Man, what is seriously cooler than these over the top alpha male killers? This is why I love Geralt (and Riddick).

And Duke Nukem, and like, probably a dozen others.

Seriously, when did this 'alpha male' thingy start being such a negative concept?

It's boring, cliche', and shallow. But hey, too each their own.

It's also puerile wish-fulfillment fantasy best suited to the mind of a thirteen-year-old boy who's never seen a tit in his entire worthless life (and the Codex loves puerile wish-fulfillment fantasies, right? I mean, those are the bread and butter of Bioware).

Mind you, Geralt isn't too obnoxious a specimen of this type. Mostly because a lot of times what he does... fails to help anyone or improve the situation. Stay neutral? Things go kaput. Help one side? Things still go kaput and now you've an added guilty conscience. The hot sorceress who wants him? Also uses him to further her political ambition. The villain he killed? Oops, just did away with humanity's few chances to be saved.

Not being perfect/not getting to save the world and everything/basically failing at heroism = great for irony and giving depth to an otherwise typical badass alpha-male superman.

Pffft, what happened to the good old concept of letting people figuring things out on their own?

This isn't entirely true. I simply love those types of characters. Arnold in Predator, Geralt in Witcher, Riddick in Pitch Black. It's not just about wanting to be them, but also about just having a genuinely fun time watching these over-the-top alpha males beating the shit out of everything and delivering corny one liners.

Geralt is quite a tragic character. Despite his superhuman fighting skills his efforts are largely futile, because the world simply doesn't work as it does in fairy tales. He effectively continuously pisses against the wind, because even though he knows of it's futility, he just has to act sometimes.

I also enjoy the universe - it's basically your generic fantasy (at least on the basic level), except with all the mushy parts cut out and healthy dose of reality and cynicism thrown in instead, which makes the shit go down in flames.

The villain he killed? Oops, just did away with humanity's few chances to be saved.
Not necessarily. Even if so, the price might have been too high or Geralt might have not cared - I wouldn't.
However it must have been like a punch to the groin to learn that
"the hitler you despised and killed was actually your foster son and product of your efforts at parenting all along - way to fail daddy"
.
