What would have been rape is if they pretended it was an actual sequel and made a shitty game.

This reboot is easily ignorable if bad, and (however unlikely that is) a fresh new start if good.

A sequel would preferably use a different character (after TDS it would make sense to retire Garret as the main character) and could easily change the existing factions and characters somewhat, or introduce new ones.
It would be much more respectful to the setting and established story than throwing everything from the first 3 games over board as if they never happened.

The only "respectful" thing they can do is make a good game. Seeing as that's not very likely, I'm quite glad that Eidos Montreal won't be touching LGS's canon.

If it's good, it's like the Dark Knight trilogy. If it's bad, it's like <insert shitty Hollywood reboot here> and everybody forgets about it after two months.

In any case, it's a good thing. Let the game stand on its own strengths, without relying and/or shitting on the classics.

I doubt the reception would have been much different had they done a reboot that removed the concept of the Jedi, made Luke a cool action hero (and Leia an action gurrrl) and turned Darth Vader into an evil galactic slaver warlord who abducted Lukes Uncle who Luke now tries to set free. Even if it had been a good movie.
Because it would go totally against the established lore.

I'm not so sure it's really the same principle. Thief isn't very well known and so, if it's bad, people will just forget it about it regardless of whether it's a reboot or a direct sequel. The Star Wars movies, on the other hand, are very well known, and so an entry in the franchise couldn't be written off so easily even if it were a reboot.

I'd like to know what the team (the leads, if we know them) working on Thiaf has developed in the past. Infinitron knows, perhaps? I think this is not the same team as the one developed DE:HR.

This is hard to determine, as two entire teams have quit while working on it and we don't know how much of their influence is left. The Game Director worked on Ass Creed and helped design Altair, however.
