fun in parts.

This is a huge issue I have with games in general. Not just old games, modern games as well.

"Well, it was very janky but fun."

"Yeah, that apple pie that I had, with the camel pee dressing on it, that was a bit off, but it was really good overall."

It's just the nature of the medium, I guess. There's inherently a lot more risk of things going wrong than with other mediums like films or books.

Except for the most tightly-made games, gaming is basically just an exercise in looking past faults to see the good. Something like Drakan was always going to be janky, moreso with 1999's tech than today's, but the game's vision and concept is so cool that you can usually overlook the fact that you're clipping sideways up a wall while you lose health to arrows that aren't even hitting you. And again, it's easier to forgive in 90s games than in modern games, since games from 20+ years ago have the excuse of being exciting and experimental.

If camel piss apple pie was the only food you'd ever tasted, you might forgive the piss in order to enjoy the apples and the pastry.

Man the UI/UX argument is so stupid.

    OK just look at BG1:

Now compare that to Pillars of Eternity (one of the "great" modern games that was listed:

Yes, it is higher definition, but I certainly prefer the UI style of Baldur's Gate. If you're more into the Pillars style, I guess that's your taste, but the Pillars UI is pretty boring and not as useful/user-friendly. (I actually like Pillars 1 as a game, but Baldur's Gate is certainly better)

Other great games from 1998/1999 with excellent UI:

TLDR: Older UI had a ton of personality and flair to it. Some modern games do this, but typically only indie games.

I like SS2 and I think it's better than most games of it's type. But I agree SS1 was better in lots of ways. It was also shockingly ahead of it's time and more advanced than anything else. SS2 less so. SS1 is godlike but I still liked the sequel and finished it twice which I almost never do with games being lazy n stuff.

Also I would add that I am currently playing The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages from 2001 for the first time and I think it's pretty freaking cool, with a great art style.
