The real kicker is that the weapon used to slay Xeen pretty much oneshots everything in Darkside. I forget the exact mechanics of it but it's obscenely overpowered. Definitely some unresolved issues with the merging of the two games.
Huh, really? It has a fairly normal damage range.

The reason why this sword is so good is that it ignores physical damage resistance. Versus monsters without resistances other weapons are far better and may even allow wearing a shield. Most useful is this sword versus the megadragon who has 90 percent damage resistance, so you can call it *10 versus megadragons.

That's good to know. As far as I remember the game doesn't mention that when identifying the sword.

Started playing MM7 for the first time yesterday and was rather quickly reminded why I gave up on MM6: endless hordes of enemies. The older titles had the combat right: fast and to the point. I think I've killed more than 100 goblins after leaving Harmondale. Lazy and crap encounters. And people actually like this shit?

What about MM2 and MM1 where you could fight against large numbers of enemies in a single combat?

Maybe your character build is bad? And maybe you're not playing with latest grayface patch? The latter has a 2x animation speed included, really taking the tedium out of the game, and the former is also important since the combat will take, like, forever if you go into it with unoptimized build.

No comment, haven't really played them that far. My experience mostly extends to MM3, 4 & 5. But there were sometimes large groups of enemies in those games too. Difference being that they were killed much faster.

Will faster animation speed make the encounters more tactical and diverse? No. The main problem isn't that there are about as many enemies to kill as in Diablo, although this still is a huge issue. The problem is that they are about as boring to kill as the enemies in Diablo:M. Who the fuck wants to kill a pack of 10 rats only to find another pack of 10 rats around the corner? MM3, 4 & 5 was much more fast paced and put you through less shit. Not to mention that looking at the enemies was much more pleasing to the eye thanks to the vibrant colors and unique art style.
As for poor party setup, who knows. I'm not a min/max faggot. I just chose whatever I thought sounded useful and interesting. I highly doubt it's the most optimal party, but probably a good one for a beginner like me. It's not the issue here though. The problem here is poor encounter design.

What's with this obsession about MM music? I heard two seconds of the MM3 music before I couldn't stand it anymore and turned it off.

I don't get it too. I mean, composition is great, but it's just a MIDI... Even on super-duper-mega-precious SC it sounds like shit compared to Amiga :yeah:

Seriously, try Macintosh version under Basilisk...

When I played world of xeen back in the early 90s, there was this issue where if you entered a shop with the sound effects on, the game would crash when you tried to exit the shop.

Anyone remember this? What was the deal with that? Will I still have to worry about it if I replay the game using something like the gog version?

tavern was the worst, but if you change the sound effect to just Soundblaster it works fine.

i think it is some bug with having Soundblaster Pro on sound effects.

Does the game have an option for SB16? because that's what I had, and I don't think you could set it to higher than SBPro so that's what I set the game to, and when I played the game back then (the original floppy release, so no patches) I didn't have this problem. In fact I don't think I ever had any bug in WOX at all, barring very early on some problems getting Darkside to integrate properly (but then it turned out I was being stupid anyway and fixed it easily).

i think it only affects Clouds of Xeen, thats where i encountered it many years ago (that red-head tavern wench killed the game for me with a screech), setting it to SB16 or other fixed it for me.

I'm thinking about picking these up again. I only really ever played 2, and 7. I think 2 may have been one of the first rpg's I ever played and I remember being in love with it when I was a kid. Later on I got 7 and pretty much thrashed it so I dont think I want to revisit it since I have so much on my list to play.

Story arc wise I am thinking of starting with 3 and then world of Xeen then maybe 6. Is this recommendable? Or can I just go straight to Xeen? So many games, so little time....

Also should I get the GOG 6in1? Or is there a better version I can pick up. I would like to apply fan patches for a "better" experience if possible.

No and no. Recommended: play all through 1-5, in that order. Though if you already finished 2 you can skip it I guess.

The GOG version is the only legal one around these days, so nothing better, and for 1-3 at least it is the best one to get. I hate the 2-CD version of WOX with a passion, but others don't, and I think the GOG version has the regular WOX so you're fine there. No fan patches for 1-2 and 4-5, 3 has a recently released one that'll fix some nasty bugs, but some versions of it also change basic gameplay in ways I dislike intensely. Check a few pages back for more details.

ok thanks.. hmm honestly not sure I can stomach 1 and 2 these days I am too much of a graphicsfag also lack of mapping kind of put's me off. I guess you don't really play these games for the story anyway.

MM2 has automap and is one of the best looking CRPGs of the EGA era.

Having now beaten MM7 I'd say that it is my favorite M&M in the series. I started playing MM8 yesterday, but it's a lot less interesting. I'm not sure if I'm just burned out after 3 weeks of playing MM7 or if the game just really is banal. I'll play a little bit further and decide later. I like the new races/classes though. The chance to play as a Troll or Minotaur is kind of cool. Also thought that the way they went with the party creation is lame. I prefer to make my own from scratch.
Gave MM6 another chance 2 weeks ago but once again I lost interest at the Temple of Baa. What is it with this game that keeps making me lose interest in it. :M

I got really fucking sick of MM7 after having just finished 6, then I restarted after combining it with a bit of Grimrock and now I'm really into it. Maybe you just need to do the same: take a break and start again (as long as you're not too far into it, which judging by you being at the Temple may mean that you're not).

Did 3-5 have the character advancement quests? I can't remember if they did; if they didn't, it was quite a neat thing to bring back from 2.

You're probably right. I tried playing M&M4+5 after M&M3, and even though it was clearly the superior game, I just couldn't stomach it. Was too burned out. Guess it just happened again. I think it's just that I don't feel like running around looking for those Trainers again. Shit gets a bit tedious when you try not to use guides, maps or faqs.

Anyhoodles, now I just need to think of something else to play while I'm on cool down.
