I) is... unwise. No matter what one's beliefs are, fixing a broken leg is still fixing a broken leg, even if it's done in a Nazi-controlled city.

B) is a definite must. That leaves us with the problem of chosing the second action:

C) is quite risky. If we'll go for getting in contact with the Governor, then D) would be the safer option. E) may draw some unwanted attention from the local Gestapo, so, again, that may be unwise. If we're going to stay here for a longer time and we need money, F) (getting a job from Cortez) may be the best option. H) may be a waste of time at the moment. If we're staying, we'll be able to do it a bit later. I think that the best thing to do would be to get a grip of what's happening on this parallel, so I'll go for A). Doing anything else would mean that we're going to go in half-cocked, no matter what other choice we make.

tl;dr: A)B)

You cannot be the enemy, you have not defiled your mind with machinery.
Nice. So the Titans use semi-intelligent machines but stick only to genetic engineering when it comes to themselves? Some Gaian faction there... And there ARE those who defile their minds with machinery (The Hive? Lacking something better, I'm sticking with Alpha Centauri names).

A) B) - we have enough fuel for an emergency transport in case it's needed, so we don't have to rush with refueling just yet. Intel and healing are mandatory, however.

I'm not going to say much, but it is pretty safe to assume that the ship's intelligence, has either gone mad from the isolation or was damaged in the crash. So it isn't exactly a good example of what the titans are capable in the field of AI. The titans obviously have a proper name, Heracles could have learned that ii if he was a bit more persuasive. Really if it was not for the neural probe, and the whole face to face encounter with the titan, lying to it might have ended real bad. Heracles had a few good educated guesses about the craft's origin (he isn't some dumb thug but an engineer after all) based on his past experience which allowed him to salvage the situation.

That's why I didn't vote for lying M:

Thanks for the clarification; you're doing a great job of keeping the story interesting! :salute:

A)…visit the library and read newspapers or browse the internet if possible. Better to learn what exactly happened here rather than guess based on a bunch of posters.
- browsing the interwebz for ebony and interracial gangbang
B)…try to find a doctor. Preferably one that won’t charge money to make a proper cast for that leg of yours. Hopefully there is a charity or something around here, or the hospital requires no insurance.

Atlantis seems like some kind of Soviet style "democracy"... Do not like.
At least the font got bigger...

I was getting more of a Nazi "utopia" vibe from Atlantis, but, after all, the Soviet "democracy" and Nazi "utopia" are, on a fundamental level, so much alike that you could barely distinguish them. And Heracles, if he were a good Atlantean, he would feel like at home on a Nazi parallel. Fortunately for this LP, he seems to not have been "educated" well enough in the Atlantean ways.

It's more of a very corrupt republic, hence the coupist background in the opening post. There is free speech for limited and full citizens, but not for slaves, they have almost no rights at all. There is no vote-rigging so elections are fair, and technically any full citizen may form or join a political party. But the truth is that the plutocracy rules the show. The few extremely rich families control the media, and try to out-bribe each other when wanting to gain "favors" from politicians. The media forms public opinion thus enforcing the status quo. The general population does not care, because frankly the standards of living are high, so they just keep voting for the same two parties. Living standards are high for citizens that is, slaves can whine all they want but they can't do anything. Only the natives of some of the conquered parallels, for reasons both ideological and economical, are unhappy with what Atlantis is doing. Which is unsurprising because strip-mining the place, after bombing the natives, takes priority over offering higher living standards to "primitive barbarians". That and nobody likes becoming a slave overnight, because the Atlantean overlords demanded that you become one.

That and nobody likes becoming a slave overnight, because the Atlantean overlords demanded that you become one.

Where to start?...

First, having a controlled media is quite the antithesis of freedom of speech. If the media owners don't agree with what you're saying, they just make it so nobody hears what you're saying. Look how it works even here, in our good ol' US of A: there is freedom of speech guaranteed by the constitution but that is binding only for the government. All the media companies are private and they can impose whatever limits on free speech they want because they can do whatever the fuck they want with their property. If the government wants to limit freedom of speech, they need just force the private companies to do it under threat of further regulation, removal of tax breaks or any other types of leverage. In the EU, on top of that, we have other lovely things called hate speech laws and libel laws. <sarcasm>That does a bunch of good to freedom of speech!</sarcasm> Limits on freedom of speech come in many forms. It doesn't have to be a partyvan waiting for you to talk shit about the plutocrats so that they can disappear you. The "no vote-rigging" is meaningless when you control the discourse, which, in turn, makes the elections anything but fair.

Second, slavery hasn't been associated with any place worth living in quite a long time. Combine that with death through torture, genocide and a military that keeps the wool over the eyes of the civilian population and you have an almost picture-perfect description of a crapsack world.

Third, the fact that the non-slave population is kept in comfort and indifferent to the shit happening around them is even more dystopian. It is simply unnnatural for the whole population to agree with a system that abusive and controlling and not react in any way. If there were at least a few malcontents constantly making noise and gettng put down by the partyvans even on A-00, then it would be at least remotely plausible. But when nobody is saying anything, then it goes beyond "we have high living standards" and into "we have been brainwashed and/or are in a chemically-induced torpor". Again, dystopias come in many flavours. It doesn't have to be a post-apocalyptic wasteland of some kind or jack-booted repression and control in the vein of "1984". You can have "Brave New World" dystopias, where the populace is kept in line not by repression but by subversion, so that they actually have no issue with what is happening to them.

So, calling Atlantis just "a very corrupt republic" is a gross understatement.

I can agree with that, my point is though that there are technically some democratic standards in place, but as you mentioned it, they get bypassed. Although even the third reich and soviet union had facades of democracy like the soviet constitution. The average joe likes the status quo because he's getting his "bread and circus" hence the wide-spread apathy among citizens. There is discontent but it is limited to small factions that the establishment ignores. That is until any of them grow strong enough or start using terrorism. It's kind of like Russia a few years back, yeah there are people who say the government is shit, but for every one of them there are at least six who will vote Putin.

Another newspaper, this might be the last one (outside of those Heracles may find somewhere) for a while since I'm running out of ideas for articles. Well ones that wouldn't spoil or hint too much anyway. As for what the conspiracy nuts believe about Ajax, he was never there, too many agents around in that parallel. You may get more clues on where he went soon...

...or not

1.11 It’s like that thing Ray Bradbury was talking about

Time to do some research, you don’t know much about these Nazis. It should also help you find out what kind of technology they lack. As you head out towards the library it starts raining. The falling raindrops cover the city in a grey mist. Fortunately the library is not far. The inside of the library looks different than it did in αδ-37. You approach the female librarian, and start asking her where can you find the newspapers from the past 10 years and the computer terminals.

“Sir, as you should know, all press from before 2007 was destroyed as dictated by the Governor General’s order. Furthermore possessing Jewish press from before the liberation is considered a crime against the Aryan race. Therefore, for your own safety, I ask you to stop inquiring about forbidden publications.” – the librarian reluctantly informs you.

Well surely they have some newer press don’t they? “Sir, in case you have forgotten, newspapers were declared a useless Jewish invention and thus outlawed. After all every publication approved by the Governor General’s censorship bureau can be found online. The same applies to traditional paper books, those promoting untermensch ideas could be easily hidden. Therefore, to ensure our pure American society can prosper free of the influence of inferior races, they have also been outlawed. Please report anyone who is hiding paper books in his home to the New American Police. I understand, that you must be a newly pardoned POW, who is not yet fully aware of all the changes that have happened since the war. However please read the necessary acts of law introduced by the Governor General.”

So what exactly are they doing in a library if all books are banned? “We transcribe the approved publications to our new servers before destroying the hardcopies. With the help of Zuse Computers technicians and engineers, including some from the Reich itself of course. The new server equipment is quite complicated, it is after all imported Reich technology. But with their help this library, like all libraries in the Reich itself, will soon become a major database and part of the new "Weltnetz" infrastructure.”

Weltnetz? “That’s the network we used to replace the obviously Jewish internet with, it is compatible with all the new Zuse computer terminals and the old PCs and Macs using ZOS-32.” Alright so do they have any terminals here, you would like to search for “approved” publications after all. “Of course sir, just go into that room over there.”

Soon afterwards you find the terminal, it looks rather advanced. You use the highly responsive touch-screen interface to search for recent history. What you find is pretty much entirely propaganda and decrees. “The Reich helps rebuild New Port City.” ”POW freed by the Governor General’s order.” ”The first fusion power plant in America under construction.” Fusion plant? Well the rift-probe must have missed that, it’s not like they can easily spot those from orbit.

You can’t find anything useful apart from one information about gun control. Anyone that isn’t a soldier or policeman cannot posses a gun. Furthermore there are “gun-detectors” installed around key administration buildings, the article doesn’t specify how they detect guns, it could be some over-sized metal detector you guess. Fortunately there doesn’t seem to be one near the library or you would have been arrested by now.

You also managed to find a mention of a “humanitarian” free clinic ran by doctor Kohler. It is located not far from where your apartment in αδ-37 was. Might as well check it out, maybe he can do something about this damn leg. It will take you a while to get to the clinic, after all you are broke and have to walk everywhere. It is also getting dark rather fast. The monotony of the journey is suddenly interrupted by a most disturbing signal. “WARNING! Magnitude 3 rift detected. Estimated distance: 45 kilometers.” – the RGM informs you when you take a peek at its display in a secluded back alley.

Magnitude 3? It is big enough to transit a group of people, a vehicle or a container. It is rather far from the city, whoever is transiting here does not want to attract attention. Who could it be though? Titans? CTPCT? Pioneers? Better tread carefully, the odds of anyone transiting near your location by pure accident are low. This is a fairly remote parallel after all. Someone may be following you, it is best to avoid transit for a while.

You arrive at doctor Kohler’s clinic, outside of the doctor and his two assistants there isn’t anyone there. “What do we have here? It looks crude but it’s not half bad.” – he says with a German accent as he looks upon your broken leg. “Clearly you need a proper cast on that. Just hold still for a moment. You have quite a few bruises on you, the police beat you up?” Obviously you remain silent. “It’s alright, you can speak freely. The walls don’t have ears, well unless you link them to the Weltnetz. And I am bound by patient-doctor confidentiality, even if the Gestapo and their New American Police lackeys start an interrogation.”

“All done, here grab these.” He hands you a small pill bottle labeled “Blitzregen” after the cast is finished. “After about a week of taking those I can take off the cast. Just take one pill every twelve hours.”

blitzregen.jpg

“But you will need to remain under observation for the night, a very small group of people has a lethal allergy to those. It is kind of hard to detect before you actually swallow one of those pills. Don’t worry, my assistant is working the night shift tonight, he will keep an eye on you and save your life if you go into anaphylactic shock.“

Well at least that takes care of having to find a place to spend the night at. The doctor wakes you up in the morning. “Well it looks like you do not have an allergy. You can leave now.” As you exit the clinic you wonder what to do next, you proceed to walk to the nearest subway station. However you notice that somebody is following you. Two men, they are trying to blend in with the crowd yet they follow you behind every corner, and you started walking in circles. Far too suspicious.

It is clear these men are following you. You will deal with them by…
1)…trying to lose them in a crowded public place. Any sort of confrontation in such a place would no doubt alert the native authorities, this should buy you time.
2)…luring them into a back alley and ambushing them. The element of surprise should allow you to take them out swiftly and silently.
3)…confronting them. Some small talk might “persuade” them to leave you alone.
4)…yelling that suspicious men are following you. Maybe a police officer will hear you.
5)…by entering one of the local establishments and trying to sneak out using a back door or something.
6)…just shooting them. You are not going down quietly.

If you lose the two men you will…
A)…walk to the Governor General’s office and offer him, or one of his assistants, a presentation. After leaving your gun in a safe place outside of the gun-dectector’s range that is.

B)…send the Governor General a holo-teaser in a package. Hopefully the postal service works reliably.
C)…try to earn some “new dollars” in back alleys using the good old “stun and run” theft technique. Minus the running of course, gods damn that titan.
D)…try to contact Emanuel Cortez about that job. Odds are you will be here a while, might as well acquire a dwelling and a source of income so you won’t starve to death before you get a deal.
E)…look for a job elsewhere. Hopefully there is a newspaper, job agency or bulletin board around somewhere.
F)…deploy the filtering unit in a pool of water. Fuel for one more transit might be useful.
G)…transit to a different parallel. Nazis? Not exactly the kind of people you want to deal with.

You can pick two of the actions listed as A) to G) apart from picking both A) and B) since they are mutually exclusive. The rest is not.

Vote now.

Option G) will only succeed if over 50% of people vote for it. The destination will be picked after the next update should that happen. It will prevent Heracles from doing anything else, apart from trying to elude the two suspicious men following you that is.

I apologize for any butchering of the German language that might be present in this update.

Hmm, I'm debating between 2) and 3) to take these guys out. On the one hand, taking them out then using our neural collar to perform mindrape will allow us to really find out who they're working for (are they CPCPT agents or Nazis?) and why we're being followed. On the other hand, we've got a broken leg to worry about and I'm not sure if we'd be physically capable of handling them, even with the adrenaline pumping and the element of surprise.

3) could be as simple as passing a Speech check, but if these guys are determined to haul us in for questioning/capture us, I don't think words are going to cut it. Tough choice.

It's a neural probe (the neural collar is for transporting prisoners and the like), and as mentioned way back just before Heracles left the chimera-infested parallel, it has some sort of biometric authorization preventing a non-titan from using it. So no mind rape, Heracles will have to use conventional means to learn who are they and why they are following him.

1) + B) D)

Chances are, our obvious cluessness about the state of affairs has gotten us some unhealthy attention from the local secret police or whatever - and we're not exactly in top fighting condition with that cast. So evasion should be our first choice (not that we're a fast evader with the blasted cast either). If that fails, we can escalate to "talk softly and carry a charged stun rod".

That incoming rift is also bad news - and if it's related to these two creeps, thing are about to get bad fast. That's why attracting more attention to ourselves is bad - so clueless wandering around and looking for job boards or walking into a government building is out of the question. Contacting Emanuel gives us all the benefits of having a job and a place to crash, with the least possible attention. So I say go for it.

Sending the holo-teaser could also be trouble if an anti-smuggler team is on our tail, but they will detect any attempts to leave the parallel... And the holo-teaser doesn't have to be traceable to us, if we're doing it properly. So, I'd say - go for a sale and see what happens.

EDIT: sorry about the muddled sentences, too tired to write coherently atm.

3) If they're hostile, they won't risk starting shit in public because that would bring the Gestapo down on their heads like a ton of bricks and, at the same time, we may find out something about who's after us. If they're friendly and they're here to get in contact with us, this would save us a lot time and effort.
D) Emmanuel Cortez workes at Zuse Computers, so it would be very useful to get a job there and use our l33t h4x0r skills to gain access to all those materials that are being destroyed and find out what happened on this parallel.
F) We need to prepare a solid exit strategy, given that the CPCPT may be on to us.

All right, brian functioning again & ready for some creative wankery.

There are guys following us. Who are they? Why are they following us? How do they know about us (i.e. who tipped them off)?

1) Maybe our clueless blabbing in the library convinced the librarian to report us to the authorities as a "possible undesirable". She seemed really keen on letting us know the many transgressions that should be reported immediately (possessing pre-2007 press, paper books, etc.). Who's to say her list doesn't include "anybody not displaying a proper level of knowledge and enthusiasm for the laws is to be reported for additional processing"? In that case, the Gestapo is on our tail and they have our physical description from the librarian. The resolution: lose the tail, go underground, get a disguise, be extra careful when making any sale attempts, get the hell out of here when possible.

2) Maybe the doctor is in contact with the underground resistance, and thought we'd be interested in making their acquaintance. Perhaps he got in touch with them while we were sleeping, and they were waiting nearby, started following us, and are looking for a good opportunity to approach us (away from the clinic, so the link to the doctor is not compromised). There could be some potential for selling them goodies, but they're probably not very rich... Sure, I'd nuke the Nazis just for the fun of it, but a good smuggler doesn't waste merchandise on hobby projects. Perhaps they would help us heal and rest just for a small advantage, while discussing bigger ones? Small favors are good, and we could use a hidey hole... But only if it won't get raided by the cops while we're there. So a talk with the guys might turn our ok - but at high risk... Not a fan.

3) Maybe the good Herr Doktor is the one who reported us to the authorities - his "humanitarian" clinic could be just a honeypot meant to attract the undesirables for easier "processing". He doesn't even have to be a bad guy, maybe he really started the clinic to help people, but then the Gestapo figured out the potential of such a place and got him by the balls (the usual: kidnapped family members, creative use of poison with a rare antidote, or just the simple and effective threat of violence) The result for us: same as 1), with the added clause of checking what the hell is in the pills we're taking - calcium and vitamin C are all well and fine, but not really 100% necessary for our bone to heal - and what if there are additional ingredients with interesting side effects? Or are some of our possessions (like say, the cast) bugged? Running our friendly scanner over our equipment and body at the next available opportunity might be wise.

4) We detected a rift not long ago - who's to say our incoming rift wasn't detected by someone? If somebody (CPCPT, Maiximilianites, Titans, whatever) is actively on the look out for riftwalkers - we need to crank our stealth to 11, possibly even postponing any attempts at a sale. Hey, while I'm in the mood, who's to say that Emmanuel Cortez isn't a recon agent sent to intercept us? (unlikely, but still) Smuggling requires just the right mix of stealth and audacity, and it's easy to fuck it up - too much stealth, and Heracles will die old, poor and paranoid in some backwater; too much audacity, and he'll get caught, incarcerated, and sent to a nice agonization holiday... So excuse me if I let even paranoid ideas through :) Leaving this parallel now means whoever just arrived will detect our outgoing rift, and find a way to tail us - bad. If the incoming squad had some means to detect our RGM and track us - worse. I mean, during the 5 years of our absence, the CPCPT might have improved their tech, and our RGM (one of the first personal models, remember) might have become trackable... Perhaps submerging it / separating from it might be wise... Or not, if the antagonists pick it up and leave us stranded in Shitville (with Nazis).

5) Another fun fact - remember that titan we fragged? Remember his sentence: “You have the stench of deuterium-tritium on you, I could smell it from a distance."? If there are any titans or titan influences around, they can probably detect us even when we're not riftwalking. If they are somehow involved with this parallel, we'll stand out to them like a menstruating antelope swimming in a shark-infested seas. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it? :)

I'll skip the crazier conspiracy theories for now...
