This shouldn't come as a big surprise to anybody: Todd Howard and Co. are bringing The Elder Scrolls to the digital online cyberspace world.

Long rumored and much anticipated, The Elder Scrolls Online is finally being unveiled in the June issue of Game Informer. In this month's cover story we journey across the entire land of Tamriel, from Elsweyr to Skyrim and everywhere in between.

Developed by the team at Zenimax Online Studios, The Elder Scrolls Online merges the unmatched exploration of rich worlds that the franchise is known for with the scale and social aspects of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm.

"It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years," said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor, whose previous work includes Mythic's well-received Dark Age of Camelot. "The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."

An in-depth look at everything from solo questing to public dungeons awaits in our enormous June cover story – as well as a peek at the player-driven PvP conflict that pits the three player factions against each other in open-world warfare over the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne itself.

Three factions. Wow, they're really breaking the mold here. WoW-killer for sure. Right?
The game will be unveiled in the June issue of Bethesdainformer. Read about it here.

Update:
Ooops. I guess it's being developed by ZeniMax Online, not Bethesda Softworks. Oh well.

Thanks Ulminati!

Very sad news. I can't see them making a TES VI now, since it'll obviously compete with the MMO. I reckon Bethesda Game Studios will turn their attention to destroying the Fallout franchise and leave Elder Scrolls to Zenimax Online.

Why bother? The fanbase will just fill it with furry cybersex anyway

I think the DLC (Dawnbreaker) for Skyrim will be 50% like a new title. Maybe opening up areas outside of Skyrim, adding new... stuff... and things... Then they'll probably make another bigger DLC. Maybe some horse armor too.
Anyway my point is you'll probably be able to wet your dick in singleplayer TES gaming for a couple of years to come, regardless of TESO.

Yeah, fallout will be raped once again. I think they will announce "Oblivion with guns 2" by the end of next year at the latest.

If this turns out to be some kind of Skyrim Online, I'll definitely give it a try.

I had fun with Skyrim for ~90 hours and will definitely come back some day, so, yeah... there are hopes.
Then again, it might turn out to be WoW in 1st person...

Or rather, Skyrim with Guns: Set in the frozen post-apocalyptic wastelands of Quebec, interact with French pidgin-speaking locals, fight giant mutated bears, and choose between the expanding rule of the Brotherhood of Steel or the freedom-fighting New Separatists!

Are there any native bird specimen in the area they could use?

Oh hey, that's before the divine retcon that turned Cyrodil from a lush jungle to a generic forest, isn't it?

I'm sure Bethesda cares so much about their setting that they will take that into account in the game design.

Right?

Gunning down legions of Separatists? I'd pay for this. It'd be better as a sci-fi game with a "Nuke 'em from Orbit" option though.

Taking one of the most successful single player franchises ever and shitting on it with an MMORPG game is a great idea from a business standpoint. Just look at all of the wildly successful competitors to WoW. Then again it's seemingly being created by a different team and just milking the name.

I'm surprised it's PC/Mac only and not for consoles as well. Watch it be a Facebook game or something.

I hope it fails because if not, brace yourselves for Fallout: A Post Apocalyptic Multiplayer Game.
That interplay one was canned, right? I remember signing up for their mailing list and I never got any e-mails from them. They probably sold the address list to some viagra spambot company.

I, for one, think that, after their previous games, MMO is a natural continuation of dumbing down and shitting up. At least they are being sincere to themselves.

God how i detest MMORPG but its a natural follow up of the Bethesta masterplan. first dumbing down the gamemechanics to the MMORPG level and easing the transitions and then going full MMORPG. Brilliant.

Well, the Dragon Break (that one when Tiber uses Numidium, the dwemer mecha, to create the Empire) fits perfectly for a MMORPG scenario, so no complaints about the lore.
TES would do a very interesting sandbox Ultima Online-like MMORPG but lets be realistic, it will be a "WoW-killer" that tries to copy every aspect of it's nemesis, from gameplay to the cartoonish art direction. And don't forget about the PVP only on arenas far away from the PVE carebears that prefer to play an online game like a singleplayer game and the extremely controlled environment where any kind of competition and hostility is censored.

Seeing a TES Sandbox UO type MMO would be really interesting.
But sadly, that will not happen. Nobody makes sandbox MMOs anymore, everyone just wants to copy WoW, as already stated.
