It's an improvement over PoE and Sawyer discussions.

Quite a few disappointing results. First off, I understand why many people like W3 and DLC's, but I really fail to see how they are true RPGs. They are more 3rdperson-action games with very light RPG elements thrown in, but eh.

Other than that, I am surprised that the codex still rates D:OS this high, along with the shadowrun series. D:OS at launch and beyond was quite a ride, but it grew stale and boring quite quickly thereafter, losing it's charm and intrique.
And the shadowrun games never spoke to me. They feel very shallow in terms of what cRPGs contain, and poorly and mediocrely executed. I'm sad to see, that Underrail is not rated higher, also.

I saw only those who tell that RPG it is a dungeon crawler from 80-th.
No, it is NOT an PRG today, because PRG today is P:T or PS:T.
There is a fucking huge difference between them.
Well, if you really want to argue about that, Wizardry is obviously more of an RPG than PS:T (in fact Wizardry is kinda the RPG), but we can also agree that they're both RPGs.

Well, they might be obvious to you, since you made the goddamn thing, so you know every nook and cranny. You have to understand that a lot of people go into a game completely blind and that certain choices won't make sense to the type of the character they are playing. Case and point... you say: "There are 4 or 5 things, actually. You didn't unlock the other options because you didn't explore enough."... Great! And how the fuck was I supposed to know that there are more options? I decided to kill that guard then and there, because in the mind of my character this was the perfect opportunity to strike. Turns out if you go left instead of right, and if you don't do X instead of Y, you don't get Z, M and P options, but you do get forced to put on an armor and attack another guard or impersonate someone, despite those two things being the only two things I didn't want to do. Well color me pink and call me a dumb faggot for wanting to play my character the way I want.
Wow.

I think the easiest classification would be turn-based RPG's vs. real-time popamole. And yes, Grimrock with its samba dance is popamole.
If you want, but just throw the rtwp trash into the trash bin too. But to be honest Grimrock has puzzles instead of banal quests which is a significative difference between old-school trends and depressing modern trends (of course there are exceptions). The guy even specifically talked about that here : http://www.grimrock.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6865&p=98177#p98177
It's not about money. LOG1 and LOG2 are how they are because of our preferences and vision of what kind of game we wanted to make. Even if we had 10x the budget, Grimrock games would not be modern open world (quest-based) games, which I personally don't find very interesting. In the early days of LOG2 development we tried to move into this direction, but found out we didn't like where that was leading us.

The best open world games for me are Ultima IV, Ultima V and ascii roguelikes, which tell simple stories on the surface but have compelling world and gameplay. Unfortunately translating these games into modern form is hard as you always seem to lose a lot of their appeal. The abstraction in these games is a really powerful tool for unlocking player's imagination. Ok, but now I'm starting to ramble...

Just a normal day on the Codex.
You haven't paid enough attention, this time he's arguing against someone who says Wizardry is not an RPG.

I wasn't making the claim that newer RPGs aren't RPGs.
Absolutely different games can't be RPG.
Also your "purest definition" shows that is is "true" RPG.

So you divide them by at least "prehistoric RPG" and "modern RPG" or it is all bullshit, and you can with the same success claim that Railroad Tycoon is RPG too, or Battlfield.

Lurker King sperging and 'Whats an RPG?! Discussion 2017 Edition'.

Just a normal day on the Codex.

Irenaeus - Bringing that special Favela flavor to the definition of RPG genre.

Goral - There is only one RPG and its name is AoD. He probably works for the al-Nusra's department of fun and education.

Lurker King - I wish I could write something funny but this one is just a shitty troll. Breaks in presence of arguments.

Chaotic_Heretic - New snowflake. Loves PoE. Should have been aborted many years ago.

vdweller - He really doesn't want to be here but his master Vault Dweller has a dick and that one ain't gonna suck itself.

felipepepe - Once again fucking up a poll results. He doesn't care as long as the 1st place is correct.

Witcher 3 - The proof that decline never ends. As every TW3's voter would say: Potato before RPGs!

Yeah. I think codex is prone for a purge.

Edit: I apologize for not mentioning Konjad and Matt7895 . Such valuable posters that their contribution to rpgcodex is put to shame by Fallout INT 1 dialogue.

Twitcher 3 and AoD almost sharing first place says a lot. That's probably the only interesting conclusion from this poll. Twitcher 3 being first is obviously decline to a disturbingly disgusting degree, however.

Ok. Your claim is not dubious, you owned me with this argument.

I don’t owe you shit. This a forum about games and people having been talking with each other about “The Witcher” series for the past years. If you haven’t notice the correlation between being a pollac and a TW supporter you are either blind, or dishonest, or both. The fact alone that you just assume that everything I said is dubious beforehand suggest that the whole endeavor is pointless.
Own not owe. And no, you don't owe me "personally" anything (no kidding ?).
Yes i have noticed the "correlation". Or at least noticed other people noticing it so there is something to notice. You however failed to notice my argument . And i am the one "not paying attention" ? The point is not about noticing the "correlation" but about casual observations (yours, mine or someone else's - it doesn't matter) not being the same as hard numbers or facts. Casual observation is close to worthless for the purpose you are using it. The purpose being to form strong opinions about a behaviour of a group of people - over the internet (and a national group at that).
If you said for exemple:
"From my observation Potatoes tend to think higher of TW3 on average than others but i don't have any data, only my observation to back it up. It would be interesting to know if hard numbers from this poll supports it. If such behaviour is real the question of 'why' remains open. Is it because of patriotism/nationalism which is my bet - or other reasons like perhaps popularity of the books in Poland or maybe something else ?".
then i would not even blink - and wouldn't even think to write anything or be butthurt. I would agree in fact 100%. But this is not what you wrote at all, not even close.
And so came the controversy.
I don't understand why you can't even agree to disagree, you just keep answering with "I am right and if you disagree - you are misinformed and ignorant" and variations of it.
I believe you are wrong but i'm not calling names and disallowing the opposite opinion, why can't you share this courtesy to others (me in this case) ?
If you answer "because this is the Codex" to the last question i'll kill you. But i'll give your post a brofist before doing it... :salute:
This is my last attempt to be serious on this matter, if i get another insult i will just return to making fun of your posts, or stop answering if no more fun is to be had.

Yours Truly
Butthurt Potato

Meanwhile, on Neogaf...

Honestly considering the "quality" of the average RPGCodex post, I'm not sure they deserve any attention. It's all rampant sexism, racist, GG tier bullshit over there.

It's a shame. They have some darn good RPG articles and analysis.

I've never really understood what RPGs have to do with wanting to be diet 4chan.

It continues to amuse me how unable they are to read between the lines. What is the chief difference between Codex and Neogaf, systematically? Lack of moderation. What is the chief similarity between Codex and 8chan? Lack of moderation. (4chan is moderated these days, so the reference to it instead of 8chan is funny, but you can't expect these people to keep up with current events, 4chan is just an ANONYMOUS HACKERS tier of boogeyman.) It's not that there is something inherently Neo-Nazi in RPG fandom, it's that when you let people air their opinions without banning everyone you start to see the actual makeup of humanity, which includes a genuine diversity of opinion.

Heaven forbid.

Small edit, because HAHA OH GOD I HOPE THIS IS A REFERENCE TO MY SIG:

I mean last time I went, people freely could use nazi signatures, without problems.

I shouldn't have bullied Oblivion so hard. (Although realistically this could be a reference to something else... but yet at the same time it wouldn't surprise me if a unicode character alone triggered them.)

Which is worse: banning someone from posting, or putting "RETARD" "CUCK" "GARGLES DICKS" next to their name?

I suppose it is an academic question at that point, but I get the feeling that DU at least instated that more as trolling than genuine thought control. I mean, it seems like 90% of people who get the tags just take them as a matter of pride rather than being slighted.

Says the guy with no tags, access to all site features, likely never had a thread moved, and the freedom to choose whichever avatar he wants...

I've had my brofisting privileges removed. Being called a "cuck", or slapped with a "DRINKS DUCK JIZZ" tag is nothing compared to that.

pls don't put "duck jizz enthusiast" next to my name, DU
