First DLC expansion is out Maxie:

Certain people (me) knew that the game's plain worse than the previous one, and quite many of you consumers managed to acertain that in the past months. We're now onto the second phase of my prophecies, eg. shameless cash grab while people are still under hypnosis and will compulsively buy more of this crap. Let me remind you - the developers would rather waste time shitting out several of these DLC modules in the exact same vein as all of their prior activity than actually set out to produce anything more.

It's degrading to watch this.

Started playing the DLC, completed first puzzle, 50% done with second. It's much more difficult than the base game, and lacks the certain charm base had. Still quite enjoyable.

Done with DLC. It requires waaaaay bigger leaps of though than the base game, making it feel more like an old school adventure game (not a good thing). In the base game everything felt connected, and it was easy to move towards the solution little by little. In Sins it feels like you need to jump to conclusions.

tl;dr way weaker than the base game.

I finished it in less than 3 hours, which is reasonable for an episode. I didn't see those leaps tbh.

My brain is not as big as it was when I was younger :D

The biggest issue I have is that a lot of puzzles rely on you remembering the information from the previous ones (the final one is the most glaring example where remembering the sequence of events from base game helps immensely solving the BBEG memory), while pretty much every chapter in the base game was self contained. It's a big departure in terms of mechanics, and probably the source of the leaps I've complained about.

I also did not enjoy the very simplified grammar of "The Raid". I get the artistic reason, but didn't enjoy it much.

That's usually a sign you missed some key piece of evidence and guessed your way into the solution. I definitely did that with the first case where I made an educated guess that the bearded man stole drugs. If you re-examine the evidence you'll probably find what you missed.

Have done first three puzzles, one thing I didn't really get in 3rd puzzle and would appreciate having explained:
The baddies escape to second building, but then somehow they end up back in the garage of the first building. Are you supposed to intuit that the buildings have identical layouts and share a garage?
There's a map you can see, but it's either showing the two floors of building #1, or it's showing the second building has no garage. Either way I don't understand.

Edit: And solved the final puzzle as well. I agree that it feels kind of cheap to have some answers depend on remembering the base game.
I hope the later dlcs are better than this. It's not bad, but feels like a wasted setup.

i mean
the scrambled undercover cop "the bowels of the other twin" so the building is part of the same complex and shares the same parking basement. it's kinda common here if the same property developer build an apartment and shopping centre and the same area, they have different buildings and entrances, but they share the same basement parking. the map is showing #1 and #2 floors of the first building, it's not really relevant.

i also like the final puzzle
remembering the basegame is fun because the story is direct continuation. it was really memorable so it stuck to me.

i agree, the base game is better, and there are some puzzles that are just deliberately confusing:
after the 4th case when you have to summarize the story, they didn't put "czar" as a word, instead they use "Bauer Gang" which is imo, cheap trick to make the sentence harder that it is. at that point i already figured it out, but because of the artificial confusion it took longer than needed

my rankings=

1. The Lemurian Vampire : Peak golden idol IMO, very cool story and add a lot of lore.
2. Spiders of Sri Lanka : just fun, tricky case that is more polished version of the base game.
3. Rise of the Golden Idol : like it more than the prequel, overall just more polished and more varied
4. Case of the Golden Idol : still an amazing gane, 3 and 4 is pretty much interchangeable, but the first golden idol has better plot progression and resolution.
5. Sins of New Wells : not bad at all, but yeah there are some annoying diction and some leaps in logic and conclusion, but at the same time there are still some clever moments. what i like about this is how they play and twist more with the mechanics culumated over the past scenarios.

Feels like the cops really fucked up by not guarding the parking basement if this is a common thing.

the map actually kinda explains this. Lke some players, the cops saw the map, assume the basement isn't connected. The building also look abandoned, so they basically just gloss over the raid strategy. Basically you can chalk it underestimating the gang and incompetence, but cops in real life also act skirting the bare minimum (except for high profile case that earns then PR)

I just finished The Sins of New Wells and I still don't get Maxie's doomposting. I agree that the sequel lost some of the charm of the first one, but it's still an excellent and unique game. I can't wait for the next DLCs.

did maxie get filtered by the first one or what's his beef?
I was under the impression I've already put my thoughts down rather succinctly. I am of the mind that it's lazy and disrespectful for this indie studio with just one game under their belt to announce not one, but several packages of DLCs at the very release, especially given that the formula's exactly the same. It's a question of morality and decorum, I don't expect tactless consumer beasts to share my view.

but the initial DLC for the first game was added after the fact and customers said they enjoyed the DLC so why would they not plan more DLC for their 2nd game that is a sequel to the game that people bought DLC for and said they enjoyed? it's not like the 2nd game has less content than the first or isn't complete. seems a weird thing to be butthurt about

I don't get it.

Rise of the Golden Idol costs 20€. Same price as Return of the Obra Dinn, which feels fair.

For 18€, you get all four DLCs. If we can expect each DLC to be structured like the first one, we're getting an entire new game. For a product of this quality, I don't think 37€ is too much.

I do critisize them as (at least the first DLC) is a direct sequel to the base game's cliffhanger ending, whereas case of golden idol DLC is expanding on the lore while the main story is fully wrapped up, but the base game of rise itself is already a bit longer than case of golden idol and the asking price isn't that much to begin with.

The detective pass itself is less price than 2 tickets to the movies and will give me a dozen more hours of entertainment. These aren't cosmetic DLC or other frivolity, they are real content with new storyline, and while the mechanics stays the same it really dont affect much because the effort is still there.

I honestly can buy a big mac with large fries and cola for the same price and feel i wasted money, but i spent the same on this game, it dont feel wasted because it's good and last longer

If you don't get it, you will not get it. The studio doesn't give a shit about your entertainment, just about milking their jank and fucking off abroad.

God forbid someone who's not a corporation makes okay money. Do you go to the grocery store in the corner and yell at them because their pierogis are 15% more expensive than in Lidl?

Finished the DLC. I liked it quite a bit and found the image-centric mechanics from the last two cases quite refreshing, but I honestly thought they were a bit easy by the game's usual standards.

The first two cases were good; the second one was actually somewhat challenging and reminded me of the more complex puzzles from the first game. That said, once the third case rolled around, the game started experimenting with the new mechanics and it seems they haven't gotten the hang of them yet.

Don't get me wrong, the idea itself is intriguing and the surrealist moments were a delight, but none of them really made me feel like I was being challenged. Case 3 had me stumped for a while not because I didn't know what had happened, but rather due to the fact that the game didn't accept the window as an entry point; you HAD to put in that the gangsters had entered a building, even though the window was how they got in. Case 4 hits you right off the bat with a psychedelic fever dream and trying to explain it was quite fun, but the last puzzle that requires you to unscramble Echo's and Roy's memories was way too simple for my tastes. The only real challenge there was going back to previous cases to refresh my memory on what Echo had been up to during the base game, but "Final Clash" had already taught us that this might be a necessity.

All in all, it was a worthwhile experience; I just hope they get the hang of these new mechanics and do something more satisfying with them in the upcoming DLCs.

Finished Rise + New Wells. It was a year or two ago that I played the first Golden Idol, but I think I enjoyed this one a tad more. I prefer the old system of clicking keywords one by one though, and if it were my game, I would just allow you to save any word without making some of them "special."
