Man, ToME is really fun. I got it a few days ago and have been playing it semi-furiously. This might be my favorite Roguelike ever. The only thing I don't approve of is having to unlock all the interesting classes, races and certain talent trees in a Roguelike. I found an addon to unlocks all the classes and races, but I can't find a way to unlock the Talents which is busting my balls and making me unable to build my Necromancer the way I want to.

Hmmm there is a way to unlock the trees via editing a file. I did it back when TOME wasnt on steam. I believe it still works so if you are interested PM me and I can tell you how or just give you my file with unlocks.

Sproggiwood is live on Steam/Humble for $14.99---definitely something of a lighter-hearted approach, but woe to any that can't see all the personality and care that the devs behind Caves of Qud are weaving into it in order to give it a nice place at the table unto itself. Caves of Qud is nowhere near to being something they are done with either...

So have you been trolled by it yet? I got tired of getting ganked from lack of meta knowledge.

Most important thing to know to win ToME is right click on every enemy and check their stats to see what skills they have at what levels etc.

Also the most tedious and stupid thing about ToME. Every other enemy has 25 god damned level 10 skills.

This is a nice game, but a little too easy so far, 2 hours in, I am still near start of the game, so it is best to reserve the difficulty critique until after I have completed the game first. I have died several times but mostly due to me rushing. Killing stuff feels really sweet.

The thing I really like is that the classes do play very distinctly.

Imagine if they put that level of polish in CoQ...

Do you play it on Adventurer? I think it's balanced around that, not Roguelike. At least, until you gain enough metaknowledge.

I dont remember actually. Tome has a non permanent death game type or is that just like a difficulty level?

In any case, I have played RLs for decades. Part of the reason I like them is because every move counts and you need to be cautious and calculating to have a hope of success. When I die in one, invariably I can point to an error or misjudgment on my part as the cause for death - sometimes explainable bad luck, insufficient contingencies/preparation, going to far out of depth, etc. When I can't rightly point to how I could have prevented a death it bothers me.

I played the expansion briefly, it's not worth the $ when considering the game used to ship 1 new class and 20 new artifacts every 6 months for free but to help the developer survive it's pretty good stuff.

I'm surprised you went for the all unlock option HoboElf, there's so much stuff to do it's pretty overwhelming and content is unlocked at a steady rate and it feels rewarding. First time to the East? New Class! The Necromancer only has 1 tree locked I think, he just needs to do 1 million points of cold damage to unlock it. The game has some insanely fun classes, the Psychic and Afflicted classes may just be the best, the way they have a unique playstyle and really rewarding gameplay. You should give the Paradox Mage a try too, super fun, OP and will get completely reworked soon so I'll be gone.

My roguelike of the moment is Desktop Dungeons, it's just a phenomenal game. Imagine the perfect blend of puzzle and traditional roguelike and there you have it. This is a roguelike where you find yourself sitting for 5 minutes straight plotting your next several moves, it captures both genres to a T. Insanely hard. And it has graphics and charm too, spiffy.

The rogulike I currently play is "Dungeon of Slyn" for my mobile (Windows phone). You have 10-11 levels of dungeon, plus additional 5 levels of gnome mines filled with gnomes. The game is lethal as fuck, but also fun as hell. It has this cartoony, not to serious design, that works like a charm. Also unless you're playing wizards you'll get hexed all the time, trying to read unidentified scrolls and drinking unknown potions. Good times.

Since I'm poor and dirty I can only afford the basic version, so no ranger and cleric for me. They only come in the premium package. Buy it if yu can. It's reall worth it.

I agree, the game DOES have insanely fun classes. That's why hiding all the interesting ones behind unlocks is borderline insane. I play almost exclusively as magic users in Roguelikes and the Alchemist is the most uninteresting choice for a caster available.

It's all about contingencies, exit strategy and discipline. I once lost my level 39 dwarf fighter by laziness. I leaned on the attack button in a room full of hounds. Simple bleeding stacks and a string of bad rolls and I was a goner. Impatience and lack of discipline.

Most interesting Archmage's ability is Disruption Shield. With high Disruption Shiled and Shileding skills, and high Spellpower you can have 0.15 mp/hp ratio, turning emptiness in your mana pool into thousands worth of shield. And this shield can be "refilled" by casting any expensive spell, and be on all the time, if you don't mind keeping eye on your mana level (i.e. keeping it low). Mana drains or dispells can remove this shield, though.

Looks like that approach would make you complacent, fat and soft. When encountering a real threat that brings down your shields, you are dead.

The archmage is just broken, I first played him on nightmare difficulty he's so easy. But still, there's so much unexpected stuff happening a new player will probably still end up losing with him.

Anyone heard anything about Sproggiwood? Apparently it's a new roguelike from the developers of Caves of Qud. It looks cutesy, and sounds like you have some town you upgrade in between dungeon runs that will help you progress, which sounds interesting. Might pick it up on a steam sale.

I don't mind the cuteness, but that gold-collection animation makes it look like a Facebook game...

Otherwise, it reminds me of Dungeons of Dredmor, which I still play from time to time.

Sproggiwood is good stuff---lighter in tone, but has some meat on the bones as befitting the CoQ team. I expect good things for it indeed post-release..

In reading a book I imagine what a creature or monster looks like. I mentally construct the setting. In this same way I find ANSI graphics are best for roguelikes. Far better than some sprite IMO.

That looks pretty cool, actually. I like kickstarters with something to actually show. While I probably won't back it, I'll definitely keep an eye on it.
