"We decided not to change the ways that players can review games, and instead focused on how potential purchasers can explore the review data. Starting today, each game page now contains a histogram of the positive to negative ratio of reviews over the entire lifetime of the game, and by clicking on any part of the histogram you're able to read a sample of the reviews from that time period. As a potential purchaser, it's easy to spot temporary distortions in the reviews, to investigate why that distortion occurred, and decide for yourself whether it's something you care about. This approach has the advantage of never preventing anyone from submitting a review, but does require slightly more effort on the part of potential purchasers.

It also has the benefit of allowing you to see how a game's reviews have evolved over time, which is great for games that are operating as services. One subtlety that's not obvious at first is that most games slowly trend downwards over time, even if they haven't changed in any way. We think this makes sense when you realize that, generally speaking, earlier purchasers of a game are more likely to enjoy it than later purchasers. In the pool of players who are interested in a game, the ones who are more confident that they'll like the game will buy it first, so as time goes on the potential purchasers left are less and less certain that they'll like the game. So if you see a game's reviews trending up over time, it may be an even more powerful statement about the quality of work its developers are doing."

o_O How is it that people are still paying for Stellaris?

Also, the game sells for a bit over €12 now, and the "Utopia" DLC was one of the two DLCs you could get for free in Europe if you bought anything during that price hike episode. The latter was basically handing out freebies for their players in the Europe 1 zone who had no price changes during that time anyway, which was a good marketing move.

Looks like Valve was working on a four-player fantasy adventure game
Eye-catching Drew Wolf art suggests so.

Was Valve once developing ideas for a four-player, co-operative fantasy adventure game? Artwork by former employee Drew Wolf suggests so.

Wolf's "Untitled Fantasy Game" gallery on his website shows character work for an internal R&D project, "a fantasy adventure game centered around cooperative combat and driven by story".

"The goal was to present as many groups of four adventures as possible in order to establish a diverse cast of archetypal characters. After discussion and feedback the group was paired down to ten characters. They would become the project's main characters."

The characters range from knight to demon to wraith to hunter. They're a diverse bunch.

Nowhere does it explicitly say this internal project was Valve's but Drew Wolf isn't known to have worked anywhere else in recent years. He worked at Valve, past tense, for nine years, but is now independent according to his website bio, though his LinkedIn profile lists him as at Valve still.

While at Valve, Wolf "developed a visual style for characters in Dota 2", which is where you probably know his art from.

There have been a few high profile departures from Valve of late. In May, one of the studio's most recognisable faces, Chet Faliszek, who was instrumental in shaping Portal and pushing virtual reality, left Valve. A few months earlier, Portal, Left 4 Dead and Half-Life 2 episodes writer Erik Wolpaw left Valve. His writing partner Mark Laidlaw had left Valve early in 2016, and in August 2017 would go on to reveal what was probably the plot for Half-Life 2: Epiosde 3.

Former Valve artist’s portfolio includes mystery co-op fantasy game, rad female TF2 characters

drew-wolf-fantasy-game.jpg

Valve Software might possibly be making a cooperative fantasy game, or have at one time worked on, or thought about making, or doodled some ideas for one. This revelation comes from concept art in the portfolio of former Valve artist Drew Wolf. “The project was a fantasy adventure game centered around cooperative combat and driven by story,” he says, though he doesn’t explicitly say the character sketches were for Valve, simply referring it as an “internal R&D project”. So maybe it maybe it never got beyond the R&D stage, maybe it wasn’t even for Valve, or maybe it’ll be Valve’s next game.

The point is: oh hot damn, Wolf also drew some ace concepts for female Team Fortress 2 characters, come look at these.

Let’s go.

With the cigars, yes.

drew-wolf-tf2-2.jpg

Do check out the rest in Wolf’s ArtStation portfolio. He said these were from “An internal pitch project aimed to bring female characters to the cast of Team Fortress 2.”

tf2_6.jpg

Oh, that fantasy game? Over the weekend, Eurogamer pointed out character designs in Wolf’s portfolio. Wolf explained his role in it:

“Development of these characters started with a round of loose sketches. The goal was to present as many groups of four adventures as possible in order to establish a diverse cast of archetypal characters. After discussion and feedback the group was paired down to ten characters. They would become the projects main characters.”

rndheroes09.jpg

Once the characters were settled, he drew ‘mood sketches’ to give a sense of characters and the world, which “helped convey the direction quickly and facilitate creative discussion for each character.”

rndheroes02.jpg

His portfolio also has creature concept art from the same R&D project.

Was it even for Valve? Dunno. And if so, did it ever get past the R&D stage? Dunno.

Though Valve aren’t releasing much these days, they do seem to still be poking at things. Valve’s last full game was Dota 2, which launched in 2013. The only new game we know for certain they’re working on is Artifact, a Dota spin-off card game. Concept art for a space game out Valve was floating around years ago, though we’ve not seen or heard much from that in a while. My fingers are crossed that they’ve switched to an Inner Space game bearing the tagline “Now you’re thinking with sphincters.”

It feels like the main way we hear about Valve’s plans these days is through leaks.

Actually, looks like they're mostly, if not all, "games" by an entity called Zonitron and its dummy companies. Most, again if not all, of them are asset flips, and it supposedly profited from bundles and card trading fee.

Wonder if it crossed the line more than just releasing a lot of craps (like copyright violation or scam etc.) or Valve finally realized there should be the minimum standard.

Well they implemented (or are going to) change to card drops so only games that generate legitimate sales start dropping cards. Now they're removing games that benefitted from the previous lack of rules.

Turns out that Half-Life’s AI had a sense of smell

The original Half-Life’s AI seems pretty quaint nearly 20 years later, but it was a revolution at the time. Even now, people are still digging up new details on how it all works. Now we even know that smell plays a role in the game.

This revelation comes via YouTuber MarphitimusBlackimus, who has broken down the how and what of the smell system. The types of scent are named in code are meat, carcass, and garbage, but the latter seems to have gone unused. Guards will comment on various odors left by corpses. It seems scientists were intended to make similar comments, but this feature is broken in the final game, so we’ll just have to assume the lab work has ruined their olfactory capabilities.

Creatures can also follow scents, notably including bullsquids, which will follow smells to a source of food even if the food is out of sight. If they’re injured, they’ll ignore food for a time, and they’re even smart enough to stop eating after a meal, investigating food but not eating it when they’re full. (That’s something I still struggle with.)

There’s nothing truly hidden about this, but it’s such a fun little detail to have gone largely unnoticed for nearly 20 years. If you’re looking for a reason to dig back into the original Half-Life, a former Valve designer has just put out a major new mod that looks to be a great reason to dive back in.

So called "game collectors" are butthurt about this. Since this purge, unlike previous removals, somehow affecting their library count and other vanity activities: https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/72foef/changes_in_steam_api_50_removed_games_no_longer/

I saw a thread here 2 months ago when I lost around 100 games due to steam removing them from the store/api. Today, it looks like they did another wave. I lost 102 games today. I am unsure what games/developers these are. Any info from Steam/Valve?

Personally I would be happier if Steam told us the names of the games affected and the developers. Instead, I randomly notice I lost 50 games. What a nice surprise from Valve! I am sure a lot of other users are upset with this.

I think I will stop supporting Steam and check out other gaming Platforms now.

Are there... are there really people out there... that are SO BLOODY FUCKING STUPID and yet... have ENDLESS POCKETS OF CASH that they'll try to "collect" every game on Steam?

Game collectors are pretty common in steam these days, a pretty significant portion of traders are collectors for example.

A lot of bundle sites also cater almost exclusively to that crowd nowdays. Humble still has good quality games but everybody else like groupees and gala put out all sorts of shovelware collections that only people concerned about their gamecount buy. There are even sites that sell 400 games for 10$ packs etc.

ENDLESS POCKETS OF CASH

Nope. You just leave the games on idle to wait until the cards drop, sell the cards, and buy another game. You never have to spend money on this, at all. After all, these games are like 1 to 5 bucks each and they often are like 90% discounted too.

It's sort of a competition for them, just like with steam levels. They spend tens of thousands on this with no apparent reason, aside from mental illness.

It's not like Vavle buys the cards back from you. Someone out there must have pockets of cash to inject into the system. Perhaps even more mystifying than buying shitty shovelware is buying card drops from shitty shovelware

The Steam meta is pretty fucked up these days.

There are collectors who buy hundreds of shovelware every month to boost their game count, and plague the trading community snatching games they will never play.

There are those who hoard giveaway keys from promotions with bots and then give them to the "idlers", people who activate your keys and send you back the cards to sell.

There are level-up bot services who send you full card sets to craft in exchange for money, so that you can raise your rank easily.

"Games" are made specifically to be farmed for cards, or sold on shovelware bundles, or have 2500 achievements that unlock with a press of a button just to raise achievement hunters' score.

I guess valve struck gold with turning steam from a client into a social network marketplace
