Well you bastards made me play DCSS. Got a naga fighter of chei with 2 runes. Running around chopping guys up with my blade hands, just killed roxanne and got a book with statue form, statue naga of chei was the goal when I started so i'm about halfway there now.

This is uh... not the optimal way to play dungeon crawl lol. Ultra slow movement can be problematic, but so far so good. Slouch is just a wonderful "oh shit" button though.

Can you still remove mutations in v28? I got irradiated and now I have -4 int and random stat loss when hit. Not the worst things in the world but normally I'd quaff a mut potion and hope for the best at this point. (cure mutation was removed a version or two back, so you gotta drink mutation potions and play mutation roulette when removing muts now, or at least, that's how it was last time i played).

Got a good run of dungeon crawl going. Statue Naga of Chei, moves slow as hell but hits hard as a truck. Picked up a new spell I hadn't seen before, "Manifold Assault", performs a melee attack against every enemy in sight. 5mp per cast is a bit high, but being able to punch everyone onscreen at the same time is huge. Admittedly it's a little redundant with slouch.

Didn't see this coming, Desktop Dungeons is getting a big visual overhaul/rerelease. Much more than a simple bit of paint, though lord knows the tiny resolution of the original needed something fresh.

3D, which I imagine will be contrary to average codexer's taste, but it seems like it's the same great coffeebreak roguelike, with the notable difference of a "rewind" feature, so I imagine this'll be another good title for getting more people to attempt the jump from roguelites to traditional roguelikes.

Tiny announcement on Steam:
Greetings Desktop Dungeons players! The rumors were true! The ones about a remastered edition, not the ones about the self-aware fungus on uh nevermind... Back to our announcement. Desktop Dungeon: Rewind is soon to be released so you'll be able to explore, slay and scheme through the game with gloriously updated graphics.

PC Gamer article:
Desktop Dungeons (opens in new tab) originally came out in 2011, and was a game I instantly fell in love with. And not in some genteel, courtly manner either: our passionate dungeon-crawling sessions would stretch long into the wee hours, as I suffered little deaths innumerable and grasped modifiers untold.

Sorry. It's a great game! And even if you've never played Desktop Dungeons, you'll have played one of the games subsequently influenced by its smart ideas. It plays like a kind of mini-roguelike, where each run's success or otherwise feeds into the next, with an overarching system of characters and classes alongside things like deities that set 'rules' for your playthroughs to follow. A standout element of the design is that you heal by exploring, making a good route-planning mindset as important as a big sword.

It's one of those where a single game could take ten minutes but, somehow, you're still there four hours later.

So today is a good day, as the new boutique publisher Prismatika has announced Desktop Dungeons: Rewind: an isometric 3D remake of the IGF-winning 2D original. The new subtitle highlights the game's Rewind feature, which will allow players to (somewhat) cheat death with "an insurance policy that allows you to replay a dungeon from an earlier point, try different strategies and defeat monsters in new ways."

It's shown off in action at the end of the above trailer. Other features listed are similar to what was in Desktop Dungeons: Enhanced Edition (still available on Steam, and still great (opens in new tab)), so expect a bunch of classes and to be building up your kingdom over time and daily online challenges.

Hopefully this remake takes account of all the great roguelikes released since the original, and lifts a few ideas back for itself: I imagine after the likes of Darkest Dungeon, the kingdom building side might feel a little slight now. It'll also be interesting to see if it retains that odd little feature it had of custom tilesets (in fact, the original game's look is down to none other than Spelunky creator Derek Yu)

You can read our positively ancient review of the original game here (opens in new tab). Desktop Dungeons was and is a cracker, so fingers crossed this remake can bring that beautiful core loop into the modern age. The trailer says it's coming "very soon" to Steam, but there's no release date yet.

Is it good and worth playing? I never tried it before
The alpha (that's still officially around the internet for free) was better than the final version. It had less content but it was more balanced and less swingy.

The final version expanded the meta progression with more equipment, random secret rooms, bounties, trickier gods and a collection of "fuck you" enemies and challenges that were more painful than fun.

Never tried the alpha version, but i did like the final version of the Desktop Dungeons fair enough.
The only little moment that irked me is that your hero's gender is randomized and thus you can start with the female character. They made this article in which devs praised themselves about how progressive they are for making the vast majority of the female portraits as ugly as possible and i guess they realised that nobody would choose them unless forced.

Is it me or it's really lewd?
I'm changing three words and ohgawd.

Friendzoned is a sci-fi turn-based Roguelike. Blast your way into the pantsuless sectors battling dangerous creatures, outlaws, and the environment itself. But you'll need your wits to make best use of the variety of resources you stumble upon to survive and claim the head of your bounty!

:shredder:

Demo.Graph, where did you get that text from? O.o (Am I blind?)

Nice visuals. Saddens me how few games ultimately pull off pixel graphics well (I guess they think that's enough as far as art style goes?). But this manages it :D kinda reminds me of Crypt of the Necrodancer in that respect, but obviously with a muuuch darker and off-tone palette.

Upcoming changes in DCSS v0.29

There are more, but these caught my eye while I was quickly scanning them. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a comprehensive list of them.

Ammo for bows, slings, etc. is being removed.
Armor impacts ranged attack delay.
Bows, crossbows, and slings skills are combined into a single Ranged Combat skill.

Monsters adjacent to the player gain a 1/3 chance to gain a free attack if the player moves away from them. Wu Jian martial attacks & rampaging give immunity.

Yeah, only found out about the guy recently, from his pretty roguelite autobattler Boneraiser Minions which impressed me.

Thought it was one of those things where everything was intentionally a bit grotesque -- somewhat akin to the old covers Josh Kirby made for Pratchett's Discworld novels. Never could bring myself to care about characters much when they're this impersonal and without a narrative grounding, but I don't know why they'd deny players choice like that. And given the aforementioned, I don't quite agree with that line of reasoning. ^^;

Oh good, it's important that the wildly OP armor/ranged attack combination is being addressed. LOL at least they're finally, finally after all these years, getting rid of the pointless ammo that just stopped you from using your low level hunter's primary weapon early on. After a couple of floors you never ran out of ammo anyway, the ammo stuff was really just pointless after they removed the different ammo types. Sure, why not lump all the skills together I guess? Don't really get it, but don't hate it...

The monsters getting a free attack when players move away is just a difficulty increase for most characters, especially weaker ones. It just means more free attacks on you while you run to the stairs/a narrow hallway.

Wu Jian was interesting before they neutered it because they were mad at the guy who came up with the idea (no really). Spite is a big part of DCSS development. Back in the day, a dude named "Berder" on the forums put up a guide on winning with an octopode fighter of dithmenos, a big part of the strategy was using shadow step on plants to escape sometimes. Devs didn't like Berder, or someone going against the prevailing wisdom of the crowd, so they made shadow step not work on plants.

T.O.M.E. also. I've been playing Tales of Maj'Eyal and Zangband on my Linux rig off and on for years now. Haven't beat either, but I still have fun playing them.

I enjoyed playing Zangband due to the large amount of races you can choose and the fun combos you can make (Kobold Death Knight just for the hell of it). ADOM was fun the other way, as it had a lot of character classes compared to the available races, and the random mutations also add to the craziness. T.O.M.E. rewards multiple play throughs by making more classes and races available as you unlock achievements. T.O.M.E., ADOM, and Zangband all have linux installation files. What is the best rogue-like out right now for varied character builds regardless of gaming platform?

There's not a ton of Windows-'exclusive' traditional roguelikes, but with the state of Proton these days I believe that almost all of them -- e.g. Cogmind (proton), Rift Wizard (proton), Shiren the Wanderer (etc.) -- are now effectively compatible with Linux. I'm by no means an expert on *nix, but I just got a Steam Deck which is based on some distro or other, and the only issues are with setting up inputs, or maybe some text scaling. The games themselves run just fine.

Catacombs gave you a great list of free games, though I'd add Infra Arcana, and BrogueCE; and HyperRogue, UnReal World, and Tales of Maj'Eyal all have free versions available (inc. Linux builds).

If you're cool with paying for games, then maybe check out Jupiter Hell, Tangledeep, or Caves of Qud. They're all fun, native to Linux, and quite unique experiences imo.

Out of each of those categories, if I was to only recommend one of each, I'd say try Rift Wizard, Infra Arcana, and Tangledeep. Hope this helped at all. :)

If we're being loose on the definition of a "roguelike," I'll throw in Dwarf Fortress. Build a fortress, last as long as possible, die, repeat.
