Yeah, Skyrim is, but that's nothing new. Big dead world with lots of dead people and dead things to do, but they've always been that way, that's the Bethesda trademark and has been way back to Morrowind which was the beginning of the decline (non codex context, means the same but I'm not saying it just to be a 'bro') in comparison to their earlier ES, even Fallout 3 had the exact same dead feeling about it and so did F:NV it's just that that gets a pass because of better writing, questing and because 'Obsidian', ultimately they were still big dead worlds. The Witcher series has never had that problem, 'dead' is certainly not a word I would feel justified in using in those cases, so just because it has an open world it's stupid to paint it with the same brush as Bethesda's offerings.

As for "reactive world, complex plot, excellent systems", that's a given too I doubt anyone would argue there except perhaps the Bio and Betsy fans (not particularly a dig but I am calling into question their tastes for an RPG videogame) given that that's exactly what they don't get and seem to love it anyway. All of that in a single building, fair enough, if it's done properly but pointing out something that will never be done is hardly a point against what I was saying, considering open worlds are what do get made these days.

So the fact that there is a fundamental difference in the way CDP and Beth go about designing their content, it's dumb to refer to W3 as a Beth clone, jesus, it's just as dumb to refer to a Bio open world as a Beth clone, they are just as shitty, but in their own 'special' way.

Not unless its filled with mindless bethesda style quest design - and I'm concerned that it will given the obvious influence drawn from skyrim. I'd obviously love a big world full of interesting content.

I thought the discussion was specifically about 3D?

No-one is ripping Garriott off, which is probably the whole point. 2D worlds don't really equate to the same thing these days, it's not even the same context. You got actual gameplay then because they couldn't rely on the graphics. How ever with Bethesda that all changed due to the fact that eye candy became the substitute for game play which is why Bethesda clone became a derogatory term, but you know all this, so I'm not sure why you posted it, it doesn't seem to be what the general point was about.

2D or 3D doesn't matter. Garriott made the first *modern* open world game first.

And it is *still* better than anything Bethesda had done.

You have some odd preconceptions. Bethesda games aren't known for having particularly great graphics. Their character models in particular have been mocked for their low quality.

You know what series of games IS known for its extreme graphics whoring, though? That's right - The Witcher.

Agreed hands down, only an idiot would attempt to argue with that.

It's a bit tenuous given the fundimental differences, there's a reason no one says 'Garriott rip off' because he wasn't making big wide open spaces full of shit. So yeah, he did make one 'first'.. but it wasn't really 'first' because his games aren't equatable to the big dead worlds we get now.. so realistically it really was Beth who 'did it first'

But ok, if you want to put them in the same boat, then fair enough.

At least Witcher can back up with content, story and a sense of interest, so the graphics serve the game, they aren't all of it.... and you're wrong about Beth, maybe now, as it's become like an institution and they get a free pass for everything, but when they first started with Morrowind, you bet your ass people were going "WOW" (edit.. actually no, I'm not going to quantify that statement.. they're pretty much known across the board for pretty at their time, there might be the odd few or group who say it could be better (then coincidently point to something no quite as good) but generally they set the bar with their games) and that hid a lot that was lacking from other games.

    Edited.

Bollocks. TW1 was mediacore in therm of GFX, TW2 did have fantastic textures and great art direction and TW3 seems to continue on that. What changed though is budget as potatoes earned moneys on TW.

It's strange how I actually was completely motivated to finish the Witcher 1 recently, despite hating every act but the last one, in that playthrough, and for the witcher 2 It's just meh across the board and I quite near the end of act 1. Both of their combat systems suck but at least the Witcher 1's system is more functional. I also liked the choices and consequences of W1 more, and the elves in that game are bros in stark contrast to the dicks of W2.

No, simply the truth. Ultima VII is just as big and devoid of interesting content as your average Bethesda game. And the combat mechanics are about equally bad (shoot the AI from the top of that rock over there vs where the fuck is the enemy and why is Dupre running in the wrong direction again?!!!)

On a technical level, but in overall presentation it was still better than Skyrimjob 4 years later (except for that skybox).

TW1 greatness was in design. Not in GFX. Places in this game were created with logical design in mind where in case of Skyrim it was just potatoland.

They also had awesome texture artist working dem small details:

Wat. Comparing Twitcher 1 to Skyrim? Lol. Wasn't the argument about Twitcher 2? Since, you know, first Twitcher used NWN's Aurora engine, for crying out loud.

I meant about me not playing it.

But I will clarify my statement just so the nitpicking stops.

"there's a reason no one says 'Garriott rip off' because he wasn't making big dead wide open spaces .

We were talking about gameplay, and Ultima has it.

People forget that that game was constructed from The NWN engine, sellotape and putty, and for a budget most devs couldn't even turn the lights on for.

    Awesome achievement.

About the "who started what" i assume that when you talk about Beth, you are talking about Daggerfall, which has the biggest Beth Gameworld so far...

And the whores also have graphics.

Graphics were very important in the success of Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. MW was by far the best-looking 3D RPG of 2002 whereas the potato faces didn't stop people from praising Oblivion for its large, lush and utterly boring next-gen landscapes. Skyrim wasn't similarly groundbreaking, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a mainstream review of it that didn't ejaculate over at least some aspect of the game's visuals.

Anyway, you're confusing good visuals with graphics whoring when they are actually two different things.
