What the heck?

The Witcher, Morrowind/Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mass Effect = Action RPG

Diablo, Sacred, Torchlight, Titan Quest = "hack 'n' slash" RPG

Gees.

Oh, and RPG has never been about no story-telling. RPG is about character development. Movies are about story-telling. And books. And comics.

So read again, fail-face (witcher dude).

p.s. I never really wanted to sound that offensive, but when I am at THIS forum... well I just can't seem to restrain myself ;)
Fuck. Some Bulgarian dude with 5 posts knows more about RPGs than most morons in this thread and CDproject together...

I demand that RPGCodex starts covering Street Fighter games. I really liked the story of Street Fighter II (that Guile dude looking for his missing bro Charlie is some seriously emotionally engaging stuff), which, IMO, is enough for the game to be considered an RPG. Not an "action RPG" (those have shitty stories), mind you, but a real RPG.
Remember when Blanka finally found his mother? That was so touching. Really emotionally engaging. If he could have date-simmed her afterwards StreetFighter 2 would have reached Biowarian proportions of storytelling.

I thought we already separated Diablo and it's offspring from the rest of the ARPGs. Hack and Slash, faggots.

The CDProjekt guy wasn't explaining his point to the enlightened denizens of the fair Codexia, but to a simple journalist. In today's rethoric only two RPG subgenres exist - jRPGs and ARPGs, with the latter consisting of generally every non-japanese RPG. Just read some recent mainstream reviews, press releases and shit like that. Faggot.

And if it's still too complicated for some “slower” people - an example from the Torchlight official FAQ:
Q: What is Torchlight?

A: Torchlight is an action role-playing-game for the PC made by the creators of Diablo, Fate, and the never-released Mythos among other games. Set in the mining town of Torchlight, players will adventure to uncover the mysteries of the Ember mines. It offers a fully featured character leveling system, randomized dungeons, hordes of monsters, and gobs of great loot.
