I don't think it looks that bad. HUD icons can reportedly be turned off, we've known that forever. Atmosphere and character movement look pretty good. Really my two big concerns are level design, AI, story, that sort of thing -

Well, thank fuck those are your only concerns with a Thief game.

Haha, they are big concerns. I'm just saying the way it looks and feels seems to be quite solid. Seeing a video like that without someone babbling over it or trying to show off all the features makes it look a lot more like classic Thief to me - but the look and feel are also not the most of my concerns.

Gamebanshee best RPG 2014 contender?
They took out the XP system... but why should we let that stop us? :troll:

I still can't believe Ashpolt became one of them. Fuck.

I believe it was simply a matter of money. I don't know if you remember but Ashpolt stated many times that he worked in video games marketing and PR. And he was very vocal about Coyotegreys poor maketing choices on DXHR to the point that he was banned by Viktoria (Myimmortal at the time) under his orders. But Ashpolt was bailed out by Jerion within a week or so.

As soon as I and a few others on the official forums saw the E3 special treatment of the mods and oddly Ashpolt, and read his posts from E3 that rang of an almost PR shill tone, we all knew something was wrong at that point. He still claimed afterwards that he was impartial in the whole thing and would be vocal on the game did wrong. But in the end he was vocal on nothing he knew EM was going to change anyway. With all his posts saying how much it felt like Thief and how EM had nailed the core gameplay. He even pulled the timeless "I have played it, you have not" on Shralla (now the last vocal voice of reason) when he called him out on the fact that he cannot be impartial after posting pictures of himself having fun drinking beer with his EM dev friends at E3.

Looking back now it becomes clear that he may have been working for them in some way during the build up to the release of the shitty Tomb Raider 2013 game. His defence for that mediocre crap was jarring since he hated Hitman absolution which had all the same issues.

Ashpolt was invited to a media-only event to test the games. He got VIP treatment (hotel rooms etc) and got to meet the devs and drink with them. How is that impartial? How could he, after all that, come back and tell the forums that the game is shit?

Same old shit. We filled the game with all kinds of retard-friendly features but you can turn them off, we promise! Nevermind that the retard-friendly mentality has infused every aspect of the game. Guess I'll just have to turn off the game itself, then.

Well, the constant critique from fans seems to have improved the game a little bit over the last months.
The visual design isn't complete garbage (but I still think it's too much Dishonored, not enough Thief).
The next-gen AAA shit still bothers me, because even if you can turn it off, there's the danger that it will still bleed through/make gameplay poorer because levels/objectives are designed with them in mind.
If there's one thing I am still (and will stay) butthurt about, it's the butchering of the setting and the characters.
I just can't get over that. Nothing would have stopped them from creating a new character (hell, it would have made a lot more sense after TDS to start with a fresh character then to reactivate Garret), probalby set several years/decades before or after the originals. A lot of potential conflict with the original trilogy and their fans could have been avoided. But no, they had to go for a non-sensical "reboot".

Of course they'd go for a reboot. Casual kids wouldnt buy a game named Thief 4 since they're not used to the franchise - they'd rather buy something they're familiar with or the first of a franchise so that they can follow up the story. Therefore, Tomb Raider reboot, Thief reboot, etc etc...

Hey, a reboot is not necessarily a problem - as you say, the kids wouldn't know Thief 1-3 anyway, so no use in bringing a Thief 4 for them. But WHY DO THEY NEED TO BUTCHER THE SETTING? Why keep Garrett and risk the old fans, which still are one of your target groups? Why not come up with some new char? NuGarrett anyway has basically nothing in common with the old one save the name and the profession. This is what I don't get.

Because the don't care. Eidos does not, and never did care for the old fans. As shown by their entire disregard for established settings, lore and gameplay. In their minds established fans of a series are guaranteed sales who are next to unpleasable. They only ever valued older fans as long as they helped the game sell enough to warrent a sequel. And thats it.

Ashpolt was invited to a media-only event to test the games. He got VIP treatment (hotel rooms etc) and got to meet the devs and drink with them. How is that impartial? How could he, after all that, come back and tell the forums that the game is shit?

Exactly. They knew we trusted him as he had been seen as something of being the voice of reason on the official forums during the build up to DXHR's release. But even if he doesn't work for them in some fashion. Even if he wasn't bought and paid for. And even if they didn't do any of that. How could he and anyone ever claim to be impartial after he and his friends are treated in such a unique and special way ?

And that was the whole point of the Thiaf E3 forum campaign. To buy the loyalty of the most vocal and trusted forum members and everyone else by means of association.

Atmosphere is OK, but character movement is not to my liking with the swooping, limiting of jumping and climbing. Leaning also looks like it works like a cover mechanic. You push a button to hug a wall, and then press left or right to lean.

MGS is a third person game, and not even a pure stealth game. Stupid comparison.
