The biggest disappointments in your personal gaming history

I actually like the NASA aesthetic of the game, shame the game seems to be terrible
I do too, but all the procedurally generated content is crap and gets old real fast while the handcrafted content is questionable at best. And the implementation of factions and key locations ranges from mediocre to outright bad.

My biggest disappointments were for the lack of things that never existed. I remember playing games like Super Metroid, which was contained on 3MB of storage. Then when I found out CD-ROMs could hold 700MB I thought wow, you could have a Metroid game, but 200x bigger. A whole world of Metroid full of secrets to explore.

Well they never made anything even remotely close to that. Instead, they seemed to abandon 2D games altogether, until 8 years later Metroid Fusion came but was short and railroaded you into a linear path with no exploration at all. The press all gave it 9/10

Countless other things that I imagined in my head that would be awesome but no-one even threatened to make
"Metroid Fusion came but was short and railroaded you into a linear path"

This is a meme.
It's not

Fusion was such a massive disappointment, doesn't even count as a metroidvania
The game isn't railroaded.

It completely is, did you even play it?

Diablo IV, Soul Reaver 2, The Witcher series, The Last of Us, Doom 3, Fallout 4, Metro Exodus, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Resident Evil 4.

Diablo IV tops the list because I thought it would be one of the greatest games ever made and a total return to the horror roots of the first Diablo game... Instead, most of it was mediocre, empty, and the gameworld felt unfinished. The voice acting was terrible as were at least half of the characters, attached subplots, and dialogue.

1. The N64
I grew up with NES and Super NES. When the N64 was announced, I was super-hyped! I had a promo VHS where they showed bits of Mario 64, Wave Racer and some other launch titles. I watched that tape easily a hundred times and begged my mom to preorder one for me, which she eventually did.
I ended up owning three games for the N64: Mario 64, Zelda OoT and Mario Kart, none of which I remember too fondly. Especially Zelda OoT - SNES Zelda is probably one of my favourite games of all time and I found the transition to 3D godawful. Never made it past the 4th temple or so. Similar with a lot of other franchises I loved - they either were inferior to their (S)NES precursors (Starfox, Mario, MarioKart), or there wasn't an N64 entry at all (Metroid, Street Fighter, Mega Man), which was actually for the better, I guess. Also on the SNES I first came in touch with cRPGs like Eye of the Beholder and Might&Magic 2 (Albeit those ports already suffered from console decline, as I now know). What did the N64 offer? Quest 64.
Fuck this console, seriously! Why is it so loved? There are maybe 5 games I could recognize as classics, two of them aged horribly (Tried to play goldeneye the other day. Lol those controls and render distance :D )
Boom. My choice was gonna be Ocarina of Time, but you've summed up the N64 on the whole for me too. It was a complete downgrade in almost every way from the previous eras, and a sack of shite.

As for Ocarina of Time, like yourself I loved Link To The Past to bits, definitely in my Top 10 games of all time, and so I worked 2 weeks of 12 hour shifts straight so that I was loaded with cash and could have X-Mas day through New Years off indulging in Ocarina of Time (alongside the likes of Mario 64). It was fucking wank, janky as fuck, puzzles which were a complete breeze (people go on about the Water Temple, but I can't remember it giving me any jip), and boring shit like dicking about on a horse in a field dragged it down further. and Mario 64 felt like a huge step backwards from Super Mario World too.

Ever since then I've a burning hatred for the N64 and most games on there. I also especially detest how Goldeneye is held up as the bees knees of FPS gaming of that era, when LANing Quake 2 and Hexen 2 at the college offices was way, way better.

Honourable mention to The Witcher 3. Having really enjoyed the earlier games, they fluffed the lines on 3 big time.

I was never disappointed since 90's when few screenshots in a magazine could sell you absolutely amazing game, which eventually never came out.

Nowadays I get plenty of early warnings. Always online, Denuvo, Playstation account requirement - this game will be crap, and I don't need to waste any more time reading about it.

I've spent quite a lot of time playing sandbox MMOs with full loot, until they've shut down. I guess not having MMO good enough that would completely take over my life is kind of disappointing in a sense. Technology is there, but every new MMO shits its bed well before launch and I never get a chance to try no-lifing again.

A couple of games come to mind. Neverwinter Nights 1, was a massive disappointment after BG1/2. Supreme Commander 2 was a downgrade in every aspect to SupCoM1. F.E.A.R. 2 and F.E.A.R. 3. Stronghold 2. Dawn of War 2. Deus Ex Invisible Wars. HoMM 4.
I think after these I've stopped to expect any improvements from sequels.

Hm, I also grew up with NES and SNES, and the N64. I remember it fondly spending lots of time on multiplayer modes with my brothers. There were many games for that, Mario Kart 64, Bomberman 64, Golden Eye, Super Smash Bros., Star Fox 64, etc. I have never played Zelda and Mario, because we only bought games that came with MP.

Diablo 3 for sure. I was a massive fan of the first two. It was nothing alike. Dumbed down character builds, shitty comic graphics, bad cartoon villain story and boring class locked items.

I tried the Diablo 4 beta weekend and recognized it was trash straight away. It felt even more like a cheap failed third party console game. (Which it is lol)

I'm guessing that you didn't experience and of the more superior systems to play on beforehand, such as the SEGA Mega Drive + Saturn and the PC? Because I can understand the N64 being highly regarded if you hadn't, but most those games you list there have superior counterparts on other systems (the one which doesn't it Mario Kart 64).

Quake 2 + Hexen 2>>>Goldeneye
Street Fighter + Yu Yu Haksho series>>>Super Smash Bros
X-Wing + Tie Fighter series + Panzer Dragoon series >>>Star Fox 64

I started with Amiga, then NES, SNES/PC/N64. Haven't touched consoles since then - they look like worse PC's nowadays. My only Sega experience was with a handheld Game Gear.

The differences between some of these games are large enough that I'd say its apples and oranges. Super Smash and Street Fighter are very different games, the same is true for 3D and 2D Bomberman (I played Dynablaster and Super Bomberman). I don't share the sentiment that they either is vastly superior over the other. All of those are good games in my book.

I detest playing shooters with a controller, and vastly prefer PC-shooters(Heretic/Hexen, Doom, Blood, Quake, DN3D,...) with mouse and keyboard. So no disagreement there, but as a console game Golden Eye had one big advantage back then, the local split-screen multiplayer. There also weren't many shooters on console back then, and Goldeneye was decent enough - I think that and the license are the main reason for its popularity. On an absolute scale I wouldn't put it anywhere near the top of the shooter genre.

Can't comment on the last set of space games, since I haven't played them.

Tomb Raider The Angel Of Darkness.

Somehow we get one of the best and most meme worthy versions of Lara in one of the worse and most unplayable games ever made. What a piece of shit, and because of it we have been stuck with over a decades worth of Lara Croft crying about every little thing in existance.

Gothic 3 - still remembering the massive online rage following the release, right around the time I had just completed the first two games for the first time.
Might and Magic IX - a bizzare turd as the last release in the original M&M series, such an unfair finale.
Stronghold 2 - and everything after it. It's a miracle Firefly is still in the business considering the last proper game dates from 2002.
Icewind Dale - mainly because I had been expecting something more akin to BG, i.e. less linear and featuring more open world elements.
Oblivion - everything about it has already been said

Special mention:
Realms Beyond - the only disappointment in ages considering its wasted massive potential.

+1 to Quake II and Gothic 3.

Quake II was a generic sci-fi piece of shit compared to the Lovecraftian horror of the first Quake.

Gothic 3 is super boring and broken jank when I played it at launch.

I see no one's mentioned Descent to Undermountain yet.

The hype was p. high for it, but its execution was a true trainwreck. Received (justifiably) brutal reviews and the game was nearly unplayable.

Sad because its concept is great.

I also especially detest how Goldeneye is held up as the bees knees of FPS gaming of that era,

No one thinks that, just console peasants who couldn't afford computers. Same type of shit with FF7.

Also the n64 was way better than the saturn.
N64's a young kids machine. Barely any RPGs, SHMUPs, Fighting games or turn-based/tactical games. It's library is anemic as fuck.

I've a burning hatred for the N64 and most games on there.

I'm sorry your big brother never let you play Conker's Bad Fur Day multiplayer with him and his friends.

Laughs in LANing Quake 2 at college
