It's smart of them to release the game this month. February is usually the month of gaming drought so they're capitalizing on that fact. Smart fuckers.

I think February is more becoming the dumping ground for bad titles. Aliens: Colonial Marines was released last February, you know.

I never pirate newer games but I am going to pirate this just to see the destruction.

It's like the 9/11 of video games at this point. Surely it can't live up to the infamy.

Pretty much this. The game will be an average Dishonored clone at the very best.

I don't understand how a game without jumping can in any way be like Dishonored (AKA "Vertical Environment Exploration: The Game")

I'm not. Even pirating the title will be giving it unwarranted attention it does not deserve.

Let it sink. Let it go. There will be plenty of Let's Plays and reviews from shills that will be forced/paid to play the game anyway.

You are right about this although the game will still have some verticality like climbing very high ledges using that hook, rope arrows and drop down knockout. The primary jab at it being like Dishonored is the changing of Garrett from thief to fighter thief with magical powers (which Corvo is). And all the modern stuff like DLC, bright shadows, etc.

The most recent preview definitely seems to indicate attention to vertical exploration, though I agree that restricting jumping to preset locations is an especially odd and misguided choice in that context.

For me, what pushes the game from simply looking similar to Dishonored - which would only be natural, given how the latter drew inspiration from the original Thief series - to coming across as a full-fledged knockoff is primarily the setting and to a lesser extent the specific form that Garrett's powers take. As Borelli mentioned, playing a fighter/thief with magical powers matches up, but that could also describe most any recent action-RPG made with the goal of making stealth a viable alternative to combat, such as DE:HR or AP. (Even if the powers they give you aren't explicitly labeled as magic, they pretty much come down to the same thing.) And DLC and cinematic takedowns and such are a given in any AAA game.

But then you've got the setting: a crumbling city beset by plague and on the brink of chaos, where the leader is a ruthless man who rules with an iron fist and the protagonist tops the most wanted list. Sound familiar? There was also that character in one of the earlier previews that people were comparing to Granny Rags. And then there's focus mode, essentially a combination of the Void Gaze and Bend Time powers, and swooping, which looks like it'll function as a non-vertical, short-ranged Blink. Taken altogether, it's hard not to get the impression that the game is, at the very least, attempting to ride Dishonored's coattails.

Edit: That earlier preview.

"War. War never changes." "Swooping. Swooping is bad." "Robes. Robes are always a bad sign."

...

"I'm not a kid anymore," she said in the angstiest voice possible. "Here, take my eyeliner," he replied. He knew what it was like for nobody to understand.

...

"GARRET I'M FLIPPING" "ME TOO ERIN, IT'S BEEN LIKE THIS EVER SINCE THEY TURNED ME INTO A FUCKING NINJA"

...

Is the "protege" girl supposed to be the kid from the ending of Thief 3? Because you just know she is going to be the romance option. And that would mean Garrett has been fucking the kid from the ending of Thief 3. Eww.

Between a let's play of this shit and actually playing it (trying it, actually), I think the best way to go is play it. I bet a lot of "let's plays" will be praising the game, and I think I couldn't stand that...

That part where he causes the fire vent to set the guard on fire...why did the guard stop exactly in front of that vent, allowing Garett plenty of time to murder him with fire to the face?

Ridiculously gamey. Logically that is the last place anyone would stop because the steam coming out would be a distraction and uncomfortable.

No no no no. There shouldn't be any connections between the original trilogy and this blasphemy. This is a reboot, nobody should connect the two.

Because nothing is stealthier than setting someone on fucking fire.

At least now they're using the source material and adding supernatural/Mechanist stuff.
